: Shaw DCT6412 Information / Questions / Problems
technut 2005-03-28, 12:40 AM When I turn on the Cable button and then turn on the Tv button I only get the memu bar showing on the screen, no picture or sound.
However, when I press Menu and going into PVR recorded shows, my
recorded shows shows up and display and then when I press stop
my regular channels show up with Picture and sound...This problem (no picture) has been mentioned a few times before in this thread. The temporary fix is to pull the power plug on the box for a minute and then plug it back in. It will work properly after that and you don't lose any settings, but it will take a few hours to download all the guide data again.
Another solution is to always leave the 6412 on. It only seems to happen to users who power the 6412 off.
A more permanent fix will hopefully be available in a future software/firmware update.
Tech questions 2005-03-28, 05:56 PM Hi Technut, I pulled the plug and viola its all working now..
Thanks..!
P.S. Staff at Shaw had no clue what to do.
Tech questions 2005-03-28, 06:09 PM Just wanted to know if anyone uses this outlet?
If so, for what?
Thanks,
technut 2005-03-28, 11:16 PM The USB port is not used for anything at this time, though we can always hope it might be enabled in future.
But I've confirmed it is powered, so you can plug a USB LED light into it (eg. here (http://www.radioshack.ca/estore/Product.aspx?product=2608068) and here (http://www.radioshack.ca/estore/Product.aspx?product=2616463)) to illuminate your other components, or even something like this (http://www.radioshack.ca/estore/Product.aspx?product=6313200). ;)
Tech questions 2005-03-29, 12:13 AM Thanks Technut for the USB information...
Next question: Does anyone know if shaw on demand is working for 6412 digital terminals yet or if its coming soon..?
Also, just to let those that didn't know...
The other day I ordered a Pay per view movie late at night called "Ray".
and programmed it to record on PVR...I was going to watch it the next day.
However, when I was ready to watch there wasn't anything recorded.
Just on PVR setting, it said Ray, I pressed play and the screen was blank.
I check with shaw and they said, I was charged for the movie". I said, I didn't even watch it, nothing was on screen..They said, you can't record
Pay per view items, if you do it will not record...
Not good, however I do understand copyright info...But I not copying it, simply placing on 6412 harddrive...Anyone else run into this?
Oh, don't forget my first questions about shaw on demand.
Just as an FYI, some people have plugged a USB keyboard into the SA STBs and use it to change channels at the STB... For example:

JesseJ 2005-03-29, 02:27 AM My USB Keyboard doen't do anything. No lights, nothing at all on the input.

I gather from this you set it and left it until the next day. I think you'll find that you need to be present just after the movie starts. A message comes up on the screen that you need to "accept". I suspect the messge would stay there indefinitely, or maybe an assumption is made that you no longer want the movie and it cancels.
If you click to accept, I believe you'll find that the movie records just fine. You can be a little late, since the early part of the movie will still be in the buffer. Worked fine for me tonight. However, it wouldn't have if I hadn't entered the room about a half hour after it started and noticed the message on the screen.
I understand PPV can be recorded, but not SOD.

Bluecruzer 2005-03-29, 07:18 AM If that's correct, and it was waiting for confirmation (that never came), why would there still be a charge for the VOD?

Maybe some confusion here. I was referring to PPV, not VOD or SOD.
On Demand cannot be recorded as I understand it. Since it's currently ordered by computer in the Vancouver area, I don't think there would be any "accept/confirmation" appearing on the TV screen.

Uwish 2005-03-29, 11:50 AM I have successfully recored several programs from PPV. BUT, you need to select the move accept the charge, then manually set the recording. You can not set it to record a PPV movie at a later date automatically. This is because you need to confirm the purchace of the movie.

My Bad - meant PPV...
Uwish has cleared this up however... you can record it but you gotta be there to set it manually.
vango44 2005-03-31, 12:30 AM Another reason you can't record SOD with the 6xxx boxes is that they're NOT compatible with the On-Demand network. :(
bogentu 2005-03-31, 01:23 PM I noticed some strange behaviour on my 6412 last nite. Was watching live tv and during the commercials i would swap to the other tuner to listen to one of the music channels. When a song changes on the music channel, it automagically displays the info screen with the name of the song. But when I swapped back to the tv show, I started seeing the info screen popping up every couple of minutes by itself (with the tv show info). It looks like when the other tuner brings up its info, the info menu on the tuner also appears.
Shaggy 2005-03-31, 01:59 PM That's a good one bogentu. I've also noticed that if I leave it on a music channel and then shut off my DCT, after a few minutes the digital output starts pumping out the music again even though my DCT is off. Because I always leave my stereo powered on, I end up hearing the music.
Alan Bealby 2005-03-31, 06:54 PM I've also noticed that if I leave it on a music channel and then shut off my DCT, after a few minutes the digital output starts pumping out the music again even though my DCT is off.
That's the way the DCT2000 works also. Quite a bit of the circuitry is left on when the box is "powered down" and that includes the sound circuitry. I know that to continuously get the IPG information that a lot of the circuitry has to be on but I thought that there is no reason that sound should be output when powered down. Apparently there is if the DCT6412 also has this behaviour.
technut 2005-04-01, 04:18 PM Comcast Cable in the US has virtually the same 6412 configuration as Shaw and they have issued a manual for their users which also applies well to our DVRs.
You can download it here:
Comcast 6412 DVR Manual (http://www.comcast.com/MediaLibraryRoot/CM/VanityURL/documents/A23_MO_Dual_DVR_Guide_4469a.pdf) (PDF, 3.8 MB)
Pages 11 & 12 have the best explanation I've seen yet of how the 6412 handles scheduled recording conflicts.
Skidz 2005-04-03, 05:53 PM I own a 6412 and ive had this for about 2 months now and i just realized that the #7 isnt programmed into the remote  could someone please point me in the right direction for a fix or do i just reprogram the remote and then add all the other stuff back into it(e.g 30 sec skip, amp volume, ect )? Thank-You
technut 2005-04-03, 11:14 PM i just realized that the #7 isnt programmed into the remoteI believe that happens when you are programming the Skip button and enter leading zeros "00173" instead of just "173". The misinformation comes from instructions for Comcast users, who have a different remote than Shaw users.
For Shaw users, see this post:
http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showpost.php?p=148264&postcount=7
Which is also where you'll find this fix:
To undo a change and remap a button back to its original function, follow these steps:
1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice.
4) Press whatever button you want to restore, then press it again (ie. press twice).
Skidz 2005-04-04, 12:41 AM Technut ,Your the man :D thx for fixing my problem yet again , your unplug technique worked wonders on my previous query also. Many thanks
