: Shaw DCT6412 Information / Questions / Problems
LD500 2005-07-06, 04:23 PM Life has been busy raising a child. I don't get to check in here too often anymore.
After scanning through this forum, I didn't notice any updates.
Has Shaw still not fixed the problem with the blank screen on the 6412?
That's the one that is temporarily fixed by unplugging or watching a pre-recorded program under the LIST.
I can't believe it. I can see some casual users totally stumped by that problem and Shaw hasn't come out with a fix for a few months now?
technut 2005-07-06, 04:49 PM To my knowledge, Shaw has not issued a single firmware update since the release of the 6412. So no fixes yet.
bogentu 2005-07-08, 10:49 AM I am confused about the various series recording options: "first run", "first run + repeat" and "all episodes". Does "first run" record an episode that's marked as "New" in the guide or does it record it if its the first time its seen it? So if a series is being run again in syndication, say something like Get Smart which has been on a zillion times before, will first run record it?
And what is the difference between "first run + repeat" and "all episodes"?
retry 2005-07-10, 05:51 PM Does anyone know if Shaw has a master database of MAC addresses for HD receivers that they have sold to FS, London Drugs, A&B Sound, etc? I'm wondering what Shaw checks when you give them the 3 numbers on the bottom of the DCT6412 -- as long as it's not a stolen unit, if I buy one off ebay or a buy and sell listing, I shouldn't have any trouble getting the box registered, right?
6412hater 2005-07-13, 03:03 PM Hi, I'm on my third 6412 in 2 1/2 months. The first one I bought wouldn't keep the program guide in its memory, it just kept reseting on its own every few minutes. The second one lasted a couple months, then dumped its guide memory and everything I had saved on the hard drive one night while I was watching a show I had recorded. Now my third one, which I have only had a week, just did the same thing. I had a bunch of stuff recorded that I was going to watch, and while I was watching a recorded movie the piece of crap just puked again and all is lost. I should have know better than to buy something made by Motorola, they can't build reliable cell phones either!!!
I guess no one else has had this problem? Although my third one does this also. The only way around it is to reset the unit, and sometimes it takes more that one reset to actually get your recordings back.
Anyone want to buy a 6412 (cheap).
Shaggy 2005-07-13, 04:57 PM I am confused about the various series recording options: "first run", "first run + repeat" and "all episodes". Does "first run" record an episode that's marked as "New" in the guide or does it record it if its the first time its seen it? So if a series is being run again in syndication, say something like Get Smart which has been on a zillion times before, will first run record it?
And what is the difference between "first run + repeat" and "all episodes"?
1. Yes, first run records an episode marked as new in the guide. If it is shown more than one time, it records it more than one time (ie, Daily show will record like 5 times because it's aired as new multiple times per day)
2. I'm pretty sure syndication shows are not new, so the first run won't get them. But there aren't any new ones coming out, so you should set for all episodes for syndication shows.
3. I don't know the diff between "first run + repeat" and "all episodes". It's a good question.
trevinski 2005-07-13, 07:06 PM I believe 'First Run and Repeat' will record exactly that but it will not record multiple episodes of the same show. So if you have 'The Soup Nazi' already recorded it will not record it again as long as oyu leave it on your hard drive. If you set it to 'All Episodes' it will record all episodes regardless.
Uwish 2005-07-22, 05:26 PM Is it me or have others noticed in the last week or so the unit has reset on two seperate occassions. I have not checked to see if there was a new firmware push or anything. just wondering if anyone else noticed, in SA, the resets were around noonish.
ianseph 2005-07-22, 06:02 PM Happened the other early evening in Victoria.
Had hoped it was Fox finally arriving, but no.
Not aware of reason for the reset.
Can't see any apparent difference.
technut 2005-07-23, 12:59 AM No new code levels here in Victoria... no updates since the day I bought the 6412, ages ago. I guess Shaw is busy with other !@#$% and not bothering with updates.
egore 2005-07-23, 06:27 PM How many firmware updates have Comcast users received so far? Considering how much these PVRs cost you would think Shaw would have more support for them.
JesseJ 2005-07-23, 06:56 PM None. Motorola has not released the second version yet.
DCTGoddess 2005-07-23, 08:50 PM So, what version is everyone on w/ Shaw? Comcast around Boston is 9.15. Some around the states, are varied, 9.13 to 9.19. 9.19 is meant to correct the freezing issue, I believe.
technut 2005-07-23, 10:28 PM (Comcast) DCT6412:
i-Guide: 49.13, S/W: 71.44 - 1203, F/W: 09.15, Bootloader: 04.41
My Shaw DCT6412:
i-Guide: 43.16, S/W: 71.44 - 1203, F/W: 09.12, Bootloader: 04.01
I suppose newer DCT shipments from Motorola to Shaw may have more recent F/W and Bootloader code, but my older 6412 has never been updated by Shaw beyond what it originally came with (ie. no bug fixes at all yet).
beanagee1 2005-08-08, 12:55 PM I had my box reset about a week ago due to freezing. I could watch any live shows but I could not watch anything recorded. During the reset, a "phantom" recording was introduced. When I tried to delete the phantom recording it caused another freeze. This unit had to have a hard re-boot last night to get it going (the process that involved turning the power off, going into the diagnotic menu and then going through a series of buttons to format the hard drive). So far so good.
I was told that a software patch to fix some of these problems is expected shortly (a firmware??).
DCTGoddess 2005-08-09, 05:58 PM So, what version is everyone on w/ Shaw? Comcast around Boston is 9.15. Some around the states, are varied, 9.13 to 9.19. 9.19 is meant to correct the freezing issue, I believe.
Quoting myself. :D Update: less than 2 weeks ago, I was updated from 9.15 to 9.19, w/ no changes to the bootloader or S/W
retry 2005-08-11, 04:02 AM I bought a sealed, "new in box" DCT6412/2000 off ebay and had it activated by Shaw in Vancouver a few days ago: S/W 71.44-1203, Firmware 09.12.
I'm not sure how to check the bootloader version. Is there some sort of hidden menu for this? Also, after seeing the info posted in other users' sigs, I looked around for a menu listing the i-guide version and couldn't find one; Could it be that this box doesn't use the i-guide software?

Napial 2005-08-11, 03:42 PM I received the following e-mail from Motorola today:
"HDMI has been in development and was scheduled to available to the DCT6412 set-top-boxes in the second quarter of this year. Please contact your cable provider to determine if they have these units available.
If you need further assistance with this issue, please reply to this email or contact us by phone at 1-877-466-8646. Thank you for choosing Motorola and have a nice day."
I called Shaw technical support, and they do NOT have HDMI output units as of yet. Has anyone seen/heard of a DCT6412 with HDMI rather than DVI outputs. I really do not want to buy DVI output if HDMI is about to be available.
painter 2005-08-11, 11:14 PM They have been using the DCT 6412 phase 3 with HDMI output for about 2 or 3 months on Comcast cable in the states, but when it will come to Canada is anybodys guess.
Sgt_Strider 2005-08-18, 10:51 PM How much is Shaw currently selling the DCT6412?
