: What are you watching on DVD these days?
MarcP 2005-08-22, 03:01 PM This weekend, we watched:
Saints And Soldiers: I really enjoyed this movie. Excellent acting and great story. Started a weekend of movies well until we got to the next movie...
Cursed: Bad, bad, bad. I mean, that type of storyline has been rehashed countless of times in other movies with plenty of ridiculous scenes (even one with a werewolf giving the finger). I used to like Wes Craven, but the guy totally lost it on that one.
Movie weekend turned odd with...
The Jacket: I had problems with the huge plot holes in this one. What happens at the start of the movie (trying not to reveal spoilers here) seem to have no effect on the real storyline. Jacob's Ladder meets One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest meets Donnie Darko meets 12 Monkeys.
MitchM 2005-08-22, 04:01 PM I just saw another two.
The Upside of Anger with Kevin Costner - It's kind of a dramatic chick flick (I swear the g/f made me watch it) with some very funny moments and an unexpected ending.
The Final Cut with Robin Williams - It was a good movie, the idea behind it was pretty cool but unfortunately felt a little bit lacking.
Anybody else seen either of these two movies ?
I saw UPSIDE a few weeks ago. It was enjoyable enough but in a way it reminded me too much of "Terms of Endearment" right down to Costner wearing the 'Jack Nicolson' shades in one scene
Petee_C 2005-08-23, 12:37 PM Just saw Kung Fu Hustle last night and really really enjoyed it! It was like a 30's era gangster film meets martial arts meets Looney Tunes. Even my wife loved it which says a lot since she hates these kinds of films.
Recommend.
Kung Fu Hustle
Watched this with the wife, late Friday night.
Ok, but I like several other martial arts flicks better, namely Crouching Tiger, hidden Dragon, and House of Flying Daggers....
barely 3 outta 5 for me... too looney toons.
P
Will try Guess Who next.
bembol 2005-08-24, 01:18 AM Rented...
"Kung Fu Hustle" "The Ring Two" and "A Lot Like Love"
johnp'in'bc 2005-08-28, 03:59 PM 'Witness' (the new re-release of this 1985 Harrison Ford movie) - it had been a long while since viewing this movie, and it became a new title in my collection. For us, nothing to get too excited or thrilled over -- we enjoyed it, but thought we remembered it being better than this?
'A Beautiful Mind' -- our first viewing of this movie. Yeah, I know, with it being an Academy Award winner and all, how could we not have seen it? But I guess I had just let my strong personal dislike of Crowe get in the way of a viewing. Whatever, should not have, and we're sure glad I did not this time!! We found it to be a wonderful movie. Great story, acting, directing, and all. An evening well-spent, to say the least!!
JesseJ 2005-08-29, 01:03 AM The Ladykillers - Typical funny Coen brothers movie. Hanks played the professor perfectly, especially with the little snickers here and there. Liked it, but not like Lebowski.
jaazzman 2005-08-29, 08:48 AM jaazzman - how did you end up viewing Sahara already? I thought it wasn't even released yet.....
I have a buddy who works for a dvd retailer. They get some movies a week or two in advance, Sahara being one of them! Even better when they get screeners in months in advance. Gonna watch Hitchhikers GTTG tonight.
eljay 2005-08-29, 09:10 AM Dodgeball - The owner of a second-rate gym needs money to prevent his gym from being taken over by a malicious rival. He assembles a team of misfits to compete in a dodgeball tournament whose grand prize is just what he needs.
Very silly and predictable. It did look good, though, on my buddy's new 106" HT screen...
markusp 2005-08-29, 10:09 AM Thanks Jaazzman.
Watched LAYER CAKE on the weekend and really liked this film. In a similar vein to Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels without being a repeat of any of the ideas. Just a smart caper type film although admittedly, I needed to turn on english subtitles because at times, the english accents and slang made no sense to me at all ;)
BradF 2005-08-29, 10:50 AM Liked it, but not like Lebowski.
I liked The Ladykillers too, quite a bit actually, but that seems to be a minority opinion. The Big Lebowski sets the bar very high.
lprice99 2005-08-30, 12:48 AM I liked The Ladykillers too, quite a bit actually, but that seems to be a minority opinion. The Big Lebowski sets the bar very high.
Fargo is one of the Coen Brothers best movies.
JesseJ 2005-08-30, 08:25 AM I completely forgot about Fargo. How Dare I :(
Also I loved O Brother.
Darkman 2005-08-30, 03:22 PM Watched Papillon on Sunday night. Had watched it in couple of years...it was really good.
First time I watched with the subwoofer, and I was very impressed with the bass extension of the score, really added a sense of dread; very good for such an old movie.
Highly recommended.

james99 2005-08-30, 06:05 PM I'll be watching Papillon this weekend. I have 2 or 3 movies in the Steve Mcqueen boxset that I haven't watched yet.
johnp'in'bc 2005-08-30, 06:15 PM Yeah, me too -- and Papillon is one of the best movies in the set. It's been awhile since I watched it, and seeing these comments has me looking forward to viewing it again.
eljay 2005-09-03, 10:07 PM The Woodsman - Kevin Bacon stars as a parolled child molester trying to re-integrate himself into society while dealing with his ever-lurking deamons. It's a brief (87 min.), sparse film that, while never graphic, is surprisingly compelling and discomfiting.
Nanuuk 2005-09-03, 11:25 PM Justed watched Sahara with my wife. We both enjoyed it immensely. Sure it standard action fare, but the cinematography and music were great.
johnp'in'bc 2005-09-04, 12:39 PM Watched Some Like It Hot last night -- a little comic relief, and welcome change from the heavier stuff we've been watching of late!! I had forgot just how cute MM had been :D
johnp'in'bc 2005-09-09, 05:38 PM 'The Sting' -- the newly-released 'Legacy Edition'. Found the movie fun to watch again -- it's been a very long time between viewings!! A second disc of extras is included -- we skipped it for now, will catch them (or at least some of them) another time.
'LOST' - Season One -- watched the 2-episode pilot last night. We hadn't seen anything of this show -- we were impressed, and sure enjoyed what we've seen so far. Looking forward to catching the rest of the season. And 'wow', it sure 'looks' good!!
RNAChemist 2005-09-09, 09:43 PM I've been watching House season one. Just released this week. Great show. Cleaver dry humour.
