: Shaw DCT6412 Information / Questions / Problems
nick182 2005-11-18, 11:05 PM Hi there,
I've had the PH III 6412 for a couple months now. It's been working great but recently I've had choppy recorded HD programs. At first I thought the signal was bad for a program but it's now happened on a few other HD recorded programs. Different channels as well. Can this be a hard drive problem or just it's been a fluke? Not all the programs that I've recorded have been bad. It seemed like it was a string of them and now stopped. Any thoughts?

I've noticed this on a couple of my 6412 HD recordings as well, most recently on a recording of "Meet the Fockers" on MCHD. About halfway through the movie, the video appeared choppy, almost like it was running in 3/4 speed or strobo or something. The odd thing is that when I watched it a couple of days later, the entire recording was fine. It appears to be some random memory problem becasue obviously the original recording was fine. Note that my hard disk was only about 50% full during recording and playback.
LD500 2005-11-23, 01:24 PM Yesterday I turned on my TV to the hockey game and the picture was crazy.
The best way to describe it is 80% of the picture was composed of large multicolored pixels. 20% of the picture was normal but the normal parts were scattered all over. This was on our Phase III 6412 with HDMI connection.
I flipped to various stations, analog too, and they were all the same. They all had different levels of multi-coloured pixels, mostly green.
On other other television, just analog signal (no Shaw box), the picture was fine.
I tried shutting the unit off then back on but same problem.
I then pulled the plug on the 6412, waited 15 seconds, and plugged it back in.
The picture came back normally on all channels.
Has anyone else run into this? It's the first time I had this problem.
davvos 2005-12-08, 05:24 PM Looking for help setting up new HDTV – have ordered Toshiba 52HMX85 DLP tv, a Sony DAV-FX100W DVD/speaker system and a Shaw PVR (believe this is the Motorola 6400 phase III model – 6412?). Based on my limited knowledge, I was going to do the following to have option of using either the tv speakers or the Sony system …
Connect Shaw PVR to Toshiba using one of the available HDMI connections
Connect the Sony system to second HDMI on the Toshiba
To use the Sony speakers, can I connect the Shaw PVR to the Sony using the optical/ coax connection?
Would this work? If not, what will?
thanks
magnet 2005-12-08, 05:27 PM Better to use component video to TV, and Optical to Stereo.
HDMI outputs only 2.0 stereo instead of 5.1 during playback of PVR recordings that have 5.1.

Yes, it happened to me about 3 weeks ago. I called Shaw and they just re-booted the box. I have been having lock up problems once a week or so since then.
ACE123 2005-12-23, 03:45 PM Hi!
Sorry if this has been posted before, but I looked and couldn't find anything. Is there a way to program the "Enter" key int he v.2 remotes? I currently have to enter 011 to go to channel 11. With my 2500, I can do 11 "Enter key".
Thanks in advance,
Cheers.
mufc99 2005-12-23, 05:41 PM Never in my whole life have I paid so much for a piece of electronic equipment that quite frankly is a piece of garbage.Maybe these 6412's are the bees knees to someone who has never had a DVD recorder before but I have had a Pioneer dvd recorder for over a year that has never let me down once. Now I am on yet another service call to get my 3rd box in less than a month.I have to record everything twice {both recorders} because I cannot rely on the Shaw box.Yes I know it is a Motorolla box but Shaw are the ones selling them at outrageous prices. All I ask for is a Dvd recorder that decodes and records HD and works. Is that too much to ask for at $750. Pretty close to demanding my money back and moving to Bell Expressvue but they probably are not much better. Great technology when it works ,very frustrating when it doesn't.Cannot list everything that has gone wrong with the 6412 because Xmas will be over and I will have missed it.
Merry Xmas everyone.
753951 2005-12-23, 08:25 PM Actually, as a new Shaw HD subscriber, I'd really like if you can list all the problems. In less than 3 days I already encountered one (when recording two programs at the same time, afterward I couldn't play one of them - only delete it).
idearat 2005-12-23, 09:57 PM mufc99, posts like yours have me very worried about moving to the 6412. I use my DVD recorder (Toshiba) for 95% of my tv watching, and it's been absolutely reliable and a pleasure to use. Most of what I've heard about the 6412 leads me to expect that it'll be a giant step back in both reliability and functionality. There are plusses, of course: 2 tuners, HD, integrated with the program guide; but if recordings regularly fail, or the skip / skip back / fast fwd etc. aren't at least close to what I have with the Tosh, I'll be very annoyed.
mufc99 2005-12-23, 10:13 PM Recordings i made that would not let me watch, only gave me option to delete
one soccer program i had recorded from the beginning and clearly showed up as having been fully recorded but would only let me watch the last 15 minutes
some programs will not let me chase play them at all, others work fine,
this box makes an annoying humming sound constantly, other 6412 box did not
recordings that have what looks like scratches all through them
phantom recordings from 1989
All unaccepable when my other pvr like a said previously worked like a swiss watch
Grimgrak 2005-12-26, 02:42 PM Those of you that traded in your p2 6412 box for a p3 m4. How did you do it? Did they require a tech to come to your house to swap it? Or were you able to swap it at a store? I wanted to do a store swap but they told me that was against policy....
BlueSkyzz 2005-12-26, 03:24 PM You should be able to do it any Shaw retail outlet.
Or just call Shaw and complain of a poor analog picture.
mufc99 2005-12-27, 11:10 AM I have Shaw coming to my house tomorrow to give me my 3rd 6412 Phase 3 box and had read somewhere something about getting a box with serial number starting with m4.Cannot find the thread and cannot remember why m4 is suposed to be better. Can someone enlighten me please?

How many of you can hear your 6412 Phase 3 box hum ?
Hard drive obviously making the noise
753951 2005-12-27, 02:47 PM I have one with M4 serial. It hums when it's off (not a HDD but rather a cooling fan). And when it's on HDD is chirping. By far the noisiest component in my house (on or off).
beanagee1 2006-01-01, 04:36 PM I just had had a re-set while I was trying to setup a series recording. Is this unusal?
I have also been getting a sort of shooting star like bad pixels that run across the screen every few minutes or so (very quick) on recorded and live programs. Is this an issue with my unit (now on my 4th 6412!) or there something up with Shaw network and HD?
frostychocolatemilkshakes 2006-01-02, 02:15 AM Sorry if this is an old question but I can't find the answer anywhere. Do the new Shaw DCT6412's have HDMI output? I really want to use this connection to hook up my LCD TV to my DCT. Thanks
Roreman 2006-01-02, 03:30 AM Frosty, yes, the Phase 3 6412 has hdmi.
CalgaryCowboy 2006-01-05, 04:03 PM When I bought my box last week the salesman told me not to use HDMI and not bother buying the cable because there was bug in the firmware that make it look "boxy" and just use component. Claimed they talked to shaw and tracked it down to the software. Anybody aware of this or if it is fixed now?

Hard drive obviously making the noise
Our first 6412-III box made a loud clicking noise about every two seconds, regardless of whether it was on or "off". It sounded like a hard drive problem.
I talked to Shaw. They had someone out within 24 hours (on December 24 afternoon no less). They did an immediate replacement of the 6412. Now I can hardly hear it with my ear pressed against it.
