Although it's not a concert DVD, I just picked up Peter Gabriel - Play. What a disc! It's presented in DTS 96/24, full surround. And what a surround presentation this is!

Metallica's "S & M"
2 disc concert DVD

Its from a live performance in 2000 with the entire San Francisco Symphony backing them up.

Before I actually saw it, I said "you have got to be kidding" to myself, but I have to admit that I was totally blown away.

Certainly one for the "And now for something completely different" category.

This is the new best of the best for sound and video in concerts imho.
Top notch content, talent and alot more fun to watch than hell freezes over. there is a four piece horn section that adds a ton of depth to an already amazing band, shot in 16X9 widescreen....loves it! oh, and its 3 hours long to boot!!!

Also picked up Phil Collins, live in Paris, another farewell tour! this is much better sound (DTS) and picture(16X9) than live and loose.

George Thouroughgood and the Destroyers...wicked picking and sliding, band is tighter than ever (most likely due to not being drugged and boozed out of their gords 24/7), pretty descent sound and PQ. hate the video footage between songs though.

The Tragically Hip - that night in Toronto (DVD 16:9 anamorphic widescreen and DD5.1)

All I can say I WOW. I actually stood up a few time and clapped, woohooed, and yeahed.

Audio 5/5
This sounded great. Every instrument was razor sharp, bass was deep, and Gordon Downeys voice was crystal clear and sounded excellent. Never have I been so immersed by the audio while watching a live concert DVD.

Video 5/5

Again, like the audio, the video here is top notch. Shown in full anamorphic widescreen the transfer is crystal clear and looks almost HD. The style of filming is so immersive and gives the impression of actually being there. The only thing I could have done without were the split screen shots, but even they werent overdone or lasted to long.

Anyone who is even a casual Hip fan needs to get this DVD asap. I highly recomend this to anyone who wants to get a real good look at a really good Canadian band.

I almost bought the Tragically hip pack at walmart the other night. It was 49.99 so that turned me off. I think I might have to pick it up after reading your review. I am a big hop fan...mostly the older stuff...saw them 5 times in Halifax. Liked them since I was like 14.

I just got a hold of Coldplay at Glastonbury (PAL DVD)...hard to get to NTSC lol...but I did it. It may be the best looking DVD i have ever seen. I play it in my suv on the 7 inch screen on my Pioneer 5600. I thought it was becasue the screen was so small that it looked so good but it still looks good on my HT. One of their better set lists to. Only concert I could find where they play some X&Y stuff. If anyone can get this dvd I recommend it immensely.

Eagles Farewell 1 Tour
This is the new best of the best for sound and video in concerts imho.

MY comment on this to a fellow Worker is that The Sound was so good as to almost
sound unnatural and too crisp lacking the natural harmonics that you would expect to hear from a live performance. But it is deffinately a pristeen sound track virtually flawless, and the video is spectacularly crisp, upconverted it looks stunning.

Picked up the McCartney in red square to reciently, have to admitt we are enjoying it as well.

I bought the Hip set tonight. Still rings up as $44.99 at FS. I'd be surprised if this collection doesn't win a Grammy.

The audio remastering on the CD's is 'night and day' over the original releases.

PQ on the DVD is excellent.

My favorite one by far is:

Peter Gabriel/ Secret World.

After that in no particular order:

Joni Mitchel / Shadows and Light
Triumph / Live
Peter Gabriel / Play
Standing in the shadows of motown
Cale 54
Def leppard in the round in your face

I have a few more but those are the ones I like the best.

Anyone who like Coldplay shoudl pick up there Concert in Glastonbury on dvd back in June 2005. Really great mix and PQ. I obtained the PAL version so I had to rip it to switch it to NTSC but was worth it. One of the best PQ's I have seen on a dvd...along with Tragically Hip,

I have the Eagles - Hell freezes Over and Queen "live at Wembley Stadium"

The Eagles DVD is superb all around...the Queen DVD is all original basically..so it's 2 channel and the video isn't amazing, but it's a concert I wish I was alive to go to!!!

Re. the new Hip DVD:
Lastly, and most importantly, is Gord's 'ranting.' I enjoy a good Gord 'rant' as much as anybody, but does he have to talk over every guitar solo ??? Over most every instrumental break?? I think Gordo should perhaps consider limiting the ranting a bit - so as to allow the audience to actually be able to hear the musical interaction going on behind him during parts of the songs where in the original versions there was no singing. I WANT to hear Baker's licks at the end of 'Grace Too,' or at the end of 'Three Pistols' and I want to hear Langlois' super cool riffing on the coda to 'Nautical Disaster,' but it is difficult to do so when you have to try to listen to it through Downie's non-stop blabbering about God knows what and who cares anyway.Well, that's a "deal-killer". Too bad.

Gordon Downie is what makes the Hip the Hip. Without Downie's bizarre on stage antics the Hip would be a rather dull band live. To say what this says IMO is absurd, and to not get this concert because of it, is even more absurd.

Who ever wrote that piece is clearly not a hip fan, or just doesnt understand why the hip are what they are.

I second Biglyle's comments. I have seen the hip at least 5 times. Every show was different except for one thing. Gord. He brings life to the show. The hip are not hip without him. The band is amazing dont get me wrong but his onstage personna is what makes the hip great to see live. I still can't believe this DVD was only 10.99 at Futureshop. It certainly is the best production i have ever put through my dvd player. I picked up Audioslave "Live in Cuba" on the weekend as well. Not up to the hips production but neat to see the first US band to ever play Cuba. It was a free concert for 60,000 fans. Chris Cornell is a great singer but he seemed lifeless on stage. Just my opinion.
