The Beast... something I plucked out of the bargain bin at Walmart a few months ago. Takes place in Afghanistan, circa 1980, during the Russian invasion. A rag-tag band of Mujahedeen duke it out in the desert with a wayward tank crew struggling back to base. Very good movie.

Time flies, doesn't it?
We both bought that DVD last April!
I gave it to a friend to watch and he still hasn't seen it.
Maybe I'll get it back, watch it, and try him again.
one of my favourites.
BradF 2005-02-17, 02:47 PM Geez Harmer, was it that long ago? Time flies -- is right.
Actually, I was a bit chagrined to discover, too late, that I'd bought the full-screen only edition, so I was never in any hurry to watch it. Looks okay that way, but I want to just gift this one to a relative and order up the widescreen version someday.
johnp'in'bc 2005-02-17, 04:32 PM The Crying Game -- new dvd release (Lions Gate 'Collector's Edition' 16530E) of 1992 movie. Good acting and transfer, and a very entertaining view. Written and directed by Neil Jordan (he won an Oscar for the writing), and stars Stephen Rea and Miranda Richardson as IRA terrorists, Forest Whitaker as their hostage, and Jaye Davidson as Whitaker's girlfriend. Begins like a movie about the IRA, but quickly becomes so much more (to say the least!!). Cheers!
bembol 2005-02-17, 10:44 PM SAW I remember seeing the trailer and made me sick to my stomach, love the twist. I picked up the DVD. My little brother is watching it and sweating, freaking out. :D
eljay 2005-02-18, 07:50 AM I'm really curious to see Saw. (Sorry 'bout that.) I don't expect great film-making, but I'm hoping it'll be reasonably suspenseful and appropriately gory.
JohnnyG 2005-02-18, 09:49 AM A girl I'm dating wanted to watch this on Valentine's day! Since I had never heard of it before, I thought it was going to be your typical slasher movie, but boy! Was I wrong! Put a couple of Hollywood A listers in the cast and it would have been a real hit. I found it very reminiscent of Se7en.
eljay 2005-02-18, 09:59 AM A girl I'm dating wanted to watch this on Valentine's day!Really? Cool. I'm pretty sure...no, I'm 100% certain my wife won't be watching Saw with me.
I found it very reminiscent of Se7en.That is an excellent endorsement! Maybe this weekend...
JohnnyG 2005-02-18, 10:09 AM Her logic was "blood is red"! I guess this is the result when one is raised on a farm with 3 brothers :)

I would call Saw a hit. The film had a very low budget was produced for only around 1.5 Million. Saw did the rounds at many film festivals. Lions Gate Films picked it up the film and did a very good job selling it by targeting horror audiences. The film opened up to 18 million dollars and ended up grossing a bit more than 55 million dollars at the box office. Lions Gate paid a fee to the production company that made Saw to distribute it. Everyone involved in the production has made a tidy profit on this little film. Now a sequel is being rushed into production and will open up this October just in time to capitalize on Halloween.
I liked Saw although the movie had it's problems. I don't consider Saw of the same calibre as Seven which is a classic of the genre.

They also filmed it in 18 days, if they had more time I'm sure it would've been a lot better. Not bad for first timers > director & screen writer/actor.
vancouverisland 2005-02-18, 04:54 PM This is a really cool DVD of animated music. These guys are very creative plus it amuses my toddler for a while.
Good luck trying to find it though, I finally got mine at London Drugs as it was not available many places.
animusic.com has some nifty previews if you are interested.
RNAChemist 2005-02-19, 01:43 AM I watched "Escape from New York" tonight. Good movie. Interesting scene that I noticed near the beginning. The president's plane is going down right into the World Trade Center. Kind of eerie, actually resembled footage of 9-11.
eljay 2005-02-19, 11:20 AM Saw -A psychological/suspense thriller about two trapped men, the latest "contestants" in a deranged killer's game, who must decide which desperate measure they will take in order to free themselves before the clock runs out.
My wife and I watched it last night. Yup, she watched it because, as it turns out, it was nowhere near as gruesome as the commercials lead one to believe. It was, in many ways, quite similar to Se7en in that the concepts (and there are some good ones!) and occasional images of violence are more shocking than its graphic depiction.
The only real weaknesses were the relatively poor performances by Cary Elwes (not surprising since I've never found him to be a particularly good actor; nevertheless, near the end he was quite convincing) and Danny Glover. The finale was not overly-dramatic, but it was surprising and effectively chilling.
filper 2005-02-20, 09:17 AM Last night I had the house to myself, so I watched T2 Extreme Disc 1 on the new set...
I've probably watched T2 7 times over the years, but not like this :).
A stunning transfer from a pristine print. Absolutely enjoyable.
eljay 2005-02-20, 06:32 PM I watched the copy of Top Secret I picked up on sale at Wal-Mart last week. Major disappointment! Aside from a few chuckles, another nostalgically funny film has bit the dust. :(
Nanuuk 2005-02-20, 07:49 PM Lest folks think Eljay and I never get along, my wife and I watched The Forgotten last night. And we agree with Eljay's previous analysis and post. Started off well, ended poorly. Which is too bad, because there were a number of very good actors in this movie (Julianne Moore, Gary Sinise, Anthony Edwards) and the story premise was unique.
eljay 2005-02-20, 07:51 PM Lest folks think Eljay and I never get along ... What would give anyone that idea? :D
markusp 2005-02-21, 01:03 PM Recent films include:
Adventures of Baron Munchausen
Monty Python & the Holy Grail
Paycheck
Ferris Beuler's Day Off
Feeling a little nostalgic lately.....
Ryan Peddle 2005-02-21, 01:18 PM Over the course of last week and this weekend I have bought about 8 dvds. I'm doing my best to pick up ones that I have never seen before.
Of the ones I bought I have viewed for the first time:
I, Robot
The Day after Tomorrow
Moulin Rouge.
I liked all three, Mouline Rouge being the best.
I Robot was great...but Will Smith and Sonny were really the saving graces in the flick.
And the Day after Tomorrow, was simply a great popcorn flick. Love the CGI wolves.
Next to watch are
Cold Mountian
Fargo
Out of time.
