: Manufacture Dates- Noisy HLP Series
nosepa:
If you can get them to replace the whole set, then go for it. Bottom line is that it should definitely not make the high pitched noise. This is stated clearly in Samsung's DLP FAQ. Don't live with it.
BruceFan:
Way to go on pointing out the jumper setting. This just proves WpgDan's point that the technicians aren't necessarily trained, or do any homework before they fix your set.
nosepa 2005-02-16, 12:19 PM I called Samsung today and open up a new case. The guy was very surprised that I didn’t sound angry or upset, about the many times the service guy been over my house. He want to send a different service company over to fix my TV, but just to keep it consistent he is going to send the some company that been to my house 3 times already (CVE electronics). He said if I’m not completely satisfied this time around to call back so they can replace the TV. This time around they are going to replace the color wheel/engine the buzzing sound on the left side of the TV that I hear even when the TV is completely off, and the water marks with a new screen.

WpgDan 2005-02-16, 09:25 PM So I finally Got the same pn you got replaced as well, and so far Can tell it makes alot less noise, so that’s good, but got a question did your service guy change anything in the service menu ? Like cw1 or cw2 since my Repair guy was so rude and had a attitude we was no help to me.
Thanks Dan
Bruce Fan 2005-02-17, 09:24 AM Hey Dan,
That's great! Nope, he didn't change anything in the service menu. I asked about that and it didn't seem like he knew what I was talking about. All he had to do, at my prompting, was remove the jumper to tell the set it was an air bearing colour wheel. Until he did that the colours were all out of whack.
NPM108 2005-02-28, 05:38 AM Wow guys, you are all my saviours!
Just got an SP46L3HX (European Model Naming) for the 46' DLP and have that colour wheel noise. My set has been on order from the local and only Samsung Agent for the past 5 weeks and came from Samsung Italy.
After reading this post I will check where and when it was made, if you can give me some pointers where this info is that would be great.
I am guessing it will be an late 04 model and probably from Mexico as well. As the TV is only 2 days old I don't want anything replaced I am going to give the TV back.
But I am very surprised and at the same time disappointed that Samsung have let this slip through their quality control and profilerate all over the world. What is going on with them?!
NPM108,
This is by no means scientific, but from the information we have collected here, it seems like October 2004 and earlier Tijuana TVs are the problem.
I can't speak for your region, as this information is based on posts from members in the Toronto area. On the other hand, some posts came from Manitoba and New Jersey, so the problem may be wide spread.
Keep us posted on how you resolve the issue.

NPM108 2005-02-28, 03:27 PM Hi all,
So just to update you my TV details are as follows:
Made in Europe - Hungary
My colour wheel states FDB Colour Wheel: P/N BP67-00099A
Model Number: SP46L3HXX/XEC
S/N 43083HDXB00020N
Type No: AT46L3
Unfortunately there is no date of manufacture stated anywhere on the rear labels. It is interesting that the TV has a Fluid Dynamic Bearing Colour wheel as opposed to the Air Bearing Wheel which could resolve the issue.
Ultimately I would want a brand new factory assembled set with this colour wheel than risk having it changed here locally!
Looks like your problem is indeed the FDB Colour Wheel.
My brother-in-law had a noisy FDB colour wheel replaced with an Air bearing colour wheel and the noise problem was solved. Same goes for people that have posted to this thread like WpgDan and BruceFan.
It seems like the factory in Mexico is now using air bearings in it's newly built TVs. I suggest you find out whether the factory in Hungary has made the same change. Otherwise, even if you do get another set, how can you gaurantee that it has a good colour wheel?
That is interesting that there is no manufacture date. What does your dealer say about this issue?
NPM108 2005-03-01, 02:16 AM I'll try to stop laughing.....ref my dealer!!
He didn't even know about the 46 DLP until we told him it existed, he did have the Captain Kirk but he thought that the 46L5HX which is the LCD Rear Pro was the newer version!! Now that he knows about DLP on the 46 he is getting those, but I'm afraid Malta isn't much of a consumer market, its more of a: This is what we have, tough!
His best advice was that I email Samsung and see what can be done, but personally I feel this is an issue for him to sort out with his contacts and not me the end user.
My only concern with changing the colour wheel here is that if they've never sold one, their 'technicians' will have never seen one. And I've read that after the colour wheel change some ppl had other problems. I wonder if that is because the change is not done in a clean room environment and maybe dust and stuff gets in between the screen or onto the optics.
You are right that I would have no guarantee of getting a new set with a colour wheel, so I feel the only way is to either wait a couple of months and hope they make the change, or put it as a condition of order on the new set which he can forward when he orders it!!
Looks like the more realistic option will be waiting! Am due to check out the same TV which arrived in the same shipment and went to someone I know who is saying they have no noise. Gonna a) Check out his TV and b) Check the colour wheel if indeed its quiet!
NPM108,
It sounds like you are in a predicament. Luckily for most of us that have posted here, we have the option of taking our complaints to the store where we made the purchase. Your case is definitely unique.
My advice is not to settle. You shouldn't have to live with the noise, especially when this is a known issue that has a solution. Take a look at link to Samsung's FAQ entry about the colour wheel noise. Make sure you show what is written there to everyone you deal with as you try to solve this.
Samsung FAQ (http://erms.samsungusa.com/customer/sea/jsp/faqs/faqs_view.jsp?PG_ID=3&AT_ID=14953&PROD_SUB_ID=41&PROD_ID=-1)
Good Luck.
I was on the phone with Samsung about another issue, when I asked about the noisy colour wheel problem. The answer I got from the support person was so absurd yet hillarious, that I just have to post it here.
According to the support person, the harsh Canadian winter is just too cold for the factory installed colour wheel, and results in the high pitched whine . He also told me that the Samsung service depots are installing new colour wheels that can better handle the extreme temperatures. I guess it comes with a fur-lined parka and a toque. LOL. Until now I hadn't realized that I'm the only person in Canada with a furnace in my home. How do you guys watch TV in your sub-arctic living rooms? Anyhow, when I called his bluff, he immediately got frustrated and transferred me to the supervisor.
What a joke
:D
NPM108 2005-03-17, 06:23 AM Well guys the color wheel on my 46 has been changed. Here's the verdict:
Air Bearing Wheel fitted and jumper removed see picture 1 for jumper location.
On the box of the new colour wheel you should have a sticker with information specific to that colour wheel the most important being the Index Delay and Actuator Settings which are hand written. See Picture 2 for my settings.
Also it states that when changing the colour wheel you need to adjust the Delay of DDP 1010 (1011 in my case) the initial delay value being 223 if you have a difference in Red due to a deviation of where the colour wheel is assembled. See Picture 3
I didn't touch mine as the Reds are fine and so far I have just set the Index Delay and Actuator Settings which were hand written on the new colour wheel box Picture 2. The rest of the settings I still have to do.
Not sure if this helps. No noise so far!!

