: What are you watching on DVD these days?
lprice99 2005-08-10, 05:49 PM Cypher: This is about a man who becomes an industrial spy, but soon finds out that his job may not be what it seems to be. It had a very promising start, but I didn't care for the ending as it had a different tone to it than the rest of the show. It started as a mystery/sci-fi movie and ended as a James Bond type movie.
Nothing: Very different movie. It is about these two guys who have a very bad day and then suddenly everything but their home disappears. There is literally nothing outside their house. I really like the ideas behind this show, but it is very quirky and will definitely not appeal to everyone.
The same director (Vincenzo Natali) who directed Nothing and Cypher also, shot another movie called Cube which is worth checking out.
I ordered the Complete Buffy The Vampire Slayer from Amazon on Tuesday for $28.87 not bad for a 40 disk set. :o It was the number 1 seller by the time they removed it availability I wonder if they will deliver.;)
JesseJ 2005-08-10, 07:18 PM How good is Amazon at delivery?
Usually great and I buy a lot from them but they would not want to take the hit that delivering this item at this price would bring. I intend to make them deliver however, it is not like they pass the savings on if you have ordered and they drop the price.
So thehy canceled on Aug 13 stating that the set had been cancelled. I bet it shows up with a different number with the same release date and a new price. I could live with this more if the passed on price drops after you have ordered.
eljay 2005-08-11, 07:39 AM Open Water - A vacationing couple on a scuba-diving outing is accidentally abandoned at sea.
The sense of isolation and desperation that develops as they await rescue (or death) is conveyed fairly effectively. However, aside from that and the unexpected DD6.1 audio track, the movie pretty much comes off as the low-budget, self-produced indie film it is.

That sounds like a mistake. It was probably supposed to be for just one set.
I was definitely a mistake but I have a receipt...
markusp 2005-08-11, 09:52 AM Just saw Kung Fu Hustle last night and really really enjoyed it! It was like a 30's era gangster film meets martial arts meets Looney Tunes. Even my wife loved it which says a lot since she hates these kinds of films.
Recommend.

I really enjoyed this too but the dub is awful. I normally slam Miramax for holding on to movies and cutting some scenes but their dubs are decent. Sony used awful voice actors in this and poor translations. Watch this in the original language with subs.
And if you liked this and haven't seen Shaolin Soccer, get it!

I thought Open Water was a pretty good movie considering it was a small indie film picked up at sundance and shot on digital video with a budget of $130,000 (according to IMDB). Open Water earned around 30 million at the box office as well.

I saw Kung Fu Hustle in the theater and liked it. Kung Fu Hustle was released in movie theaters with subtitles.
HiDefBob 2005-08-12, 02:15 AM I highly recommend the Scottish movie "Dear Frankie". This emotional film is well acted and well directed. It is a real gem! Roger Ebert noted that poorly done this movie could have been real sappy ... but it definitely is not.
A synopsis - To protect her son from the truth, Lizzie has invented a story to satisfy Frankie's curiosity. She regularly writes Frankie a letter from his make-believe father who works aboard a ship traveling to exotic lands. However, Lizzie soon finds out his 'father's' ship will be arriving in a few days. Now, Lizzie must choose between telling Frankie the truth and hatching a desperate plan to find the perfect stranger to play the perfect father.
markusp 2005-08-12, 09:20 AM I've seen Shaolin Soccer and really enjoyed that as well. I've actually seen 2 different versions of the movie - the NA release and the Asian release. The NA release cuts out quite a few scenes.

Both versions of Shaolin Soccer are included on the Miramax/Alliance Atlantis release.
markusp 2005-08-13, 08:36 AM Didn't realize that. Thanks.
smegger2000 2005-08-15, 07:50 PM Watched "Downfall", German made movie about the last days of Hitler in his bunker in Berlin. Great movie with superb acting by all. This is a must see.
Showed that Hitler was just human afterall. A human that did horrible things to millions of people, but just a human in the end. That made it much more powerful, than just showing him as a madman 24/7.
ilovemusic 2005-08-16, 06:31 AM Where were you able to get this movie? I can't rent it at any of our rental stores , even Blockbuster

Here in Saskatoon the blockbuster I went to had 5 copies, and Rogers Video had 1 copy. All were rented out, I actually rented it from a locally owned videogame shop that also rents movies.
I thought downfall was excellent. I did not watch it in my home theater room so can't comment on audio.
