Monster House - A fun little animated film about a possessed house and the challenges three kids face when they try to destroy it in order to save the neighbourhood.

The story and animation are decent, but it's the characterizations - some of which are wickedly accurate - that really make the movie.

I also thought this little movie was quite well done with some humour that us big kids could also enjoy. If you watch some of the special features you will see why the characterizations were so accurate as all the actors put on suits for motion capture to make it more real. Very cool.

Talledega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby - I'm afraid Will Ferrell is becoming my new Jim Carrey/Robin Williams, highly popular comic actors who only capture my attention when they play dramatic roles. I really enjoyed Ferrell in Stranger than Fiction, but Talledega Nights mostly bored and annoyed me; I chuckled maybe once. Too many of the jokes went on past their stale date. Although, some of the crash scenes were nicely executed.

Poseidon - The capsizing of a luxury ocean liner by a rogue wave results in even crappier dialogue and acting than when the ship was upright. Some nifty CGI notwithstanding, both ship and movie flounder, then sink.

The Devil Wears Prada - Anne Hathaway is delightful as an idealistic young journalist who takes a job as an assistant to the powerful and demanding editor of an elite fashion magazine, played wonderfully by Meryl Streep. Be sure to check out the deleted scenes, one of which includes the screen debut of Streep's daughter; imagine having to make that call to Meryl, telling her her daughter ended up on the cutting room floor!

Nels ... good to see your positive comments on this one. It's been on my "I think we should view" list. It's now been bumped up to my "we should view" list. :)

Little Miss Sunshine - A quirky, disfunctional family goes on the road to get their young daughter to a beauty pageant in California. Tragedy, some hilarity and, of course, a few life lessons ensue.

Le Grand Voyage - A father and son learn about each other as they embark upon a road trip from their home in France to Mecca for the Hajj. This is one of Mongrel Media's "Festival Collection," and makes for timely viewing, as this year's Hajj coincides quite closely with the Christian Christmas season.

All the King's Men - Sean Penn is Willie Stark, a humble working man who pontificates and waves his arms in fury to become Governor of Louisiana, until scandal brings him down. Penn's performance is charismatic, but the rest of the stellar cast gets lost in all the convoluted and confusing subplots.

The original All the King's Men is a classic. It's a shame they ruined this version.

Rocky - I really wanted to like Sylvester Stallone's "classic" about underdogs, aspirations and boxing, but I just couldn't: I found that there was too much bad dialogue and acting and not enough focus on the more interesting elements of the story.

I'm glad I'm not getting this one for Christmas.

Is anyone else just totally creeped out by Stallone's face in the Rocky VI? (And yes, i know that's not the official title, but let's call a turd a turd.)

I mean, was it botox? Did he, Kenny Rogers, and Jerry Jones all go to the same butcher....errrrr, plastic surgeon? It just looks so artificial, like his face fell off, but then they picked it up off the floor, stapled it together, and glued it back on......just plain wrong!

In the spirit of Christmas, and all, we re-watched Bad Santa (actually the so-called 'Badder' version) Sat eve - good grief, this movie is "bad" (and I don't mean "good"), and it just seems to get worse with additional viewings. Not much to laugh at this time - I think we were finally grossed out by how truly bad the movie is.
