I'm wondering who's using the DVI out?
I'm thinking about getting a DVI cable, and what are your impressions?
Both on HD and SD/Analog. Thanks.
Edit: I find almost no difference between cable into the TV, and component to the TV (set to 480p....saw no difference between 480i and p, so just set it to p) Also, I have set the box to 1080i, and not 720p, as for some strange reason, the 720p was producing horrible SD PQ, while on the 1080i setting, it seems to be okay.

I tried ordering VOD to no avail. The order says my DCT isn't enabled...weird.

Also, I know this has been mentioned before, but I think it's funny that you can set a reminder for mon-fri, but not a recording....and that all important sat-sun recording as well....hope this will be adjutsted on future firmware updates.

Check out: Menu (press twice) -> DVR -> Set a recording.

Choose a start time, end time, and date. Select a channel, then look for "Recording Options" and "Repeat Recording". I think you'll find the opportunity to make the selections you want.

If you do a search for "DVI', I believe you'll find there has been lots of discussion on how good it is or isn't (with regard to analog vs. digital channels and type of TV), including suggestions on how to purchase the cable at a reasonable price.

Mesh, you found it!! Thank you! I never got far enough down the manual-setting road to discover that! I always got discouraged when I saw that you could only pick a single date, which is where I was expecting to find any options for repeat recording.

If you follow Meshmellow's instructions you get to a screen that lets you add 'Recording Options' and under those options are 'Repeat Recording' with the choices of: None; Every day; Once a week; MON-FRI.

Thanks again Mesh!

The other cool thing about this is that you can set a recording for something way beyond the i-Guide, which is convenient if you're going to be off on vacation.

I'm suprised that you don't get much better PQ using your TV's tuner when compared to component from the 6412. It stands to reason that using composite wouldn't help because the analog signal is digitized within the box to be recorded; but feeding analog directly into the TV should produce better results. Maybe you lose as much from splitting the cable as you do from the recording process...

I'm also suprised that 480p looks decent - I'd expect motion suffer quite a bit.

I run DVI to my Hitachi and haven't noticed much difference from the component inputs. On most correctly calibrated sets I doubt you would notice much of a difference.

what do you guys set your 4:3 override to on your 6412???

It may be because my line is split so much...I have a splitter into the house, then to the upstairs TV, then that line comes to the basement, and is split 3 times, 1 to the cable box, 1 to the cable modem, then 1 to another splitter, which goes into the TV, receiver for cable FM, and an extra for a VCR (which I don't have). I also have a line booster installed by Shaw. I have no troubles with PQ/SQ on any od the HD or Digital channels...Analog is good.

Watching Rides (TLC) last night, I found *almost* no difference between 480p compo and cable into the TV. There was a slight artification, but that's to be expected. I find the timeshifts more watchable as compared to my old 2000 box. MC has always looked good. I do expreience audio dropouts, but I don't think this is my line's fault, just because of all the instances I read on the forums. It sounds more like a headend problem.

Demon_96, I'm using 480p as my override. I found no difference between 480i and 480p. I havent watched much SD sports, so we'll see if there is a difference when there are movements on the screen.

Further to the problem of FF and REW on the Star!TV channel. As I posted, I have problems specifically with four of Shaw's digital channels when recording and playing back on the 6208. Last fall when I recognized the problem, I checked by recording 10 minutes of all channels I was getting at the time and found that Star!TV (65), Sportsnet West (71), Sportsnet Ontario (72) and Sportsnet East (73) had the same problems.

When I made a recording from one of these channels and started playback and tried to go to FF2 speed the window came up asking whether to Delete or Keep the recording. This is the same message as when the end of the recording is reached. I could select Keep the recording and then play it or FF at FF1 speed but would go through the same cycle of asking if I wanted to Delete or Keep the recording immediatley I tried to bump the FF speed up beyond FF1. Trying to REW would cause the display to flash the rE1 message then it would immediately return to the PLAY mode. I couldn't get to rewind at all ao these channels.

In your osting you say the 6412 has the same or a similar problem. Can you confirm that for the Star!TV channel? Do you get the digital Sportsnet channels and, if so, do you experience the same problem with them.

Alan,

I don't have exactly the same problems with my 6412, but the channels you list do behave strangely when recorded. When I ff, I seem to get a series of stills, and the only one that seems to get me anywhere is the ff5. If I use ff2 it actually goes slower than playing the clip itself, although it's difficult to make out what's going on because the still images seem to be far apart, so I don't get a contiguous video. Rewinding is similar, and the status bar will all of a sudden jump every 60 seconds along. The 30-second skip function works fine though, although the status bar only moves on every second skip (i.e. every 60 seconds).

I do not get the popup window asking me if I want to delete or the rE1 message.

Incidently, if I transfer these files to my pc via firewire, they ff and rew fine, but I do get the blockiness at startup that technut mentioned. Seems to be something encoded in the data stream.

Mesh/Technut - Pressing menu twice doesn't work for me. It gets me to the same main menu screen that I get by pressing guide.
I get to DVR - set a recording - by using the guide but I get to the recording options Start, End, Day, and when I confirm a recording it doesn't give me any other options or show on the future recordings screen.
Is this a problem for Shaw or is there a work around that I can do?

Could someone with a DCT-6412 confirm either way whether this box is compatible with Shaw-On-Demand. I was surprised when I discovered I can't order SOD movies for my 6208 and am wondering whether this has been addressed with the new model.
Thanks!

Called Shaw and they reset the box, showed 0 at he left hand side for over an hour. Called back they had me hold the menu and select buttons on the STB and unplug and replug the STB. Screen showed Boob, (the far end of the b was not showing), for over an hour. Shaw had said that the "Boob" would eventually show the "0" and then to call them and they would reset. No change after an hour so called back. They tried to reset without success. Asked if I had a splitter, said yes , and they asked that I connect the cable from the wall directly to the STB. I couldnn't do that as the cable is not long enough. They scheduled a service call for Sunday and left an inoperable box. I unplugged and replugged and had most of the functions restored but can only input one number when wanting to change channels.

Screen showed Boob...
This indicates that you've been spending too much time on the porno channels. It's a safety measure, to prevent customers from going blind.

It's still a no go. It's been a long time and were all still waiting.

I bought a DVI cable for ~$40 (10 feet/3m)...not bad, but I want to set the output to 1080i, not the 720p it's set on right now. But....I must wait until my recoding ends at 7. I'll let you know then. Right now it's not bad, but I detect a slight bit more MB'ing...analog and digital look about the same. (the NBA game is pretty crappy compared to TNT...Sun looks like a$$)
We shall see when I can get the box outputting what I like it in.

Can you have multiple audio outputs connected at the same time? Right now I have my two channel 'L and R' audio hooked up directly to my TV. Yesterday I got more adventerous and hooked up the optical audio to my reciever. Do I need to do anything else to get surround sound (when offered) or will is detect the signal automatically? I was playing around with the audio set up in the guide but it didn't seem to do anything. Dispite all my efforts I could get no audio to run through my reciever / speakers, not even the two channel front?

any ideas?

Do you get the digital Sportsnet channels and, if so, do you experience the same problem with them.I don't get the Sportsnet channels but on Star!TV any REW or FF speeds only work for a second or two at most and then they just jump to the start or end of the buffer/recording. The only exception is Slow Forward, which does appear to work.
