I experienced a bug I've never seen before with my 6412. I've had it since oct 2005 and also a 6208 since Dec 2004. I got home today and turned on the tv and the on screen guide was showing up as transparent. It was completely see through. I thought it must be a new feature as it was neat to scroll through the guide but not block the actual show. A minute later the 6412 shut off and basically reset itself. It downloaded its info again and the menu bar is back to normal. I'm curious if anyone has seen this transparent guide before.

That happened to me tonight. It looked like a bad video card in a computer, different colour lines almost everywhere where there should have been light blue, various blocks of colour or you see the program under the text. I power-cycled mine (it hadn't reset yet.) and so far so good. I've had mine since Nov 2005 and this is a first. I wonder if would have anything to do with firmware upgrade we got about 3 weeks ago.

I got the transparent guide this morning after powering off last night because of not being able to rewind a live program. Will power off again later today.

My daughter has set up a couple of series recordings for shows that air multiple times per day. I can go ahead and manually stop the recodings for duplicate shows, but they always reset themselves, generally within about 24hrs. Is this a product of the guide 'refreshing' itself?

I've changed the rules to record only new shows, eventhough she still wants to see some of the repeats. In addition some programs have incomplete guide data that doesn't indicate whether or not the show is new or a repeat. There are some shows that it will record 7 or 8 episodes in a day...if only I had a 500GB drive ;)

In cases like that it is better to use a timed recording set to weekly, and then delete the episode if it is a repeat.

I now just record Global Toronto from 6 pm to 8pm, to get the FOX sunday evening schedule. It is much better than 4 copies of Family Guy and 4 simpsons every week.

can you even set a recording for a certain time with shaw and a 6416, or am I just that dense?

Yes, I think you need to look in Menu/PVR/Set a Recording

Hello. I just purchased a used 6412 phase 3. got it set up, everything is working good...except for one thing, which may be nothing.

there is a steady, rhythmic noise coming (apparently) from the hard drive.

very quiet, almost unnoticeable with the tv volume on: "bzzt....bzzt....bzzt..."

i was worried that it had been damaged in shipping, but i've tested out all the functions and everything seems to be working great.

should I be concerned?

Hi,
Has anybody else had this.
Last Thursday I recorded the office, went to watch it at theweekend. It showed 31 mins
on the 'List' option, but when I played it I found it had only recorded 5 mins of the
show. A pain to be honest !!
I often worry recording my high priority shows ( Prison Break, The Office).
Any ideas ?
Thx.

All it takes is something in the recorded stream to make the player think the file is complete. We've had it happen occasionally, and it's quite frustrating. That said, all is not lost. If you still have the recording, here's something to try: rather than "play" (at regular speed) through the early ending, fast forward through the trouble spot (at maximum speed).
There's a chance the playback will skip over the corrupted portion of the stream. No guarantees, but it's worked for us a few times.

Just to be clear, this technique only works when the PVR indicates one thing, while playback ends before that time has elapsed. That fits your scenario, so hopefully you still have the recording.

Good luck!

Murstang: The harddrive is always spinning and recording in the buffer. A small buzzing sound would be concidered normal.

Thx oilblue. I did delete it though. I ended up downloading it and watching in on my PC.
I'll keep it in mind for next time.

I'm having problems locating the differences between the 3416 and 6416 and if I should be looking for a phase 3? I also read somewhere that you need to have all digital to get the 3416? Which one does Shaw sell on their website? Sorry for the newb questions, it has been difficult locating all this info in the forum.

The 3416 only comes in phase iii (hdmi out). Shaw will automatically give you an all digital mapping.

I believe they are mostly selling the 3416, but it is possible you could get a 6416.

if you go to broadband.motorola.com you can find info on both models.

The 3416 can only access digital channels as it doesn't have an analog tuner. All digital service is only available in some areas. Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver are the ones I know of that have all digital TV service but there may be others. The 3416 is therefore cheaper than the 6416 that has tuners for both digital and analog channels.

We don't have the all digital service here in Kelowna but I would definitely try the all digital service if it comes available. I get noisy analog channels at times which should be better when when distributed in digital form.

The one phase III model improvement that I really notice is the 3 D comb filter that gives a less noisy picture on the analog channels when displayed on a large screen TV, 65" in my case. The degree of this problem with the old cable boxes depends on your TV and your video connections from the cable box to the TV.

Alright, thanks for the help. I'm in Banff and we barely just went from having 4 HD channels to 11. I really don't think we'll get all digital any time soon. Such a shame if I buy the 6416, I will have to try and switch down the road.

Add Victoria to the All Digital list... but afaik Shaw's charging the same price for the 3416 as the 6416.
