: What are you watching on DVD these days?
eljay 2005-05-08, 06:53 PM Big Fish - Ewan McGregor stars in this Tim Burton film about a son who wants to become better acquainted with his estranged, dying father, since all he's ever really known about the man is what he's heard in his tall tales. As he delves into his father's stories, the son finds that perhaps the tales are not quite so tall after all.
The movie does a wonderful job of conveying the outlandishness of the storytelling and it builds nicely to a touching ending.
filper 2005-05-10, 08:34 AM I really enjoyed "National Treasure" last night.
Mr. Cage is not one of my favourite actors, but I found the plot clever.
Nels Stewart 2005-05-11, 01:34 AM The Assassination of Richard Nixon -- Sean Penn gives an amazing and gutwrenching performance as a failed salesman who descends into madness as he feels increasingly betrayed by the American dream. Even more amazing, he does it without smoking a single cigarette!
JesseJ 2005-05-11, 02:07 AM Ocean's Twelve - Loved it. Many poo poo'd this movie when it came out, but I love the intracacy of the film. Looked and sounded good on DVD as well.

The Canadian version of the DVD drops the commentary track with writer/director Niels Mueller.

I think it was bashed for good reason. It had no plot and you had J. Roberts playing the role of an annoying actress - herself.
Both Ocean's 11/Eleven were/are better IMHO.

I though Big Fish was great, I highly recommend it.
Nels Stewart 2005-05-14, 11:19 PM In Good Company -- I seem to recall it getting some good reviews during its theatrical run, but I thought this movie, in which Topher Grace becomes Dennis Quaid's boss AND dates his daughter, was kinda tepid. The corporate stuff was alright, but there was no real chemistry between Grace and Quaid's daughter, played by Scarlett Johanssen.
Lemony Snickett's A Series of Unfortunate Events -- Good fun. But what the hay, Jude Law managed to insinuate himself into this movie as well!!!!!
eljay 2005-05-14, 11:29 PM The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Bill Murray stars as an oceanographer of waning fame who, while attempting to develop a relationship with a man who may be his son, embarks on what will prove to be his final documentary-filmed adventure: the search for the mysterious shark that killed his friend.
Despite the promising story and characters, the movie is sunk by oddball dialogue, delivery and editing. It was reminiscent of - although somewhat better than - director Wes Anderson's earlier film, "The Royal Tenenbaums", which I disliked.

I consider Rushmore to be Wes Anderson’s best film. I thought it was better than The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou.
filper 2005-05-15, 08:13 AM We really enjoyed "After The Sunset" last night.
Just another sh!tty day in paradise for Pierce :)
johnp'in'bc 2005-05-15, 04:55 PM 'Big Fish' was a big "thumbs up"!! Re: 'The Life Aquatic' -- I strongly disliked 'The Royal Tenenbaums', and when I saw this one was from the same Director, decided to pass. Now that I've read the negative reviews, I'm glad I did.
johnp'in'bc 2005-05-16, 09:14 AM Gattaca - "There is no gene for the human spirit". Finally got around to watching this "sci-fi thriller about an all-too-human man who dares to defy a system obsessed with genetic perfection". Much enjoyed the viewing of this fantastic movie -- an interesting and totally engrossing plot, with solid performances by all. And heh, 'Superbit' to boot.
Nels Stewart 2005-05-19, 10:30 AM The Sea Inside -- Last year's Oscar winner as Best Foreign Picture, Javier Bardem plays a quadriplegic who wants to restore his sense of dignity by ending his life on his own terms. Along the way, he writes a book and two women fall in love with him.
I don't know what this says about North American culture, but none of the six copies of this excellent Spanish film had been touched when I rented it on Wednesday, but right next to it, the whole wall of Team America was sold out...
eljay 2005-05-19, 10:37 AM Team America: World Police - I picked it up on Tuesday and watched it last night. Although there weren't any tears of laughter this time around, my thoughts about the film are pretty much the same as the ones I posted on this thread (http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?p=124019).
Proteosome 2005-05-19, 03:03 PM I really enjoyed "National Treasure" last night.
Mr. Cage is not one of my favourite actors, but I found the plot clever.
Just watched this and I liked it. I went in with very low expectations. I found it to be a good adventure romp with some interesting historical mysteries.
In addition, I watched this other movie awhile ago but was discussing it today, Shaun of the Dead. What a great, funny movie!
Nels Stewart 2005-05-22, 01:06 AM Kinsey -- I know this got lots of good reviews and an Oscar nomination for Laura Linney (who really deserved it for her role in the little-seen P.S.), but I just couldn't get into this biopic about sex researcher Alfred Kinsey. Some scenes, like the dinner table conversation with his two daughters, were just too weird.
But, if you get the chance, definitely check out director Bill Condon's previous film, Gods and Monsters.
filper 2005-05-22, 09:10 AM Growing up watching 'Captain Scarlet' and a whole slew of marionette shows perked me for watching "Team America".
Most parts were hilarious, but I think they could have left out the 'toilet tricks' segment.

I read that they only did that so they MPAA would tell them to cut it.
Team America: World Police - Loved it. Have to buy it. It was absolutly great.
bembol 2005-05-22, 01:03 PM My Blockbuster Rewards expires this month so I rented 5 DVD's last night to get my last free rental... :D
The Assassination of Richard Nixon, White Noise, Kinsey, The Last Shot and A Love Song for Bobby John.
As always Sean Penn was amazing in "The Assassination of Richard Nixon," love the movie but the DVD was pretty dry.
I like Michael Keaton but can't even recommended renting "White Noise."
I haven't watched the other 3, I have to blame the weather for this. :D
