Funny that the ad was taken out in a Bell-owned newspaper, to add insult to injury...

During the Expresssvu PVR software issues, I investigated a switch to Rogers down here in NB, and the service isn't quite on par with what is available in Ontario.

Here, they do not offer a standard def PVR. The programming is more expensive than what I'm paying with Bell.

I also concluded that,

-I'd rather wait for the 25-hour 942 than deal with a faulty 921, or put up with an 8 hour HD PVR.
-I'd miss all the timezones I get on Bell. Rogers, at least here, does not have all Canadian time zones.
-I don't seem to be missing much on CBC HD, and Bell will add it eventually. This situation would be different if the NHL was playing.
-I don't need VOD as I own a PVR. It would be nice, and will be nice when we all have IPTV.

There is NO excuse for Bell not carrying Foxnews. Also, their customer support is terrible, and the faulty PVR Software issue was inexusable. Despite this, it made more sense to stick it out than to invest in two Rogers HD PVRs to replace what I currently have.

Bell has poor customer service but will make up for it in credits,I prefer them over Rogers. In my case the picture is that much better.

Being an Ex- BEV customer these are the things i dislike about satellite
- equipment is needed for every tv
- I would need to get a sw44 switch at $100
- poor customer support
- you have to pay to send a technician to your house to fix problems
- you have to pay for extra feeds into the house
- poor signal when wheather is bad

now with cable,
- I can have 5 feeds into my house at no extra charge
- I can split lines without buying equipment
- No Equipment necessary for every tv
- technician comes to your house for no charge when problems arises
- excellent customer support
- works when wheather is bad

I switched from SC to Rogers in Dec 2004, with no regrets.

Some of the things I like:
- Rogers (Ontario) coverage of OHL hockey. Dozens of regular-season and playoff games that you simply can't get on satellite.
- Local FM radio stations over cable (plus I get the digital music stations too when I feel like it)
- awesome two-tuner HD PVR (with very few bugs, all of which are minor), including "archive to VCR" function which basically lets me route a recorded show to another TV in the house, while I watch anything else I want on my main TV. (note this function requires extra wiring between TVs)
- analog cable gives new life for TVs that I never used while I had satellite

The only thing I liked better about *C was the picture quality, but with so many HD channels on Rogers, I basically watch HD channels about 90% of the time, so the quality of the SD channels doesn't matter much.

To bad i am in Winnipeg.. where it's Shaw Cable.. hehe - or i could have Voted also...

One thing i ll tell you - Rogers is surely better then Shaw.. or Express Vu or SC for that matter also.. - if with Nothing else, then with WAY WIDER selection of offered ethnic channels..

They got like 3 or 4 Russian (or Russian Spoken ethnic channels .. if counting Ukrainian one.. that is 50/50 a russian language content) .. where Shaw, BEV, or SC.. - all "have Jack" :(

They do not even offer one :(

And then people wonder why there is a Grey Market or h*cking (or trying to.. ) DISH Network.. that offer those Russian ones also.. and many other ethnic ones...

Gotto live in Ontario, etc.. to be able to subscribe those (from Rogers only).. - Rediculous :(

Hi,

As a condo dweller with a low north east exposure I sort of felt like a bit of a Rogers captive.

That all changed when Bell introduced digital tv through the phone lines for Condos and apts. They offerred 3 mnths free trial. I told them I have a HDTV with a Rogers decoder/pvr in my media room and a standard 4/3 table top connected directly to the second cable input in another room. I told them if theywanted to install the digital box on the 4/3 tv without disturbing my HD setup go ahead.

First B didn't come on the day hey were supposed to so I got an extra month. Next they told Rogers to disconnect me, "which they did".
When I went Ballistic with Rogers tthey just kept piling on free stuff and discounts and re connected me within 10 minutes.

Anyway B still dooesn't have HD so they get there box back when thw freebee is over but I'm deleriously happy that theres now competition for my business.

Last week I even switched my landline telephone tp Rogers for a better price.

B.

I live in St. John's Newfouldland so my options are either Rogers Digital Cable or Bell ExpressVu. Does anyone know why either is better than the other and why? I'm just looking for some opinions. Thanks in advance for your help.

That depends on the cable infrastructure in your neighbourhood. If it is old and your house is wired with RG-59, Expressvu will probably provide better picture quality overall.

If you are in a newer or upgraded subdivision, and have RG-6 home runs, you should find Rogers PQ better.

That is my experience.

For pricing, the $45 package from both providers contains roughly the same channels.

Keep in mind Rogers will give you a free HD or SD PVR rental for two years with their Realchoice offer. You have to give them an old satellite receiver though.

My cable company changed cabling to optical in my district a few years ago. When I ordered modem cable and LAN Internet service, they changed the cable from the telephone pole to the house. At the time, they did not change or suggest a change in cabling in the house and that cable has been there for close to 20 years. There are no markings on the cable but I suspect the cable to be RG59 because the diameter is slightly more than RG58 which I use in my business.

That being said, if the cable service uses optical cabling to provide Internet and TV service in your district, than the picture quality of cable will be on a par with satellite. I had satellite before coming back to cable and the PQ for HD is the same (provided you have a quality Component cable). For SD, my service is 100% digital.

Since Rogers in Newfoundland buys their feeds from Cancom; SC would be the way to go for best picture quality

Have you got a hate against Star Choice or what.

Of course, it's relevant. Rogers in NFLD get's far more feeds from SC/Cancom than you mention.

I'll give you the relevance:

What will give better PQ?

A) Homeowner receives Digicipher II feed directly to his home and decodes at his settop box.

or:
B) Cable head receives same DCII signal, then converts signal to analog and runs thru miles of cables and a multitude of amps and splitters.

or:
C) Cable head receives same DCII signal, decodes signal and then recompresses in another digital format for transmission to customer

His question is should I get Rogers Cable or Bell Expressvu.

I think it's obvious from his opening statement that he thought that Rogers and Expressvu were his only choices. And then in his reply asks what "SC stands for".
