Thanks Roreman! Appreciated. I tried to search for the subject but it did not bring that link for some reason. Thanks again!
DCTGoddess 2006-03-11, 06:15 PM Are you sure that they are not buffered? I thought after the firmware update
that you now had the ability to pause the music? If that is true, then we're
not actually saving anything by placing the box on channel 4xx when not in
use.
Well, my firmware (I'm a Comcast sub using i-Guide) hasn't budged from 9.19. When I tried pausing a song, the buffer bar came on & a circle w/ a line diagonally through it showed up instead of the 'pause' symbol, & it stayed in play mode. I also tried to record a song. It's possible, but you have to jump through hoops to do it. You can't simply hit record like a TV show. When you press record, you're prompted to chose a beginning & ending time, & so forth. By the time all that is entered, the song is practically finished! :(
snowboy 2006-03-15, 12:04 AM Is anyone with a combination of the 6412 and sony sxrd hooked up by hdmi experiencing a handshake or connection problem between thw tv and the box?
dsaintmb 2006-03-15, 02:13 PM I have HDMI hand shake problems with my 6412 and Dell W3201C. CSR told me new firmware update early spring. My guess is we will finally see Discovery HD at this time as well.
I am not happy that you have HDMI hand shake problems but am glad it's just not my Dell.
I'm no tech, but I keep my box on all the time now and change tuner that is sent to T.V. to a SD digital channel when switching inputs for PC or DVD. I have not had a Message from my T.V. or the green screen of death since doing this.

I get a total green screen sometimes, but not all the time. This situation is resolved by cycling through the inputs. As a point of interest, I bet that the Dell you have is manufactured by Sony. An internet search only finds this combination with 6412 problems. A firmware upgrade might address the issue , but only if Motorola is aware of it. I would suggest you complain to Shaw. I did and asked them to make Motorola aware. Let me know if your Dell is made by Sony.
dsaintmb 2006-03-17, 02:06 PM Sorry I don't know who manufactured my Dell. Model is W3201C.
This is not a sony>6412 only problem.

scroll down to bugs HDCP. That user has a Sharp.
I phoned Shaw to let them know and have had call backs from their engineers. Acording to Dell forums, Dell has sent Shaw T.V.s to work on other issues.(signal drops) so hopefully they will run into this problem too and fix accordingly with next firmware upgrade. I know I am being to optomistic.
Before when I would switch from HDMI one(shaw) to HDMI two(pc) and back again I would get the green or black screen (depending if STB is set to RGB or the y 4:4:4 thingamagig) of death. I had to unplug the DCT and replug. This would fix the problem until I swithced inputs again. This was annoying as u know cause the guide had to download again. If it happened while recording while that was a real pain.
This is my 3rd(yes 3rd) dell and 2nd 6412. I don't know how or why but I haven't had problems for a week or two.
Try unpluging the DCT. Unplug HDMI cable. Do a hard reset of the T.V(if u can). Keep T.V. on and in HDMI input mode. Replug HDMI cable than DCT and power on. Hope this helps.
Best of luck

winstonstar 2006-03-23, 10:40 PM I need advice I have had my shaw high def digital recorder for a year now and has been working great. For the last week it has been acting up by freezing etc and when change channels it starts working again. I phone shaw for support and they sent out a technichian and he said that it due to my splitter on the line to my digital recorder. He says that the recorder wont work with the splitter on it which i find funny as it has been working great over the year with no problem. Can these splitters break down it is about 15 years old or should I get a new one. If so what type and where do I get one of these from as My stereo doesnt get very good reception without it
Please help
thanks
Shaw has introduced the Motorola DCT6412. I thought we could use a thread specifically about this model, and I'm starting it off with some links and information that I have gathered recently.
The 6412 is the latest High Definition (HD) Digital Video Recorder (DVR) model in the Motorola 6xxx series of Digital Cable Terminal (DCT).
Main Features:
- Two tuners (vs. single tuner in 6208)
- 120 GB harddrive storage (vs. 80 GB in 6208)
- $748.88 (Shaw's list price, before any credits)
Shaw uses i-Guide software on their DCT boxes, which does support both tuners in the 6412 (as first demonstrated by Comcast in the USA).
Although there has been some discussion about the 6412 (http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=18908) in the Cogeco forum (http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=66), they are using the older Blue Guide software which does not support both of the tuners, and there are other software differences.
Here are some links with 6412 related information...

Shaw's implementation should be quite similar to Comcast's rollout of the 6412 in the USA since both are using i-Guide software. I'm adding links to some Comcast-related information since we may learn from their experiences.
(Note: Comcast is testing the Microsoft Guide in the Washington State area, so those experiences will not apply.)