That's a great post and is very interesting. Thanks NPM108.
I'm glad the noise went away for you. Now you can sit back, relax and watch your beautiful new TV.
WpgDan 2005-03-23, 09:29 AM Now I am frustrated that my service guy never changed any setting in my service menu, when he replaced the color wheel, and I am seeing on a few movies, tv shows, usally on people's face's below there eye's it looks like as if they have black eyes but with a heavy red tint to them, more or less look,
Not sure what to try to adjust or change ?
I will see if I can get a picture of it in the next couple day's
sammydlp 2005-04-05, 09:38 AM Hi all,
i purchased a DLP56 inch in Jan 2005 from FS and in the last couple of weeks a humming sound has appeared and also when i switch the TV off the sound stays on for about two seconds even though the TV is off. After reading this thread i looked at the back of the TV and it was assembled in mexico with a production date of OCT 2004, so i guess this could be one of the faulty wheels installed in this TV. Do i call FS or Samsung to have it repaired. If Samsung does any one have their telephone# as i could not locate it on their website. Thanks
1-800-SAMSUNG is the number.
I have heard that the noisy colour wheel may be back (see Mythdraugs post in the New Colour Wheel Problem- All Red! Thread) in the latest production run. You may, therefore, be better off having it serviced.
Keep us posted.
gucci 2005-04-06, 11:04 PM WpgDan which repair shop are you actually dealing with?
I have a 5663 that is doing the same thing. Had tech out from Autek Labs. As soon as he walked in he said he'll order a replacement color wheel.
Part should be in 2-3 days (if Samsung has it in stock). Repair will be done in house.
Will keep you posted.
I've had my sammy DLP 56" for about 2 weeks now, October 04 MEXICO build. I belive I also have the noisy colour. Purchased in T Bay, but was shipped from warehouse in TORONTO
jagg01 2005-04-13, 03:43 PM I also have the noisy 56 inch FS toronto. Thank's to G30 for bringing this all to our attention. I have called samsung regarding an issue with my timer light- was flickering. Looks like my unit has a bad fan as well as a loud colour wheel. They suggested I call a tech place. Spoke with them and they said to call FS and get it replaced as it would take a couple of weeks for the part (no questions they new the problem). I went to FS but not wanting to get a new Mexico OCT 2004 model I asked them to check before doing the switch to see if they had another unit. I have not heard back yet. I'm getting close to the end of my month and will likely do the switch anyway or at least get something in writing. Note FS has there screens on sale I got a $200 price adjustment this week.
sammydlp 2005-04-13, 04:49 PM Hi All ,
I had consumer electronics come out to check my TV (which was producing the hmmmmmming sound) and the tech said it was normal, as there are three fans in the back and they are supposed to make a sound. Now not sure what to do, do i believe him or go to another repair shop to get the wheel replaced. ? Should the TV have any sound coming from it or should you hear a hmminnnng sound. Any advise would be great. Thanks
