Uwish 2005-02-03, 10:04 PM Hello all,
I just took the plunge with the 6412. It seems to be working fine but, I can't figure out this dual tuner. I record a program, hit swap on the remote and try to change channels and it tells me I have to either stop recording to switch channels or continue recording.
Yes, I do have the dual tuner 6412 in case people are asking and I have confirmed this. Is this just a newbie issue or is something up?

Sounds like you're following the right steps from what I have read. Sorry I can't be of any help yet Uwish, but I just picked up my 6412 today and will be hooking it up Friday so I'll be following this thread.

I know once you hit record it seems as though u must wait around 30 seconds before u can change the tuner , as for it saying stop or continue recording this only happens when you try to change the channel and you are recording( for myself anyways )
Tundramojo, did you end up getting it from Future?. I still haven't heard from the salesman at the Bridgeport store but he was off on Wed & Thu.
That will be great if it's in tomorrow after work. I'll finally be able to record.
Thanks.

Future Shop, yes, but I picked it up at the downtown Vancouver store (Robson). I tried phoning the Lansdowne & downtown stores earlier today but neither was answering their phones, so I walked the Robson store and, according to the sales guy, they had 1 left. He said they had 400 in all the stores total and only 4 were left. I'd call all the stores to check if I were you. I just got lucky.
There was a message on my machine Wednesday after work from Future Shop. It was a young Asian guy and I could barely understand what he said (no disrespect, for those who recall Bill Parcells' press conference blunder) but I did make out that it was Future Shop and that they had something in that I was looking for. Must have been the 6412 and likely Lansdowne in Richmond, because I left my name with an Asian guy there (1+1 = 2). Try there, you might have some luck.

I have not experienced this behaviour. Once I hit swap I can change channels on that tuner just fine. The swap is actually occuring in that you definately change your feed over to the other tuner? The only time I've experienced this is when I have both tuners tied up recording.
Or if you're using a timer recording, are you sure that the other tuner hasn't taken the recording task, and then you actually swap over into the one that's doing the recording?
If you list the exact steps (including initial channels, etc) I can try to duplicate the behaviour with my box later tonight.
Uwish 2005-02-04, 11:21 AM It looks like there may be something wrong with my unit. When I hit the swap feature nothing happens, it does not switch to the other tuner. I have tried recording two shows at the same time, recording them swapping etc and neither work.
Felgar 2005-02-04, 11:25 AM Your remote probably just came without the swap button programmed in... See this thread; that should get you back on track. :)

Glad to hear you got your 6412!!!!! Must have sold the 6200......?
Yes, I had the exact same problem a couple of days ago with my new 6412. I was pushing the swap button and expecting it to change instantly.....it didn't! I used the programming instructions given to you in the above link and now it works like a hot-damn!
But be warned, it is not an instantaneous tuner change-over.....it takes up to a second or so for the tuners to swap....you will get a different channel when they finally swap-over or if you happen to be to have both tuners on the same channel, there will be a slight timeshift...don't know why?
I experimented the other night by recording one HD channel and watching another...works great!
These machines must have very large buffers!
I can also concur that the 6412 is almost silent compared to the 6208( I have both in the house!) The 6208 whirrs and clicks and such, on or off...the 6412 is dead quiet!
Uwish 2005-02-04, 12:30 PM Well,
I think I might have someone interested in my old unit yes. I did realize the swap feature would take about a second to swap tuners but my unit did nothing. I actually tried to do a search for the programming code to re-program the swap but was not able to find it. Thanks a bunch for posting the link again, I am going to give it a try today at lunch time. If it works I will be a very happy man, seems strange that the feature wouldn't be programmed in right from the start, I bet alot of people on Shaw that get this unit may have similar issues and if they do not have an awesome resource like DHC I could foresee many usless calls to tech support over an issue like this!
thanks again and I will post my results this PM

My 6412 may be fairly quiet, but I wouldn't call it dead quiet. I can't hear any fan noise or whirring from my seating distance (12'), but I can hear a slight ticking sound (hard drive access I assume) during quiet passages. Not annoying but certainly present. It is dead quiet when the unit is off.
Anyone else hearing this?
lorenmc 2005-02-04, 02:44 PM I can definitely hear noise from my 6412 when it is on that sounds like hard drive activity. When I turn it off I still hear a bit of a hum but the hard drive activity noise is gone. My 6412 is definitely not dead quiet either on or off.

Uwish 2005-02-04, 02:44 PM UPDATE: reprogramming the swap feature into the remote has restored the swap function...thanks a lot for the info...
JesseJ 2005-02-04, 02:47 PM Mine is qhizzing all the time, but no big deal. There is absolutly no fan noise however, which was a little more of a concern.
Who turnstheir unit off? I leav it on all the time, and when I'm not there, leave it tuned to 301 and 302 to give me that 30 min buffer, so I can see what was on, or even record a program from the beginning (if it's in that 30 min window). Anyone else?

I was going to ask the same thing. Not for the buffer, but I leave my 6208 on because to turn it off while recording stops the recording. Finally figured that best thing to do was to just leave it on. The 6412 appears to have different software (the series recording feature), so I was wondering if you can turn it off without interrupting recording.
JesseJ 2005-02-04, 03:10 PM You can't turn it off at all when it's recording.

Well, compared to the noisy 6208, the 6412 IS dead quiet...
I can hear a slight fan noise on the 6412 when it is off but you have to be right next to it......If there is no noise at all, I would also be concerned.....The 2500 series certainly needed a cooling fan as these units run quite hot, on or off......
Shaggy 2005-02-04, 06:41 PM If you have a series recording scheduled, and the unit is not currently recording, then you can turn it off, and it will wake up and record your show at the right time.
Hi guys,I just got mine activated tonight after getting the call from Future's Bridgeport location this evening. So far it is neat. I got it for 697 after providing the visions 50$ coupon.
As we speak I am watching National Security and set up a show to record that started at 10:30. I stayed on 61 and at 10:30 the red light on the box went on on it's own so I am assuming it is recording. This is cool.
For some reason maybe it was all the excitement it took me like 20 min to set up the power button to fire up the tv and the dct at the same time. I was on the line with Shaw for at least 30-40 minutes as I had them remove my 6200 at the same time.
Gonna play with this some more. I'll eventually get to programming that skip function.
Oh yeah the analogue pic quality is exactly the same as my 6200 was so no complaints on that. It wasn't too bad and Im happy it didn't get worst.
They had like 6 or 7 left after me taking the one I bought.
I just tested the swap button and it works instantly.
neila 2005-02-05, 02:29 AM Just picked up my 6412 on Wednesday from Visions. All the features work great except if I power it off and then back on, the audio is there, the guide and menu is there but no picture. The only way to get a picture is to go to a recording, ounce that has started I can get the Picture back on either tuner. It never did this the first few days, it only started tonight. Any comments would be appreciated.
