The Public Enemy
The Petrified Forest
Angels With Dirty Faces

Lots of fun watching these great old movies.
james99 2005-01-29, 07:16 PM Came in the mail yesterday, not sure when i will find the time to watch them.
eljay 2005-01-29, 11:53 PM Secret Window - A dull "mystery-thriller" starring Johnny Depp as a writer confronted by a man who claims Depp stole his story. Even the "twist" near the end isn't particularly interesting.
JesseJ 2005-01-30, 03:49 AM Shaun of the Dead Very funny. Loved this one. Would watch it again. The whole movie is not just a joke, there actually is a story and feelings....but then it gets funny again, and again, and again. If you like horror, or comedy, watch this one. There is a fair amount of blood, so it's mainly for the older crowd.
johnp'in'bc 2005-01-30, 05:24 PM Watched 'Secret Window' on MC awhile back -- we were unimpressed as well, and glad that I hadn't purchased the dvd when it came out, or even rented it. We usually like Johnny Depp -- this was not a movie he'll likely highlight in his resume.
bembol 2005-01-30, 05:28 PM I've been watching Pulp Fiction (Collector's Edition) over the weekend. I even picked up the Soundtrack. :)
johnp'in'bc 2005-01-30, 05:49 PM Carnivale (Season One) -- we're now half way through this set, and have really had to work to restrain ourselves from watching more than two episodes at a time (to try and make the initial viewing last for a while). We've been totally entertained by what we've seen so far. Yes, it can be a bit hard to follow, or fathom at times, and it's often more than just a bit strange, but for us, that's been its appeal. Great stuff!!

Ciao
markusp 2005-02-02, 10:00 PM Just watched:
Sky Captain.... It was OK - very pretty but little substance.
Wimbledon - Pretty cute. Not as good as Love Actually but still pretty entertaining.
Cellular - entertaining at times but predictable / dumb.
Garden State - I liked this quite a bit but it could be pretty gloomy at times. Not really the "feel good" film critics made it out to be.
Harold & Kumar go to Whitecastle. I deserved the punishement just for renting this in the first place! A couple of really funny scenes but really long stretches of pure boredom or just stupid nonsense.
Can anyone recommend any "great" new releases? Everything seems to be pretty standard at best.
lprice99 2005-02-02, 10:09 PM Can anyone recommend any "great" new releases? Everything seems to be pretty standard at best.Ray was released this week on DVD. I recommend this movie mainly for the remarkable performance of Jamie Foxx where it seems at times like he is channeling Ray Charles. It is quite uncanny. The movie is good but, Jamie Foxx elevates the material to another level.
There are 3 editions available:
Single Disc Full Screen
Single Disc Widescreen
2-Disc Limited Edition
Two versions of the movie are included:
Theatrical and Extended
Nels Stewart 2005-02-02, 10:30 PM The movie is good but, Jamie Foxx elevates the material to another level.
Agreed. I thought the movie was about a half hour too long, and the ending is a bit weak, but Jamie Foxx absolutely OWNS his roll. If he doesn't win the Oscar for this performance, then there is no justice.
maxyvits 2005-02-02, 10:36 PM Not that volume 2 is a bad movie...it just doesn't have the same characteristics as the first one.
What, you mean like the action and gore? Gore does not a good movie make. I watched both today in one sitting and thought they were "good"--each had their strengths and weaknesses.
maxyvits 2005-02-02, 10:37 PM I have about 160 dvd's, and the last one purchased was The Final Countdown. I've slowed down on the buying because of HD DVD's coming soon.
I guess it's almost time to have that garage sale, huh? Poor bugger!
JesseJ 2005-02-04, 01:11 AM Friday Night Lights- Awesome. If you like sports, and you like movies, this one is for you. Not much else to say about this because it is so good. A definite must see.
eljay 2005-02-04, 08:06 AM Local Hero - I'd heard a lot of good things about this older (1983) movie, which presumably belongs in the same genre with films such as "Waking Ned Devine" and "The Englishman Who Went up a Hill But Came Down A Mountain". Unlike those movies, however, "Local Hero" has no particularly likeable characters, it has several completely pointless plot threads and, overall, it's rather boring. :(
Much better was Groundhog Day, which my wife and I watched on said day. Bill Murray's in great form and the movie's a lot of fun from start to finish.
Also Tais-Toi!, an uncomplicated but enjoyable French "buddy" film featuring Gérard Depardieu and Jean Reno as a couple of mismatched criminals who find themselves working together settle a score...and maybe open a bistro.
