Real sad about WKRP where they replaces some (or most) of the music because of royalty issues. :( Jennifer’s doorbell was a classic scene..

The Painted Veil - romantic drama based on a novel by W. Somerset Maugham -- set in 1925, and mostly in rural China, starring Edward Norton and Naomi Watts. "Love, punishment, and redemption". For us, a wonderful movie experience. And spectacular cinematography (& audio) to 'wow' the senses even more!!

Watched Walking Tall (the original-with Joe Don Baker) on Mpix last night, great movie, if you have never seen this one, or have only watched the version with the Rock, do yourself a favor & watch this. Excellent movie, shows its age sometimes with some of the fight scenes not being done very well, but overall, just as good now as the last time I seen it ( 25 years ago). Tried to get the wife & 16 yr old daughter to watch, after 5 min they were bored & left. To bad for them ,they missed a great movie. 8/10.

Season 2 of Coach came out yesterday. The chemistry between Craig T Nelson and Jerry Van Dyke is amazing.

Creepshow 3 Has anyone seen this movie yet and if so how was it? I'm trying to get some input before I buy it so I can add it along with Creepshow 1 and 2 which I already own.

Pan's Labyrinth - I picked up the 2-disc set yesterday, and we watched the movie in the evening. Except for some comments I had read in a previous thread here (comments from people who saw the movie in a theatre, etc.), we went into this viewing quite "blind & unaware" of really knowing what to expect. Wow ... we thoroughly enjoyed what we saw!! I might say that going in, we had probably expected to see a bit more of the 'fantasy' stuff. But after seeing the movie, we really enjoyed the balanced mix of 'now' and sci-fi fantasy.
A viewing of the 'extras' soon, followed by a second viewing of the movie. Looking forward to it!!

Pan's Labyrinth - In 1944, at a military outpost in fascist Spain, a young girl has come with her mother to live with her new step-father, a cold and brutal officer charged with quelling a local rebellion. Isolated by the sorrow and violence that surround her, the girl is soon surprised to learn from an ancient faun that she is the reincarnation of a long-lost fairy princess. To prove her worth, however, she must complete three tasks before the coming of the full moon. Will the rebels succeed in overthrowing their oppressors, and will the girl regain her immortality?

Although it wasn't quite what my wife and I expected - the previews had led us to believe it was primarily a fantasy film - we did enjoy the movie. Both major storylines were interesting and well played out, and the CGI was (seemingly) restrained yet effective.

Breaking and Entering - A series of break-ins at Jude Law's architecture firm in London's King's Crosing area sparks a landslide of events, infidelities, deceits and a near tragedy. Gorgeously filmed and produced by Anthony Minghella, the film is as much about the broken relationships between Law's character and his partner and their autistic daughter.

Full Metal Jacket - One of the series of Vietnam flicks that hit the big screen in the mid- to late-'80s, the movie was pretty much as I remembered it: The boot camp first half was unintentionally funny, while the "in the sh*t" second half was mostly uneventful and even a little boring.

Five minutes of "Platoon" easily eclipses all of FMJ.

Quarter Life Crisis - One of Mongrel Media's Festival Collection, this is 87 minutes of pure torture as four buddies wallow in New York City's dating pool after one of them is kicked to the curb by his girlfriend (played by Lisa Ray) for being unable to commit. Plays out like a really long, bad episode of friends, but without the humor, acting, writing or production values.

Venus - Peter O'Toole (Academy Award Nominee, Best Actor, 2006) and fine supporting cast of Leslie Philips, Jodie Whittaker, Vanessa Redgrave.
" ... a charming and poignant portrayal of Maurice, an aging veteran actor who becomes absolutely taken with Jessie - the grandniece of his closest friend. When Maurice tries to soften the petulant and provincial young girl with the benefit of his wisdom and London culture, their give-and-take surprises both Maurice and Jessie as they discover what they don't know about themselves. A witty and wise celebration of how the greatest lessons in life can come from the most unlikely places."

A fine film, exceptional performance by O'Toole, and most enjoyable view.

Night at the Museum - The museum's new night watchman finds his job to be a little more than he bargained for: An ancient Egyptian tablet causes all the exhibits to come to life every night; the three old guards he's replacing are up to no good; and the monkey, well, he's just a pain in the @ss.

I was hoping for "silly but fun"; the movie delivered "silly and only mildly entertaining".

Notes on a Scandal - Sheba, the newest faculty member of a London school, is befriended by Barbara, the school's reclusive veteran teacher, unaware of Barbara's darkly obsessive and amorous intentions. When Barbara discovers that Sheba has been carrying on an extra-marital affair with a young student, she seizes the opportunity to solidify her hold on Sheba by means of deception and manipulation. Will the disclosure of the affair destroy Sheba's marriage and drive her into Barbara's waiting arms, or will it enable Sheba to free herself from Barbara's obsessive grasp?

The simple-yet-solid story is driven by both a wonderful performance by Cate Blanchett and an amazing and effortlessly powerful performance by Judi Dench. This is an excellent movie, well worth watching.

The Cowboys - new deluxe edition release of this 1971 John Wayne movie. Wayne plays the rancher who, deserted by his regular help, hires 11 greenhorn schoolboys for a 400 mile cattle drive .... all they wanted was their chance to be men .. and he gave it to them.
Sure haven't watched John Wayne, or a 'cowboy' movie in a long while ... we enjoyed him, and the movie!!
