: What are you watching on DVD these days?
eljay 2006-02-19, 12:24 AM The Constant Gardener - While investigating the suspicious death of his activist wife (Rachel Weisz), a diplomat with the British High Commission in Kenya (Ralph Fiennes) stumbles upon a conspiracy of silence surrounding illegal drug testing on Africans. To avenge her death, he must expose the crime...but the senior bureaucrats involved will do anything to protect themselves and their secret.
An intense, moving and wonderfully depressing film.
Serenity - River Tam, a telepath held captive by the Alliance that has turned her into a deadly assassin, is freed by her brother from their laboratories. The two gain passage on the renegade spaceship Serenity, whose crew is unaware of the true nature of their cargo. When they come under fire from the Alliance that now wants River destroyed in order to protect an important secret, the crew and passengers of Serenity embark on a dangerous mission to uncover the secret and expose the Alliance's dangerous schemes.
Goofy sci-fi fun with some great special effects.
Enya Nod 2006-02-19, 08:24 AM I was thinking of buying flightplan. Is it worth the buy? I havent seen it yet, so if I am going to spend $5 on a rental and it is really good then may be worth it just to buy. I notice it does have a DTS track, how good is the sound? The premise is catchy, but the execution is poor. I don't think it's the kind of movie you'd want to watch again - or all the way through the first time for that matter. I didn't particularily notice the sound.

I've heard folks descibe it as Hitchcock-like but that may be a little too flattering. I liked it but the plot has big holes in it.
cyclo 2006-02-19, 09:39 AM Dvds I have seen lately that I liked: Constant Gardener, Hustle & Flow, Corpse Bride, Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit, Toy Story 2.
Dvds which were not bad: Red Eye, Wedding Crashers.
Pretty bad: Adaptation (hard to classify if this is a comedy, thriller or drama).

This is an Oscar winning film (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0268126/awards) and IMHO and pretty darn good movie.
eljay 2006-02-19, 10:56 AM Pretty bad: Adaptation (hard to classify if this is a comedy, thriller or drama).Movies based on Charlie Kaufman's screenplays are quirky and odd and definitely not to everyone's taste. I liked "Adaptation", but not as much as the better-made Kaufman-based films ("Being John Malkovitch", "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind" and "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind").
Nanuuk 2006-02-19, 11:29 AM Watched the Lord of War last night. Apart from Nick Cage's monotone acting style, my wife and I enjoyed it very much. Realizing its 'based' on true events, it tells a story of modern day arms merchants (the free lancing kind).
FortMacDude 2006-02-19, 07:50 PM Rented 2 last night and caught 2 on MC-HD :
Charlie and Chocolate Factory...Thumbs Down -
No Where near as good as the book, why Johnny Depp insists on making all his recent charecters over the top in "freakiness" is beyond me
Flight Plan - Slight Thumbs Down
Interesting Premise, Good first hour...the rest slides into eye rolling territory
Downfall - Thumbs UP! (Catch it on Movie Central if you can!)
Almost a documentary on the last 10 days in Hitler's bunker. Gripping but not for everyone. As a WWII nut, I loved it!. Great Acting all around!
Crash
One of the better dramatic movies I've seen in the last 2 years. Great acting, funny and gripping!. The racial insights ring so true !
skypilot 2006-02-20, 09:31 AM "Wallace and Gromit:" Great movie! Witty and fun!
"Zathura:" Loved it!
Two incredible family movies that leave most of the Walt Disney drivel in the dust.
jayme1009 2006-02-20, 09:38 AM Red Eye
Very solid movie.
Flight Plan
Not as good as red eye had some weak spots but still not to bad.
Saw 2
Very good movie better then saw.
sezer_79 2006-02-20, 10:17 AM I just rented Flight Plan this weekend.
It was kind of predictable. I was never quite on the "edge of my seat".
There was some nice camera work though!
Definitely a rental.
3.5/5
heybirder 2006-02-20, 10:35 AM Catching up a few movies I missed:
The 40-Year-Old Virgin - A few funny moments but not as good as people make it out to be, imho.
Wedding Crashers - Better than 40-yov. Some good laughs
Two for the Money - I liked the ending but this movie really dragged on
The Brothers Grimm - Awful, avoid
Mr. & Mrs. Smith - Not bad, Pitt was pretty funny in this. The ending was bland.
ilovemusic 2006-02-21, 07:54 AM I just watched the musical called "Rent" Loved it!! very good movie and the music was great... 5 stars
fatboyp 2006-02-21, 08:46 AM Watched "Kung Fu Hustle" on the weekend and really liked it. Lots of quirky characters, a touch of comedy, some awesome fighting scenes. If you like kung fu and want a laugh I would definitely recommend it.
Also watched "The Skeleton Key" last night with Kate Hudson......well not actually with Kate Hudson although that would have been nice ;) I thought the story was pretty good with a nice little twist at the end. They did a great job of making that big old house look creepy. Not a bad little horror/suspense flick.
s21477 2006-02-21, 09:47 AM I've been meaning to rent Kung Fu Hustle.
I'm a huge, huge fan of the wire-work done in the Matrix movies.
Can I expect something similar but in a more comedic context?
Cyclism 2006-02-21, 10:09 AM s21477:
Think of The Matrix, but with real Kung Fu (not stiff Keanu Reeves-style Kung Fu) but so over-the-top as to be cartoonish....and great!

Are u for real? How could you give Charlie and the Chocolate Factory thumbs down and only slight thumbs down to Flightplan?
I have (own) Charlie and the Chocolate factory myself and I could watch it again and again with my wife and daughter. Unless you expected to see an action movie or drama or sci-fi this movie is very good. And don't even get me started in Johnny Depp's acting, that man deserves an OSCAR in almost every movie he acts. Think about who else can you imagine doing Willy's role in this show.
BTW do not bash the movie because it doesn't resembles the book letter by letter. I could say the same about many movies, including my beloved LOTR.

Stephen Chow who made Kung Fu Hustle is a very quirky writer/director from Hong Kong. God of Cookery, Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle are pretty much the same story but in a different setting. Hustle is a send up to the old 70/80s Hong Kong flicks with his zany comedy added. Definately worth watching but don't get caught up expecting serious martial arts with or without wire-work. My only complaint, not enough "hustle", the dance scene at the beginning was great.
I'd also recommend Shaolin Soccer which I like better although Hustle is right up my alley as well.
Either movie I would highly recommend you watch the original language with subtitles. Hustle has an especially poor dub . I don't mind the Shaolin Soccer dub but they cut out parts of the movie in that version that actually explain the plot

I thought this movie was OK. Not as good as the original film (and rarely can movies be compared to their books). And while I'm normally a fan of Johnny Depp's work, this one, I wasn't too thrilled with. The main problem with this movie for me was the Oompa Loompa songs, not very good at all.
