: Shaw DCT6412 Information / Questions / Problems

I live in victoria and we don't have the Digital PVR so I am thinking of perhaps forking out the dough for the HD PVR. However I don't have a HDTV. Will all the digital and analog channels work on this device? Shaw customer service and London Drugs have both said it will but I am questioning it.
My TV is very new and works with digital TV.
Thanks just want to know if anyone else has tried this.

It will work just fine with a regular (non HD) tv. I've used them myself in the past.
Personally, if I were you I'd look at getting a 3rd party HD PVR until Shaw starts selling the non HD PVR in your area. $850 is a lot to spend when you don't even have an HDTV. Your 3rd party DCT will hold its value quite well in the meantime, and you should be able to sell it for close to what you paid for it. Of course, if you plan to make the jump to HD in the next few months then you might just want to bite the bullet on the HD box.

Thanks for the info!

Has anyone been able to activate a 6412/2005 with Shaw in Winnipeg. I have been trying, but up to now the response from the Shaw techs is that 3rd party 6412/2000 units will be added to their inventory but the 6412/2005 models will not be added. Any info is greatly appretiated.

Just tell them it is a 6412/2000. They won't know the difference. Read more in the activating a 3rd party dct thread.

I have talked to several techs (and I know they make notes) so if I tell them that it is a /2000 but with the same ua# and serial # will this just add to the confusion??
PS thanks for the quick responce!!

Well, you have a few options. I would start by just phoning them back and right away say you bought a 3rd party dct off of ebay and would like it added to your account. They probably aren't too likely to look at the notes on your account, and even so they generally don't keep info like what dct's you've requested to add in an easy to read location.
Other options are to call a different shaw region and have them do it, or have a friend call in and get it added to his account and then transfer it.
Don't mention anything about having talked to them before about that box.
Shaw Winnipeg can be difficult at times. I think they do it on purpose too.

1. The red dot in the guide indicating a scheduled recording is very inconsistent. Sometimes it appears in the grid of channels and times. You can be scrolling through the guide and there are dots on some but not all of your scheduled recordings. Often the dot appears in the upper left beside the miniature live show picture – but not always. Sometimes you have to press Info in order to tell if a recording is planned. If you are using Listings by Channel and press the record button the screen blinks, but a red dot does not appear in the grid square. In this case, for sure you have to press Info to see whether you were successful.
Shaw suggested the workaround of "Future Recordings" but that takes a lot of button pushes to leave the guide and return. What is needed is a convenient and reliable way to see, while scrolling the guide or mini-Guide, if someone has already set the PVR to record the show you are considering right now.
I have lurked and searched for months, but have found no-one else complaining.

I agree that the red dot is inconsistent. I've noticed that when I press the record button while scrolling the Guide, the display on the front of the cable box "blinks". If I see the blink and then check the detail screen for the program, I find I have been successful, whether I saw the red dot in the listings view or not.
It's mildly annoying, but I haven't complained. I'll bet this is widespread.

I sat down to check what I had recorded last night and the PVR was showing 100% full. I immediately assumed that this was the "100% full bug" so I went ahead and deleted one of my 1 minute snips and it then reported 99% full. Looking into it a little further I discovered that the recording of The Sopranos that I had set was 875 minutes long and still recording. The bad thing is that there were a few shows that were set to delete "when space is needed" and it was systematically deleting them in order to continue on this giant recording...The saving grace is that most of these shows run multiple times so I'm able to catch them again at another time.

My issue is a minor one (albeit irritating) but it adds credence to the inconsistency of the red dot. You know how a one-time recording shows as one dot while a series recording shows a different symbol that implies multiple dots. Sometimes when I create or modify a series recording, it shows as a simple dot which annoys the hell out of me. I'd have to go back and modify the options to ensure it was indeed a series recording but the simple dot persists. Am I doing something wrong, and if not, is there a workaround for this? Or is it just "one of those things"?

Unwell: If you modify the one program it will show as a 1 time recording because the series recording has been modified for that specific program. If you modify the series it will still show as the multiple dots.

O.K. I've got another problem. I'm trying to create a series recording for Heroes on Monday on the NBC time-shifted channel. The red multiple dots won't show, either on the Guide or on the Info screen. I checked Future Recordings for Monday and there are no listings. It's probably safe to say the box is not recognizing the series recording. I think I've tried to the series recording five times with no luck. On the other hand, it will take a 1-time recording. What gives?

I have an interesting, although minor, issue. Today there are 3 programs set to record as series recordings. One at 6:30PM for 1hr, one at 7:00PM for 1/2 hour, and another at 9:00PM for an hour (the same show that it's already recording at 6:30PM). All three are shows that we've already watched, but because they lack specific "New" or "Repeat" info in the guide the box wants to record them. I tried to choose "Don't record this program" for all three, but it wont let me. I can only delete 2 of the 3, when I try to delete the 3rd one it automatically switches one of the other ones back to "record".
Again, it's minor because I'll just manually delete the program once it's recorded...but curious none-the-less.

Spitoon: This is a known issue and listed on the wiki known issues for the DVR. Have a read under the Bugs tab: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR

Unwell: Occassional recordings can not be set up on certain channels (no idea why from all my testing as I can't explain it). Try setting it up on a different channel (time shifted). Also make sure you set it to record all episodes not just new or repeat because if the the description in the write up says repeat and you have your series set to record only new it will not record.

Thanks Shaw Guru. This is a new episode on Monday, but I'll try again tonight setting it up to record ALL episodes, and see if that makes a difference.
The earlier timeshifted show at 7PM is the one that won't record, but it's the one I prefer. It's convenient since Heroes is normally shown at 10PM local time. I can then watch the recorded version around 8 or 9 at my convenience, which makes for an earlier bedtime!
I'll also try unplugging. In any case, the 1-time recording still seems to work. I'll just have to remember to do it every week.

You could also set up a recording in the option "Set a Recording" Basically it sets a recording on time, date and channel. The PVR has no idea what the program is so it just displays it in the list as a recording of "this date, time and channel". It also allows you to go in and monkey with the options on it and you can select a repeat option of every week at that time. try that as well. :-)

Hey thanks again Shaw Guru! That sounds like the old VCR or DVD-Recorder recording function. I didn't know that that's doable on the 6416. Will keep that in mind when I play around with the recording tonight.

Thats a good feature I use in the case I start watching a show and decide I am too tired to finish it I will set for a few minutes later until the show ends.
