johnp'in'bc, you're certainly right not to waste your time on a movie you can't "get into" when there are so many good films out there to choose from.

Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room

Based on the best-selling book by FORTUNE reporters Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind, 'Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room' details the shocking inside story of one of history's greatest business scandals. Unimaginable personal excesses, and an utter moral vacuum that posed as corporate philosophy, led to top executives of America's seventh largest corporation walking away with over one billion dollars while investors and employees lost everything. Narrated by Peter Coyote, this expose features insider accounts and incendiary corporate audio and videotapes that will have viewers' blood boiling.

Network -- "Still mad as hell after 30 years." A satire as stinging today as it was 30 years ago - maybe even more so!! Great movie, sure enjoyed seeing it again.

Good Night, and Good Luck

Good Night, And Good Luck takes place during the early days of broadcast journalism in 1950's America. It chronicles the real-life conflict between television newsman Edward R. Murrow and Senator Joseph McCarthy and the House Un-American Activities Committee. With a desire to report the facts and enlighten the public, Murrow, and his dedicated staff - headed by his producer Fred Friendly and Joe Wershba in the CBS newsroom - defy corporate and sponsorship pressures to examine the lies and scaremongering tactics perpetrated by McCarthy during his communist 'witch-hunts'. A very public feud develops when the Senator responds by accusing the anchor of being a communist. In this climate of fear and reprisal, the CBS crew carries on and their tenacity will prove historic and monumental.

Not a big Clooney fan, but he wasn't in it long enough to ruin it. Glad to see a B&W movie nominated for Best Picture.

Glad to see a B&W movie nominated for Best Picture.

Cinematography should have won an oscar. Beautifully filmed.

A History of Violence - An act of self-defence by Tom Stall (Viggo Mortensen), a mild-mannered, small-town citizen, draws the attention of mobsters who believe he's someone with whom they want to settle an old score. Is Tom an ex-mobster or is he just a victim of circumstance? The answer is...

...uninteresting. My wife and I were both extremely underwhelmed by this movie, with its simplistic story, pointless plot threads and mediocre acting.

Definitely disagree. Awesome movie, well-paced, unpredictable, well-acted. Viggo was great in it; so was Ed Harris. Cronenberg really hit a home run with this one. If anything, it could have been a little longer.

To each his own, to be sure, but the pacing was lethargic, the writing was uninspired, the plot twists were very predictable and several seemingly key characters and scenes were completely irrelevant. Viggo and Ed were alright (I'm a big fan of Ed Harris), but they had nothing to work with.

Agree with skypilot on this one. I thought 'A History of Violence' was rather 'quickly-paced', and especially so for a Cronenberg film. I too think it might/could have benefitted from being a little longer. I wasn't too impressed with Hurt's performance (but I seldom am, his monotone leaves much to be desired at times), but thought the others were just fine in their roles. We plan to view it again soon -- I wonder if we'll feel the same with the second viewing? Time will tell on that.

Hustle & Flow - When Djay, a pimp suffering a mid-life crisis, hears that a popular rapper formerly from the 'hood is going to be passing through town, he comes up with a plan to realize his dreams of a better life. With some help, he channels his desperate frustrations into creating a rap demo tape he hopes the rapper will promote, thereby providing Djay and his music with the exposure necessary to free him from his dead-end existence.

An intriguing and somewhat gritty film featuring an excellent performance by Terrence Howard as Djay. Some good tunes, too. (I'm not a fan of rap music, but I enjoyed "Djay's" numbers, which were all performed by Howard.)

I'm on a big animated kick right now.
Justice League: Season 1 (some episodes are very good, some are really lame)
Batman Animated vol.4 (pretty much good all the way through)

We're currently delving into some newly-released tvshows-via-dvd sets:

Murder One (S1), Grey's Anatomy (S1), and Huff (S1).

Some great lawyer/prosecutor/trial and doctor stuff's.

Jarhead -I found it to be an uninspiring forumulaic offering of life as a marine. Nice kid goes to boot camp where the big tough marines (hoo-yah!) mold him into the toughest SOB of the planet. Then they go over to Kuwait and basically sit on their butts. Nice cinematography though. Acting wasn't too bad either.

Yeah , Jarhead sure made you think about your own view of the young men who signed up in the military ....

Les Choristes - A teacher to a strict school for troubled boys tries to make their lives a little less miserable by forming a choir and introducing them to the joys of music and singing, a move which puts him at odds with the strict headmaster.

Although the concept isn't new, the movie itelf is gentle, charming and entertaining.

Crash --- Not sure why I resisted watching this one for so long, but finally overcame whatever it was, and gave it a view last night. Wow - we sure got totally absorbed by, and into this one!! IMO, it sure deserved it's award!! Best movie we've watched in quite some time, and one to watch again soon!!
