: Shaw DCT6412 Information / Questions / Problems
Shaw Guru 2007-06-15, 02:26 PM MY DEEPEST APOLOGIES. You will want to indeed check option 4 but it is the IN-BAND STATUS not the OOB that I previously called it. (had the right option just the wrong name). Sorry for the confusion TheIgster. As soon as I saw your signal I know it was the incorrect screen you were in but you followed the name I had specified so my apologies.
TheIgster 2007-06-15, 03:49 PM No big deal Shaw Guru. Thanks for the information. That's better:
Tuner 1: 34.3 Tuner 2: 35.2
Chiu.0606 2007-06-16, 01:00 AM From my own experience, 6412P1 seems to be very sensitive and unforgiving to any bad signal recording; video/audio will be dropped/paused/pixels/black-out. It's harddrive is a slow 5400rpm 1M buffer. It's been acting up a lot in the last several months after used for close to 2 years. Also, maybe its error correction capability is not as great as later models when the machine is busy dealing with signal from two turners at the background and playing back corrupted recording at the same time, it will just die.
After my Shaw tech swapped it out with a P3 last week, I don't have any more bad/dead playback problem. FF and Rev speed is faster and smoother. And P3 temperature (as feel from top of chassis/power supply area is cooler). P3 has a SATA 7200rpm 8M buffer drive, it's a big improvement for several simultanous video/audio streaming read/write throughput.
Worth a swap if it's not a signal level problem.

I have 2 of these that i bought from a friend in hollywood, florida. THey worked perfectly fine for him, but he decided to sell them. I live about 20 miles north of him, and they will not work at all for me. They turn on, and work, however when I scroll through the channels, they all say "Will be getting teh channel soon" or something to that effect
the 3rd one i somehow screwed up. I tried to reboot so you could get pay-per-view, and i cant get anything now, it wont even change channels. IS there ANY way i can reset these boxes or somehow reconfigure them to work?
any help would be appreciated on how to fix these.
DCTGoddess 2007-06-25, 05:43 PM Comcast got some of Adelphia's Florida terratory. (Time-Warner got the other half.) Because of that, Comcast inherited some areas that use Scientific Atlanta boxes, and head-ends that are technically incompatable w/ Moto DCTs. If you're lucky not to be in one of those areas, then you have to call Comcast to have your boxes added to their system. They may give you a hard time, since you own rather than rent the boxes, but, there is no law preventing them from activating a bought box (that hasn't been stolen).
Deline 2007-06-25, 11:30 PM Hello,
I have a Motorola DCT6412 PVR. I recently moved and believe that somehow the audio has been muted on the PVR, all of my recordings have no sound.
I want to fix this, but all the guides and information tell you how to do this with the Shaw remote that comes with the box. I have a Motorola DRC800 remote, is there anyway of fixing this problem it would be much appreiciated.
Thanks,
Thomas
loracweb 2007-06-25, 11:52 PM Have you tried looking at the product page for the remote?

