I have an opportunity to buy a used 6412 phase 1 hd pvr for $350. Should I go for it? Or am I going to be disappointed with future problems? Would appreciate feedback from current owners. Thanks.

My opinion: don't buy Phase 1 box. I used to have a P1 box for a year, but finally swapped with a P3 and it's been so far so good. P1 has higher temperature, DVI port, and a PATA drive inside (if my memory is still correct). P3 runs cool, and has a SATA drive and HDMI port instead. P1 seems to me less capable when dealing with imperfect reception signal in my case: it could easily shows choppy video & audio on live viewing, recordings playback might be paused by itself & black out in the middle due to corruption (some of the worst ones will cause my P1 to reset when trying to Fast Forward over the corrupted portion!)

P3 is more refined and robust, not any bad signal or recordings can kill it so far in my 2 years use.

I have a co-worker who is getting 4:3 on her HD channels with the PVR. I assume the setup on the PVR is set incorrectly for her TV. I'm at work and cannot remember how to tell her how to enter the setup menu on the PVR.

Turn off PVR and Hold down Menu until the screen comes up? Any idiot proof instructions for her around here for what the optimal setting for and newer 52" plasma should be?

That should do it. She only has to press Menu, not hold it down after turning the power to the PVR off. Hopefully she can figure the rest out or you can help her through it over the phone. It could also be the method she used to connect the two. Did she use either the component or HDMI (if her box has it)?

Is there a way to map a command from the original remote to a specific button on the Atlas remote? The instructions you refer to don't suggest that this is possible, and it just 'knows' what the command being fired from the source remote maps to.
Following the instrcutions to lean a new command works perfectly, but I can't make my power button learn a command.

I want the power button when on mode Aux to learn a command from another remote, but it is not working. Is this not possible?

It should be possible to program the power button for a different device according to the instructions. I would suggest trying to program the AUX function with the specific device code and then reprogram the other keys using the 'learn' method.

I've a Satellite that I want to record the signal from and I want to know if I can use the DCT6412III to that?

This might be possible but only if your 6412 is subscribed to cable. Is it? If it is I can tell you how to do it.

Hi Guys,

I just got a HD PVR from Shaw. I hooked it up via HDMI cables. Now when I turn the TV on the speakers crackle for about 3 minutes, and it then settles down and is fine.

I have tried different HDMI cables and HDMI outlets with no success. The HD PVR is the only thing that makes the tv speakers do this. If I use my blueray there is no problem, Wii no issues, if the cable is plugged directly into the TV, no issues.

I have tried different sound settings on the PVR with no success aswell.

Do you guy know of anything else I could try? Before getting SHaw to replace my box.

Cheers,
Chris

What do you mean if the cable is plugged directly into tv , no issue? have you tried a different input on the tv? what about component instead of hdmi

by that I mean I can plug the TV cable directly into the tv, and I do not have the sound issue.

I have not tried component becasue I do not have the cables.

I have tried all the HDMI inputs, makes no differance.

Hi, I have a 6412 III.

Is there ANY WAY to get good widescreen PIC on the SD channels? The stretched option sucks. I have gone in the menu you get when the unit is off and you press menu, the options are limited.

Any ideas?

Doesn't that depend a lot on your TV? Some manage the aspect ratio better than others. The Sharps, for example, have stretch and then a 'smart stretch' (forget the actual name). The former literally takes the whole 4:3 and spreads it evenly across the 16:9 screen everything looks flattened. The latter keeps the centre of the screen in the proper aspect, then progressively spreads the edges out further so - presuming most of the action is in the centre of the TV - it looks a 'bit' more normal.

Sorry to post this but I am looking for a thread that I believe 57 started that was all info regarding Motorola set top box information.
It had info like cold boot, hdd dvr re-set and a bunch of other good stuff.
Thanks in advance, I'm pretty lame at finding stuff in these forums.

Hi everyone,

I have had a 6412 for a few years now. I have issues with freezing and slow downs with the menu. I just purchased a 3416 for another room, and low and behold a faster and more consistent menu in regards to speed.

Both boxes are running the new 16.74 firmware and the slow down with the 6412 was always no matter what the firmware.

I have to think that the 3416 most have more memory or processor cababilities than the 6412. Can this be confirmed by anybody?

Thanks

This might be a long shot but, have you tried the remote from your 'new' pvr on your old one? It could a battery related issue, or I could be completely off base. It can't hurt to try if you haven't already done so.

Yep, no difference... I am thinking the analog portion of the 6412 slows down the firmware.

The 6412's and the 3416's use the same firmware...no difference. You hit the nail on the head with your theory about the better electronics ;) It has nothing to do with the analog tuner portion.

This seems to have only started since the channel realignment. Recordings from channels 230ish and up are most frequently corrupt as well as a few of the 90-ish digital channels. I'm not sure if I'm on the digital or analog channel map. Watching any channel live is fine and recording non-HD channels (and apparently some of the non-digital channels like Movie Central on 60) does not result in the same issue. Eg. last few episodes of Pillars of the Earth on 244 (MC HD) was unwatchable via recording, but fine LIVE, and fine recorded off of channel 60 (MC SD) for the same episode.

I'm in Surrey, BC as well. I also have the 1TB expander (Seagate, stock) and a cable amplifier (supplied by Shaw) on my line from +8 years ago.

Anyone have any thoughts?
