I have seen 2 foreign DVDs recently which are both pretty good, I would rank both among the top 5 DVDs I have seen this year so far.

Downfall - Very good German movie about Hitler's last days.

Oldboy - Disturbing Korean film about revenge with an incredible twist at the end.

Watched I, Robot on MC. Liked this movie. It was a good action flick with an interesting story. Plus the sound was a great 5.1 presentation!

Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia ('74)
Sam Peckinpah movie. A rich and powerful Mexican rancher puts a bounty on the man who got his daughter pregnant. Great flick. Ebert calls it, "some kind of bizarre masterpiece".

Zulu Dawn ('79)
An old favourite finally brought to DVD. Excellent filming of the Anglo-Zulu wars of 1879. All-star cast. Spectacular battle scenes. A prequel to Zulu, the earlier, more familiar Michael Caine movie from the sixties.

No Direction Home: Bob Dylan -- A Martin Scorese Picture. Story of Bob Dylan's journey from his roots in Minnesota, to his early-days in the coffee houses of Greenwich Village, to his ascent to pop stardom in 1966. With never seen before footage, exclusive interviews, and rare concert performances. Great stuff, and directed by the 'Master'.

Alfred Hitchcock Presents - Season One -- All 39 original episodes of the Emmy Award-winning murder-mystery series. In Hitchcock's own words, a series that "brought murder back into the home - where it belongs". 16 hours worth of entertainment!!

I received the movie boxset today and this one is on order. On another note, this series runs everyday on BookTV.

James ...... wow, that's some movie set, eh!! I wish (now) that I had pre-ordered it!! I had had some thoughts of (maybe) picking it up last Tuesday, but after searching stores 'local' to me, found only one store with it in-stock (and only the one copy) and I thought the price was rather high (suspect it was MSRP). Went back in an hour just to peek at it again and it had been sold!! Suspect I will catch it though, it's just a matter of time!! :D

Only two stores had the 'tv series' set. I'm glad I caught it.

Some great viewing ahead!!

Very nice boxset. The box has a velvet type finish to it. Inside is a small booklet. There are 15 discs (14 movies plus bonus disc) in 4 cases. Each case (except last) has 4 discs inside (2 on each side). The art work is pretty impressive.

On another note, I already have all 14 movies. I paid $97.97. Not bad for 14 movies and bonus disc.

It's All Gone, Pete Tong -- An interesting mockumentary about a House DJ who's going deaf, brilliant performance by the lead actor.

My wife and I watched The Fifth Element tonight. It's an entertaining sci-fi flick and, although we did find Chris Tucker to be just as irritating as we remembered, we both enjoyed the movie a lot more than we did the first time around a few years ago.

And, of course, I'm in love with Milla Jovovich all over again. :D

Robots - "In a robot world, a young idealistic inventor travels to the big city to join his inspiration's company, only to find himself opposing its sinister new management."

The CGI animation is absolutely mindboggling but, as with the animated film "Ice Age" (made by the same studio), the movie suffers from a simplistic story, textbook saccharine and a lack of finesse with humour. A Pixar film it ain't, but it is worth a look for the animation alone.

Vera Drake - "A working class woman in 1950s England finds her life coming apart when it becomes known that she is helping women end unwanted pregnancies."

It's a quiet, compelling film - if a little slow in parts - with a straightforward story and some fine acting.

Crash (2005) - The expected and unexpected consequences of racial and cultural diversity emerge as the lives of a number of different people intersect over the the course of a couple of days and nights in Los Angeles.

It's forceful, subtle, gripping and disturbing...and one of the best movies I've seen in quite some time. I highly recommend it.

Yes, Crash is one of my favourite movies I have seen this year. Absolutely fantastic. Plus, being written and directed by a Canadian doesn't hurt any either ;)
