: What are you watching on DVD these days?
harmer 2006-08-10, 10:06 PM On a Clear Day - A laid off shipyard worker from Glasgow, Scotland, finds a new purpose and exorcises some demons in his life by setting out to swim the English Channel. Quirky characters, pretty scenery and a heartfelt, feel-good story make this a worthy little film to seek out at the dvd store.
My daughter rented this last week-end, so my bride and I watched it and thoroughly enjoyed it.
I was laughing out loud in some places, although it had it's sad moments also.
I really like most English movies, especially the phrases they used in this one.
JesseJ 2006-08-11, 01:31 AM The Bad News Bears (2005) - Great remake. Billy Bob is perfect as Buttermaker. He's so slimy, it just works perfectly. The kids were well cast too. Lots of profanity, and some great baseball action as well.
PQ on DVD was very good and clean. Audio was also good. Nothing spectacular, but clean.
If you like baseball, or the original movie, I highly recommend this movie.
Inside Man (2006). Denzel Washington, Clive Owen. A Spike Lee Joint.
Not your typical Spike Lee "joint" - no big message for the masses.
But a good, taut thriller overall; my only gripe was the payoff (or lack thereof) at the end. It just seemed to be building to something big/important/surprising....and there was a little, but more, it just felt like the movie "stopped", as opposed to "ended".
harmer 2006-08-11, 04:00 PM Inside Man:We felt the same way as we were leaving the theater a while ago.
It was a good movie, but not a great movie, but it had the makings of one.
My rating is 7 out of 10.
eljay 2006-08-11, 11:12 PM Zathura - Two brothers are forced to finish playing a mysterious game that has launched their house into outer space and placed them and their sister in danger. Will the astronaut they rescued be able to help them, or will they fall prey to the defective robot and flesh-eating Zorgons?!
This space-borne Jumanji is entertaining and it has some great special effects...but Jumanji remains the better film.

Ranking with 'Stagecoach' as one of the greatest of its genre, 'The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance' is the modern-day western to beat all westerns. John Ford, whose very name is synonymous with "westerns," directed the ideal cast. Jimmy Stewart plays the bungling but charming big-city lawyer determined to rid the fair village of Shinbone of its number one nuisance and bad man: Liberty Valance (Lee Marvin). And as if all that weren't enough, the biggest star that ever aimed a six-shooter plays the Man of the title: John Wayne. Super sincere Stewart and rugged rancher Wayne also share the same love interest (Vera Miles). One gets the gunman, but the other gets the gal.
eljay 2006-08-12, 10:34 PM Nostalgia got the better of my wife tonight so we watched Sssssss, in which a mad scientist turns unwitting assistants into sssnakesssss.
Since neither of us expected much, we weren't disappointed when the movie turned out to be a campy, cheesy piece of cr@p. :p
johnp'in'bc 2006-08-17, 09:01 AM The Night of the Iguana (1964) - Richard Burton, Ava Gardner, Deborah Kerr, Sue Lyon. "the film explores the dark night of one man's soul - and illuminates the difference between dreams and bittersweet surrender to reality" John Huston directed this Tennessee Williams' acclaimed stageplay. Shot in and south of Puerto Vallarta, Mexico (mostly at a site constructed near Mismaloya). Our first view of this wonderful movie - an evening well-spent!!
james99 2006-08-17, 09:08 AM Is Night of the Iguana available as a seperate DVD or is it only part of the recent Tennessee William's collection?
johnp'in'bc 2006-08-17, 09:36 AM I have the collection. Just did an amazon.ca check -- and yes, Night of the Iguana is available as a single.
james99 2006-08-17, 10:27 AM Good, didn't see it on the amazon.com site. I've been debating about getting this set for a few weeks now. May wait for a sale (it's not uncommon for some sites to have big sales on boxsets).
skypilot 2006-08-17, 01:54 PM Great movie! Very artistic and, surprisingly, non-judgmental, especially when they could so make fun of the North Carolinian family culture and also the fast-paced big-city culture. Some very moving scenes; one in particular comes to mind where each of the family bedrooms are filmed with no one in them--emptiness of room, of life. Wow! Quirky, too.
johnp'in'bc 2006-08-17, 03:22 PM james ... I got a decent deal on the Tennessee Williams' boxset at a London Drugs here (it lists @ LD at $59.99 - which is a considerable savings over what amazon.ca, and other stores here are asking for it).
lawman 2006-08-17, 04:24 PM I am re-watching the whole Lone Wolf & Cub series that was re-mastered on DVD by Animeigo on the HDTV. All six of them, one each night! Anyone who likes old Samurai movies, should check it out.

BradF 2006-08-17, 08:48 PM re: The Night Of The Iguana
Great movie. Great cast. One of the most moving scenes ever, when the dying old man recites that brilliant verse near the end.

I buy almost all my DVDs there. They usually have the best prices and shipping is free.:D
harmer 2006-08-18, 10:23 PM A Good Woman: A 2004 movie from an Oscar Wilde play. The stars are Scarlett Johansson, Helen Hunt, Mark Umbers, and a favourite of mine,
Tom Wilkinson as "Tuppy".
"A seductress, Helen Hunt (yummy), lures away the husband of a younger woman." The scenery is the Amalfi Coast of Italy in 1930, with a group of wealthy English society, who are staying in grand style for the "summer season".
A fun movie to watch, better than I was expecting.
Although with Scarlett and Helen, it couldn't be bad.
harmer 2006-08-18, 10:31 PM Scary Movie 4: Somehow I missed the first 3, but this one was a lot of fun and my wife was laughing throughout the movie, although she gave me one of those odd looks when I had suggested renting it.
I thought this was going to be a take-off on Horror movies, but instead is a take-off on the Tom Cruise movie, War of the Worlds, which I think you would have to have seen to understand many of the jokes and scenes in this movie.
So, if you saw WotW, and want a few laughs, give it a try.
james99 2006-08-18, 10:40 PM An old favourite comes to DVD in glorious restored colour.
On May 21, 1927, the world changed. “Lucky Lindy” landed outside Paris. And people who previously talked about the limitations of air travel suddenly dreamed of its limitless possibilities.
The Spirit of St. Louis is six-time Academy AwardŽ winner Billy Wilder’s recreation of the struggles and success of Charles A. Lindbergh, the pioneering flyboy who, like test pilots and astronauts to follow later, had the “right stuff” of aviation heroism. Lindbergh fan James Stewart, himself a pilot, sought the role but was initially turned down. But his persistence paid off, as Stewart added Lindy to his gallery of indelible portrayals of American heroes. He and Wilder together manned the cockpit of a stirring epic entertainment.
