: What are you watching on DVD these days?
smegger2000 2005-08-16, 02:53 PM ok I was able to get it today at Blockbuster, Didn't realise it was all in subtitles though ...
That's the only way to watch foreign films.....Hitler speaking english through a bad dub job.....I shudder to think what that would sound like.
ilovemusic 2005-08-16, 04:03 PM true...
I was just thinking maybe I got the wrong version and that there was an English version, I just watched a bit of the movie , can't wait to see it tonight!!
eljay 2005-08-18, 10:59 PM AVP -Aliens and Predators duke it out in a subterranean Antarctic temple.
I had very low expectations going into this movie and I wasn't disappointed. This is a movie that should never have been made. The only positive things about it are that it moves along at a fairly brisk pace and that it's short (90 minutes).
johnp'in'bc 2005-08-19, 02:58 PM The Birdcage -- It had been a very long while since we first viewed this movie -- it's still lots of fun to watch. Priceless performances!!
sezer_79 2005-08-19, 03:10 PM I just watched Guess Who? with Ashton Kucther and Bernie Mac. It was pretty funny actually. I'd recommend it.

yeah I agree, I was not expecting it to be as good as it was, but I laughed quite a bit through the movie especially the racial jokes hehehe!
james99 2005-08-20, 09:55 PM Island In The Sky:
The frozen, unforgiving terrain of subarctic Canada is the setting as screen giant JOHN WAYNE heads an all-star cast in this meticulously restored adventure drama. Set after World War II, Wayne plays Dooley, a former army pilot flying transport missions, who is forced to crash-land his fuel-starved plane on a frozen lake after it strays from its course. A desparate game of survival begins as Dooley and his men confront a meager food supply, limited shelter, inadequate clothing, a primitive emergency radio transmitter and an impending arctic storm. Meanwhile, Dooley's fellow pilots and their crews launch a seemingly overwhelming air search of the bleak, uncharted landscape - grimly realizing that the rescue of the missing men diminishes with each tick of the clock. LLOYD NOLAN, WALTER ABEL, JAMES ARNESS, ANDY DEVINE and HARRY CARRY, JR. also star in this engrossing tale of bravery, hope and survival of the human spirit.
markusp 2005-08-21, 07:37 AM James - sounds interesting. I've never even heard of that film before. Did you like it?
james99 2005-08-21, 09:41 AM This was one of two John Wayne movies that vanished from people's memories due to lack of television rebroadcasting, etc. John Wayne's estate actually owns the film. The other film that vanished was The High and the Mighty.
Here's a good article about the films.
I enjoyed both films and both were hits at the time.

MitchM 2005-08-21, 10:37 AM Angela's Ashes - rewatched this the other day. A really fine autobiographical tale about the life of famed author Frank McCourt, growing up in depression-era Ireland. McCourt won a Pulitzer Prize for the book.
Certainly not a comedy, but it has many notably humourous moments.
One of my favourites is "Frankie" in church at the tender age of five where he repeats the phrase at the end of his confession as he thinks it's supposed to be, "...In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Toast".
After 'Angela's Ashes', McCourt wrote 'Tis which I'd love to see made into a movie as well, but to my knowledge it hasn't so far.

I totally agree. Watching a film like Das Boot in dubbed English was almost comical compared to the dramatic effect of listening to it with the original German language soundtrack. Once you get into the movie, reading of the English subtitles becomes more or less subconscious.
The same was true of Downfall, which I too, really enjoyed. A dubbed English soundtrack is not an option in this film, and that was a wise decision in my opinion.
johnp'in'bc 2005-08-21, 01:06 PM '12 Angry Men' -- our first viewing of this fantastic movie. Henry Fonda, and other such great stars -- 1957 film, definitely a courtroom (more precisely 'jury-room') drama beyond comparison -- best of its kind!!
james99 2005-08-21, 01:44 PM 12 Angry Men is a classic movie with a great cast. I'm surprised they haven't made a remake of this movie.

jaazzman 2005-08-22, 09:49 AM Watched 3 movies over the weekend:
The Ring 2 - Nowhere near as good as the first one...
Layer Cake - Matthew Vaughn has a great career in front of him. This movie ROCKS!
Sahara - Not nearly as bad as I was expecting it to be. Very much along the same lines as National Treasure (mindless Indiana Jones wannabe)
Next up: Ong-Bak
sezer_79 2005-08-22, 10:04 AM I just saw another two.
The Upside of Anger with Kevin Costner - It's kind of a dramatic chick flick (I swear the g/f made me watch it) with some very funny moments and an unexpected ending.
The Final Cut with Robin Williams - It was a good movie, the idea behind it was pretty cool but unfortunately felt a little bit lacking.
Anybody else seen either of these two movies ?
SIN CITY. I'm a bit annoyed, however, that this release is a "bare bones" edition, with a two-disc set coming before Xmas. I didn't hear anything about this until AFTER the Aug 18 release.
heybirder 2005-08-22, 11:54 AM Next up: Ong-Bak
This is a really impressive martial arts flick. The story is contrived as you'd expect but Tony Ja is simply amazing. No need to rewind most of his stunts as the film will repeat them for you  Anyone that likes a good chop sockey movie will enjoy this.
markusp 2005-08-22, 02:43 PM jaazzman - how did you end up viewing Sahara already? I thought it wasn't even released yet.....
MarcP 2005-08-22, 02:48 PM There are plenty of Mom 'N Pop video rental stores that put new movies out as soon as they get them well ahead of the official release date. ;)
