I found this FAQ on www.samsungusa.com site. The TV should not make a noise when they are on. Check it out.

Everyone reading this thread should take a look at that link.

Samsung says very clearly in their FAQ that the TV should make no continuous noise when it is turned on. If your's does, then you probably have a defective colour wheel.

If you are lucky like scotta that has a June 2004 then you will probably hear no colour wheel noise.

Purchased my 5063W here in Winnipeg at FS. They mentioned it was coming from a warehouse in Edmonton.
Built in Tijuana
September 2004

Seems to be functioning normally so far. No louder than a hard drive or similar. About the same noise level as my DCT6208 HD-PVR.
Only issues I've had is it won't accept the discrete Power-On code consistently and 2 to 3 times had shut itself off for apparently no reason.
Not too worried yet with the FS 5 year extended warranty :D

Guess what? The Future Shop in Ajax also has a super quiet HLP4663 demo built June/2004 in Korea.

This and Bruce's information give us this first tally:

* 5 HLP4663 purchased in the Toronto area w/ noisy colour wheels.
* 5 of 5 were built in Tijuana.
* 4 of 5 were built in October 2004.
* 1 of 5 was built in September 2004.

* 3 of 3 Demo models checked were very quiet and built in Korea.

I'm beginning to see a trend here. My brother just bought an HLP4663 and will be receiving it this week. He is also in the GTA, and I will report his manufacture details and noise levels when it arrives.

Another bit of information I'm waiting for....My friend in Windsor bought a HLP5063 on Boxing Day. He says it is very quiet, and will be forwarding me the manufacture details today. The interesting bit is that his TV came from Future Shop's Windsor distribution centre, which lends credence to the notion that the bad batch of TVs were sent to the Toronto area.
Confirmed, G. My TV was also manufactured in November 2004, in Mexico, but was shipped from Future Shop's Windsor DC.

It makes sense to me that if there was a bad batch of parts used in maufacture, the affected TVs might have serial numbers significantly close to one another. Perhaps a call-out for serial numbers of bad-colour-wheel sets on this and other forums can yield enough statistically significant data to prove something.

Either way, all of the remarks I have seen here and elsewhere about bad colour wheel bearings, bad bulbs, "watermarked" projection screens and the like seems to indicate that Samsung has something to answer for with respect to this like of TVs.

After FS exchanged the TV twice, yesterday we finally got a quiet Samsung HLP4663 . It took 3 tries, but the high pitched whine is not present (knock wood) on this Novemeber 2004 Tijauna unit.

When I went to FS to exchange the 2nd TV, I was told I had to wait, as there were none left in stock. Not wanting to recieve a 3rd TV from the suspect October 2004 batch, I viewed this as a good thing, and it payed off.

My suggestion to anyone with a whinning HLP series TV- don't tolerate it. Samsung says that the TV should operate quietly, and that's what you should expect. If you purchased from a retailer that allows it, keep exchanging the TV until you get a good one. Retailers have alot more influence on suppliers than any of us have. If you can't exchange the TV, call 1-800-Samsung and tell them about the noise while taking full advantage of your warranty. Eventually someone will get the message........

G30 - My service call is tomorrow morning so we'll see what happens.

My co-worker got her 4663 from 2001 on the weekend. A November 2004 build from Tijuana --- no colour wheel noise (at least she says she doesn't hear anything).

hlp 4663 here. Made in Tijuana, July, 2K4. Fan is a bit loud, and there is a noticable whine. How high pitched should it be? I can hear it during quiet parts in movies, but its not so loud that I hear it all the time. Is that normal?

Yes let us know if it makes a difference. Ask the technician if your color wheel has air or plastic bearings?

Counting my new TV, Pigdog's and you co-workers that's 3 quiet HLP series November 2004 TVs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the problem may be solved in November builds.

No it is not normal. You describe exactly the problem I had on my two previous TVs. I suggest you take advantage of your warranty and get it fixed. Follow the link to the DLP FAQ that Chugor posted a few days ago. At that website, you can hear "straight from the horse's mouth" that there should be no high pitched whine at all.

Well...I had my service call and nothing is resolved. The tech from Hinet Systems didn't have the best English so it was tough to get into much detail. He removed the colour wheel and cleaned it. When I asked if it was an air bearing unit he said yes. With the back open he showed me two fans. One is on the DMD (very quiet) and another on the left side of the unit (if you are looking from the front). This is the fan for the bulb. This is what he says is making the hum and is normal. It stops spinning/making noise as soon as the screen goes dark (a few seconds after you turn it off) but the other smaller/quieter fan still goes for a minute or two.

Does this make any sense??

Bottom line....maybe it is normal...but it bugs me...although not enough to return it. I'm sure I can tune it out. My room is only 12'x12' so it could very well the size of the room that enhances it.

Hmmmmm.....

Hi Bruce Fan. Did you check out the Samsung DLP FAQ link posted a few messages ago? It describes in detail exactly what is normal as far a noise goes. Personally, since I exchanged for a November 2004 TV, I have heard absolutely no noise apart from the soft fan sound when the TV is on Mute. This sound is soft enough to be inaudible when my house furnace or refridgerator are working even if the TV is on Mute.

I guess you can try different ways to reduce the sound. I experimented with placement and fitting pressed foam mats to the back of the TV (I still have the set I made for my noisy TVs, You can have them if you like.) It seems to make a difference. Heavy curtains near the TV also absorb the sound it makes.

I just bought a DLP5063 last night and it is very quiet so far. I wish I could find these threads BEFORE I go out and buy these things! From what I read here, there have been no reports of 5063's having this issue. Have you heard of any?

Bruce Fan
2005-02-03, 02:40 PM
G30 - Yep, I did read it and printed it off for the tech. He says that noise is normal for that fan. I'm past my 30 warranty from FS so I have to go the service route. I'm going to go to FS or BB and listen to one of units on display. I want to put my head right in the back and turn it on and off and see if I hear it there.

If I don't hear it I'm calling for another service call.

Bruce Fan- I would do the same. My new set makes almost no noise at all. It's not normal to hear that high pitched whine.

Having said that, isn't the picture awesome?

Bruce Fan
2005-02-04, 03:37 PM
G30- Well I went to BB at lunch and it was too damn loud so I couldn't really judge anything. I know a FS that has a separate display room so maybe that'll be better.

Yep, the picture is fantastic. Unfortunately I see rainbows but I still love it. My eyes/brain have pretty much adapted in that I rarely see them while watching. It's when my eyes/head move away from the set that I see them. That I can live with.

Who is your supplier? I'm with Rogers using the SA8300HD via HDMI.

Interesting. I wonder what fdb stands for? Do you know Dan?

Personally, I have a new problem with my TV. Let's just say the Super Bowl looked more like a pudding bowl on my 4663. I am about to call Samsung and will report shortly.
