Kinsey -- I know this got lots of good reviews and an Oscar nomination for Laura Linney (who really deserved it for her role in the little-seen P.S.), but I just couldn't get into this biopic about sex researcher Alfred Kinsey. Some scenes, like the dinner table conversation with his two daughters, were just too weird. .\

I watched it last night and enjoyed it.
I think the dinner table scene was different only in the subject matter discussed. But the subject matter of "sex" was probably routine for that family, while it would not be for most others. They would be too busy discussing politics, violence, or sports, maybe.
It was very interesting to see how ignorant most people are about sex and how afraid they are to learn more, in case they will be looked down on by the "holier than thou" sector.
One of the Canadian director's at Cannes Film Festival said that he is getting nasty comments about the sex in his entry in the Festival, but not one comment has been made about the serious violence in the film.

Rented National Treasure Sunday night and we both found it decidedly mediocre. Being produced under the Disney banner, it seemed somewhat simple and childish at times.

'Silverado' -- great looking, fun view western. Wonderful transfer to dvd -- a 2.40:1 anamorphic widescreen, Superbit video, dts and Dolby 5.1 audio. Great cast, good performances. Two disc set -- the movie on one (133 min), extras on the other. Watched it last night, an enjoyable eve!

Twilight Zone - Season 1 - Definitive Edition

I've only seen a rare number of the original episodes and I'm really enjoying this set !! (and I've only finished up to disk #2!).

If you don't get hung up on the dated effects, and the constant smoking that most of the characters do (God..was that series sponsored by Tobacoo companies??) you can really appreciate the well told stories and the high caliber of acting !

Will pick up Season 2 this summer!

'Silverado' -- great looking, fun view western.

This is a great film and it's a fun modern western. The 2-disc superbit gift set also comes with a deck of playing cards and a 20-page scrapbook.

I thought the same. A buena Vista with Bruckheimer combo would have been better.

'Bullitt' -- watched the new special edition last night (it's included in 'The Essential Steve McQueen Collection'). It's been a very long while since my first, or any subsequent viewing of this McQueen 'classic' -- enjoyed seeing it again. Even the car chase -- with those streets & hills of San Francisco, it was especially fun to watch!! There's a second disc of 'extras' -- left those for another night.

Paycheck - Not bad, but not great. Interesting concept, and in typical John Woo style, alot of crap in Slo-Mo. On MCHD, OAR, not 5.1, just Dolby Surround. Not bad audio presentation, and descent picture. Some pixelation but not bad.

Napoleon Dynamite - Watched it again. With my parents. They loved it! And so do I!

A couple of items out of the 3 for $20 bin at FS:

Daughter Nancy sings the groovy title song and then father Frank gets down to business as a Miami Beach P.I., in Tony Rome ('67). Sinatra was a punk and just a fair-to-middlin' actor, IMO. I kinda enjoy watching his movies though.

Henry Fonda heads a group of homesteaders caught up in the French-Indian wars, in Drums Along The Mohawk ('39). A good, suspenseful, historical yarn, with a great cast of veteran character actors. A John Ford directed movie, shot in Technicolor.

The Phantom of the Opera - Great DVD, great movie adaptation of the musical. With Chicago, you had a styage director doing the movie, while with Phantom, you have a movie director (Schumacher; Phone Booth, 8MM, Falling Down, The Client) and it shows. Some musical types may scoff at the adaptation, but I thought it was unbelievable. There's just more you can do with a movie than you can on stage. And collaberation with Weber shows, as it remains very true to the stage production. PQ is excellent. Absolutly stunning. I wish I had an upconverter to see it even clearer. SQ is also very good, although it's a little low. I had to really crank it, but I didn't mind. No distortion or hiss when I had Masquarade turned up. Overall I greatly enjoyed this movie.

Picked up The Karate Kid (Special Edition) & Father of the Bride (15th Anniversary Edition) yesterday.

Finally, no more Pan Scan of The Karate Kid and an Anamorphic transfer of Father of the Bride.

I'll pick up the Director's Cut of Gone in 60 Seconds next week...

I'll pick up the Director's Cut of Gone in 60 Seconds next week...

All the same extra features are ported over from the original DVD and there isn't supposed to be much of a difference between the theatrical cut and the director's cut.

It's $14.99, not a big deal but thanks for the link/review

'The Getaway' -- from 'The Essential Steve McQueen Collection'. Decent movie - acting and otherwise - but IMO, falls short of an 'essential' viewing. Maybe it was just the 'mood' we were in at the time?

The Dead Zone -- David Cronenberg's adaptation of Stephen King's novel. Released in theatres in 1983, and on dvd in Aug, 2002 -- I found it in one of the Wal-Mart discount bins Sunday -- we viewed Sunday eve. Wow!! good movie, don't know how I missed this one over the years.

Would classify it as more of a suspenseful drama, than a 'true' horror movie. Christopher Walker in the lead role -- with his particular face and voice, a great role for him!!

A good movie, at a great price. A much-enjoyed viewing!!

Hitch - Will Smith stars as a "date doctor" who has problems with his own relationships. Mildly amusing, but predictable. (It was an in-flight movie. I would never have rented it.)

Another Will Smith movie: Bad Boys II - pretty funny if you like swearing. One of the best parts was when they were grilling that boy who was going to take out Marcus' daughter. Good action. Looked incredible on MCHD. A definite showcase piece, although it wasn't 5.1 (it was 2/1 Surround).

The Machinist -- Most notable for Christian Bale starving himself to a bonerack to play the haunted titular character who hasn't slept for a year, this is actually a pretty good little mystery/thriller that would appeal to fans of films like Memento or The Sixth Sense.

My wife and I watched The Machinist tonight. Bale did a great job of being emaciated and paranoid, but the mystery, once revealed, wasn't all that interesting and the ending was a bit soft. It's not on par with Memento or Identity, but it's worth a look.