Since it is 15 y.o. I would suggest replacing it with a new one. I have been told a 1.5ghz is the minimum to use. Maybe the signal strength has gone down in your area therefore the problem. Try without the splitter to see if that really is the problem. I bought a 1 to 3 splitter from Walmart (rca brand) that works well. Believe it cost $24 and is 2.5ghz with no problems. One feed for my tv,pvr, stereo.
technut 2006-03-24, 03:04 AM My experience is that Shaw will provide any splitters you need for free, and add an amplifier to the line too if that is what is required. I can't believe the tech that came to your house said it was the splitter and then didn't do anything to fix it! What poor service!
If I were you I'd just drop by the Shaw office and ask them for a splitter. Either that or call them up and tell them to send another tech out to bring your cablevision up to spec.

Hi dsaintmb,
I have the same Dell TV you do. According to Dell reps I have spoken to, our TV is made by Sharp. (LCDs made by Sharp, Plasmas are made by Samsung) Assuming the reps know what they are talking about.
As for your HDMI problem, see my post below for what I have done to get around this problem. Funny thing is, it hasn't happened at all in the last couple of weeks.

dsaintmb 2006-03-24, 08:37 PM Hey panther,
Yea mine has been stable for the last couple of weeks as well.
Until this morning that is when I also hooked up a firewire cable.
Everything was recording good with SD digital. I could switch from HDMI 1(DCT) to HDMI 2(PC) with no issues. I then tried capturing PBSHD to experiment. When I switched back to DCT I got the green screen of death.
So I unpluged firewire and restored the DCT defaults(shakes hands with t.v.). Everthing is stable again.
Think I'll leave the vid capture alone until next firmware upgrade to be safe. I have to get a analog tuner anyways so I can control DCT through MCE.
There is the relevant DCT info for this thread. But on a W3201C note;)
Your input changing method also works if you are having a zoom/overscan issue via HDMI. Just keep t.v. in zoom switch from say HDMI 1 to VGA and back again.
As you know the Dell instruction manual is pretty poor. So if you don't know:
Instructions - "Wide Mode - Best selection for viewing digital HDTV, 16:9 and 22:9 DVD movies."
Reality - Wide Mode - NON-linear stretch of SD 4:3 signals where it leaves center intact, stretches the edges and slightly crops the top/bottom. This mode also shows proper proportions when viewing 720p or 1080i.

Bobbyd 2006-03-26, 10:48 AM TiVo has come out with a Wireless LAN adapter for its new units. I would like to connect my DCT6412 (1.1 USB port) to my Netgear wireless lan. Anyone know of a USB LAN adapter that I can use to see my 6412 and its files on my wireless lan? Any suggestions in this area.
dsaintmb 2006-03-26, 04:16 PM USB ports on the 6412 have not been enabled by my cable provider. I think this is true for all cabel providers in North America but am not 100% sure. DCT Goddess? Are you renting your 6412? If they were active I would swap with cable provider for a 6412 Phase III anyhow beacuse they have USB 2.0
Camvan 2006-03-30, 03:56 AM I wish the 6412 had an undelete button.
Was finishing the 9:00 PM 24 Show tonight, selected restart from beginning - the box paused, I pressed the button again on the remote and it went to delete and deleted it.
My wife is annoyed. :)

I'm renting from Comcast. No, the USB ports are not active for data, but you can plug USB powered devices like lights & fans into them.
LD500 2006-04-03, 05:28 PM Does anyone else run into this?
Quite often if I fast forward or rewind on my 6412 Phase III
the sound will disappear when I re-enter the play mode.
I need to press stop and then resume to reactivate the sound.
There is also some bug related to the way it allocates the two tuners.
I haven't quite figured it out yet. Basically the 6412 sometimes thinks
that both tuners are occupied recording but I am only recording 1 show.
Does anyone run into that one?
dsaintmb 2006-04-04, 01:31 PM If volume on your 6412 is locked, unlock it. Sometimes you can get volume back simply by hitting mute twice. Does not always work and sometimes you have to ues your method but still hitting mute is less annoying.
Your tuner issue I suspect is from taping show that runs long ie Lost runs minute longer usualy. So say invasion is after lost any you want to tape two shows in this time slot. Undo invasion recording, set up other recording, than set up invasion again.
LD500 2006-04-06, 02:14 AM According to my wife, our 6412 guide listings have been blank all day today.
All the cells are filled with the standard filler message, can't remember what it says. Anyone else with the same problem?

To Be Announced. All day. Unplug wait a couple of seconds and replug. After 15 min. you should see something different. It's happened to me. One of the good things about the DCTs is the guide IMO.

After unplugging and plugging the 6412 the guide started loading again.
The latest firmware seems to be causing more bugs than before but I have to admit the last batch of bugs was more intrusive.