DCTGoddess 2007-07-07, 06:47 PM I have my DCT3412 next to my recliner, on a TV tray, to keep the DVR well-ventilated. It means to get to one side of the room, I have to make sure I step over all the cords, and not trip. Well, the unthinkable did happen. I got tangled on the AC cord, tried to untangle myself, and got tangled yet again.
Suddenly, out of the corner of my eye, I saw the TV tray tip over and the DCT crashed to the carpeted floor. :o I gasped and then checked for a heart beat. Sure enough, the HDD was clicking away and buffering, still (now upside down). Once I righted the box and table, I checked everything out and the DVR was fine and working. Save for two small scratches on the vent casing, my DCT came out unharmed. They're surprisingly durable.
Shaw Guru 2007-07-09, 03:41 PM You could always go into the local Shaw office and purchase a replacement Shaw remote for $14.99. :)
loracweb 2007-07-09, 03:44 PM Can I get them cheaper if I buy in bulk? :p
I thought they charged closer to $30. $15 is a reasonable price.
Shaw Guru 2007-07-09, 07:30 PM They used to cost $25 but last year the price was reduced. I don't believe they will sell more than 1 or 2 at a time.
I have waited several days to give the new firmware a chance to correct all the problems I have with the 6412(second machine). It still cuts out audio, only once every two days rather than twice a day. It still won't record scheduled programs as it says it is 100% full, it always less than 40% full. This has happened three times in past two days. It still won't record certain shows that I set a series recording for. It will list it under series recordings but doesn't record or have a red dot when I set it up. It also stopped loading the tv guide the day after the formware was updated. I don't see that the firmware update did much of anything for my 6412. I guess I will call Shaw and try a third 6412. Is this happening to others?
Chiu.0606 2007-07-10, 03:55 PM Jani,
From what I've seen with my DCT6412 Phase 3 in the last 7 days after F/W upgrade, the audio cut-off bug had totally disappeared. I've exercised enough(heavily) FF/REV operations with recording playback (all day long Live Earth Concert in HD!) last weekend without a single glitch. 100% bug is still unknown to me at the time.
According to the latest F/W list of DCT from Wiki page, seems like the Phase 1,2,3 boxes are still NOT using same version of F/W, so everyone's milage might be different at the end.
You might have to find out what phase of 6412s you actually have in the past & present (after all these swappings) to get a better understanding of problem. Hope you have enough signal strength too :)
beanagee1 2007-07-10, 05:30 PM I can confirm that my 6412 with the new software still has the audio drop out problem (muting) during fast forwarding or 30 sec. skipping.
Chiu.0606 2007-07-10, 07:13 PM beanagee1,
May I ask you which phase is your 6412 box?
hedge 2007-07-11, 10:27 AM I have a phase 1 /2000 and a phase 3 /2300. They are running the same software (74.54-4003) and firmware (16.41). This is in Shaw Calgary.

Hedge,
Since you have both DCT6412 P1 & P3 with the same latest version of F/W, it's better to ask you whether the famous FF/REV audio lost problem still exists with your boxes or not after the upgrade.
My P3 doesn't seem to have the said problem anymore (no matter playback in SD/HD, Analog Audio Out/Digital SPDIF, 2.0/5.1), but many other people out there still report audio problem !?

Jani: My PVR (6412/2300 Phase 3) at home has never had any audio drop outs what so ever. When I moved into my new home I wired all new lines for my cable and they brought a new line in from the street for me as well.
As for the 100% full bug again this is something I have never had happen. EVER. Knock on wood. What i have found is that some of these 100% full errors are also user created. (Have duplicated this on occassions in the past on other PVRs by being on the channel to record. By watching the show while it recording it. By watching delayed TV and then trying to record a program in full after it already started).
For the red dot not showing up on certain channels or programs this may happen on occassion. Try setting the recording for a different channel and see if it will work there. I use the US time shifted channels for most recordings. Also many people set up a recording for new only and then when looking in the guide they see no red dot and assume there is a problem when many times the show is actually a repeat or the guide does not say if it is new.
I would recommend investigating the signal coming into the DCT first as this causes the majority of issues with the PVR (next to known issues of course). Make sure the cable is going direct from the wall to the terminal as well. And if you have many outlets in the home in use (more than 4) you may want to get a 2nd line or get Shaw to install a booster if the signal is low.
Timsta 2007-08-02, 12:50 AM Hi Everyone,
First post here. I just picked up a DCT6412 two days ago (upgraded from the regular HD box). I had it set up yesterday. Everything seems to work by ONE thing.
For some wierd reason, the DCT6412 doesn't output via my digital optical output to my receiver. i've checked the cables.. swapped cables. switched outputs..
its frustrating. i can't get the new PVR to output sound to my home theatre.. instead.. all my sound comes thru the tv.
oh. i am using the HDMI cable from shaw box -> tv. The optical audio cable..goes from shaw box -> receiver.
this is relatively the same set up that I had before with the regular HD digital Shaw box. except.. instead of a HDMI/DVI cable.. I'm using a HDMI/HDMI cable.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
jumpy27 2007-08-02, 04:40 AM Try using the SPDIF output instead of the fibre optic.
