Just saw Butterfly Effect 2. Ok, but definitely not as compelling or interesting as the first movie. 6.5/10

I usually don't enjoy this type of film, but I watched 'Saw' and 'Saw II' over the past 2 nights.

Interesting plots, both well filmed and above average soundtracks.

Two 'recent issues' of King Kong - 1933 (2-disc set in a metal can) and 2005 (3-disc set in plastic case). Really enjoyed watching both. Great to see and view the early version (the one that started it all!!) once again - captured to dvd in all its restored B&W glory. And the excitement provoked by the very special effects in the new version (especially disc 2, when it really happens!!).

We had seen both versions before, but these viewings were via our 'still very new to us' 50" plasma -- and much-enjoyed!!

We haven't got into all the "extras" as yet, but looking forward to!!

The Illusionist - Edward Norton stars as the mysterious illusionist, Eisenheim, whose performances mystify all, but whose desire to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart, Sophie, angers the jealous Crown Prince. After Sophie is found murdered, Eisenheim publicly summons her spirit in an attempt to identify the killer. The Prince, fearing that Eisenheim will turn his trickery against him, orders Eisenheim arrested. Rather than face imprisonment, Eisenheim chooses to join Sophie in death...or is this just another illusion?

I had high hopes for this movie, which turned out to be only slightly more than a mediocre love story. Oh, well. :(

The Night Listener - The host of a night-time radio program develops a telephone friendship with a dying boy and his foster mother. When he decides to pay them a visit, he finds the boy missing and the mother strangely evasive. His search for an answer to the mystery proves both difficult and dangerous.

This isn't a particularly great film - in fact, there's really not very much to it - but it has great atmosphere, it manages to be consistently good from start to finish and it features decent performances by Robin Williams and Toni Collette (both of whom are capable actors).

We watched Munich last night.

Better than I expected because it focused more on the aftermath rather than the horrible events themselves.

The Great Happiness Space is a documentary about some of the saddest, loneliest people you'll ever meet, the young, affluent giggolos who work at Osaka's "host clubs" entertaining for pay equally sad, lonely women. This is a slight film, only 76 minutes long, one of Mongrel Media's International Collection at Blockbuster, but by the end you can't help but feel a little despair after watching everyone use everyone else.

The Descent - Yet another "horror-thriller" about a group of adventurers, underground caverns and lurking evil. It was better than "The Cave", but not as free of hokiness as it could (or should) have been.

Rudy was ending. and I felt like a good cry, so I watched it, and guess what, I cried like a baby! Something about that movie always gets me.

Actually, for the first time, I started to well up when they came out onto the field. The reason for that was that I went to my first college football game this fall (Texas v. Nebraska, GO HUSKERS!) and it brought back all the amazing memories of that game, especially when the teams take the field.

Little Miss Sunshine

Definitely recommend this critically acclaimed little gem of a movie ...but only for a rental..I can't see much replay value.

It's quirky and has some good insights on a typical dysfunctional family.

The movie is redeemed by the climax in the last 10 minutes or so. We were rolling on the floor with laughter! I can't remember the last time a movie did that to me! I won't spoil it for anyone else...just check it out and if you don't bust your gut..check your pulse! :D .

City of God (Cidade de Deus) - This Brazilian film takes a stylized look at the violent and criminal underbelly of this Rio de Janeiro slum over the course of three decades.

The plot is somewhat spare and the movie runs a little long but, that being said, I found the story interesting, well-paced and effective, and the acting competent and convincing. I enjoyed the film; my wife, however, was unimpressed.

Sherrybaby - Maggie Gyllenhall is, in my opinion, one of the great underrated actresses out there, not really a big enough star name to carry a movie to box office success all on her own, but her work is always solid, and the movies she does appear in are always better for her presence. Here, she never leaves the screen and she really flexes her acting chops in a tough little film about a young woman trying to reconnect with her daughter and get her life on track after a turn in jail.

Superman Returns - Brandon Routh stars as the Man of Steel, who returns to Earth after a five-year absence to continue pining after Lois Lane and duking it out with Lex Luthor.

This movie pays excessive homage to the original film with a dull storyline, bland characters and a surpisingly faithful emulation by Routh of Christopher Reeve's bumbling dolt Clark Kent and earnest-but-hapless Superman.

The only things that really made this movie worth watching at all were Kevin Spacey's superb Lex Luthor and some great CGI effects.

Wishing Stairs A South Korean horror movie. Not particularly scary, although very good at establishing a creepy mood, but the endling is lacking a satisfactory payoff.

I don't recommend this one, after all, how many Asian horror movies with faceless spirits covered in long black hair can you see before you notice a pattern. A very boring pattern.

Nobody Knows (Dare mo Shiranai) An excellent Japanese movie about four siblings who live happily with their mother in a small apartment in Tokyo. The children all have different fathers and have never been to school. The very existence of three of them has been hidden from the landlord. One day, the mother leaves behind a little money and a note, charging her oldest boy to look after the others.

The performance of the children is fantastic and natural, completely devoid of the over-acting prevalent in Japanese cinema. Highly recommended.
