: What are you watching on DVD these days?
Loosehead 2005-04-22, 11:13 AM I just recieved the Trinity trilogy from Amazon the other day. We watched "They call me Trinity" last night. I remember loving these as a kid but was worried that they would lose something 30 years later, but they were still awesome. My kids both loved them and I am still giggling today. I can't wait to watch the other two discs. A must see for anyone who likes Spagetti westerns.
The great thing about them is that they were only about $15 for all three!!
Nels Stewart 2005-04-22, 11:26 AM Love Song for Bobby Long It's about a half hour too long, and you kinda know where the story is going pretty early on, but Scarlett Johanson is definitely easy on the eyes and John Travolta gives a wonderful, gentle performance as a down-and-out alchoholic former professor.
BradF 2005-04-22, 12:09 PM I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a British company has produced it's own recent re-make of WOW. Didn't have a Hollywood budget, but still looks good. Also faithful to the novel. DVD expected about the time Spielberg's movie hits the theatre.

eljay 2005-04-23, 11:43 PM Birth - Nicole Kidman stars as a woman confronted by a 10-year-old boy who claims to be her deceased husband reincarnated. Despite the deliberate camera-work, the first third of the movie held promise...but it was all downhill from there.
johnp'in'bc 2005-04-25, 09:08 AM Meet the Parents - Had to see what came before 'Meet the Fockers'. Much-enjoyed, lots of fun. Looking forward to viewing both movies again soon -- will do a 'double feature' at that time!! :D
markusp 2005-04-25, 10:33 AM On DVD:
Meet the Fockers - this movie had my rolling on the floor laughing and pulling my hair out at the same time. Actually enjoyed this far more than the first one.
Ocean's 12 - really didn't like this movie. Re-hash of the first without being clever and the style of the cinematography just bugged me. Style at the expense of quality.
In theaters:
Sin City - first time in a long time at an actual movie theater. This movie was over the top in terms of violence and dirt. I don't know what I was expecting but this really hit me in the stomach. Some people love movies like this but I for one can't really get excited by it and would have skipped it if I knew what it really was about. Definitely not for kids (I know, I know... it is R rated).
JesseJ 2005-04-26, 02:17 AM Jurassic Park III - ABCHD - great presentation. Excellent PQ, and SQ. What a show off movie. The DVD version with DTS had a little more lower end, but the movie was fun to watch in HD. I notice ABC doing good movies saturday night in HD (Harry Potter this weekend)
Van Helsing - MCHD - fun movie, predictable.....a few good onw liners, and Faromir from LOTR was in it...who knew? Kate Beckensale is HOT!!! I'm sure there will be a sequal. PQ was great, show off movie for sure. SQ was alright for non 5.1, it was 2/1 surround...
PS...Can we change the name of this thread to "What movies are you watching these days?"
Nanuuk 2005-04-26, 07:06 PM I thought that 'monk' looked familiar!

johnp'in'bc 2005-05-01, 07:12 PM The Talented Mr. Ripley -- much-enjoyed. Interesting plot, great cast and direction. Lovely Italy to boot!!

mfabien 2005-05-02, 06:22 AM Flight of the Phoenix
Good story by exceptional LFE for 5.1 surround.
Saw it last week and will rent it again for a Thursday evening viewing with friends.
eljay 2005-05-02, 07:50 AM Monty Python and the Holy Grail - I hadn't watched it for some time so, after picking it up at Best Buy for $16.99 last week, I gave it a viewing. While it's not as out-and-out hilarious as I remember it being, it's still quite funny and has some excellent "classic" moments. If you're a Python fan, you're sure to still enjoy it. If you're not a Python fan, you may be left scratching your head...

Villager: "If...she...weighs...the same as a duck...she's made of wood."
Bedevere: "And therefore?"
Villager: "A witch!"
:D
Roger Corman 2005-05-02, 08:11 AM I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a British company has produced it's own recent re-make of WOW. Didn't have a Hollywood budget, but still looks good. Also faithful to the novel. DVD expected about the time Spielberg's movie hits the theatre. Thanks for the heads up on this movie. This is the version of WOTW that I was hoping Spielberg would make, but instead he went for a modern version.

Nels Stewart 2005-05-04, 11:05 AM Currently running in Movie Central is a movie called Sometime in April. Also a movie about Rwanda in those dark times. Has anyone seen it? And how might it compare to Hotel Rwanda?
PBS is airing this movie tonight at 9 PM local time. Alas, it doesn't appear on the PBS-DT schedule; does anyone know if MC or HBO showed it in High Def?

MCHD aired it last month I know, but a look through the guide only shows it being played on PBS right now. It will probably return like a lot og the HBO movie stuff does on MCHD. For example, Iron Jawed Angels just aired last night.
Cheers,
Nels Stewart 2005-05-05, 01:25 AM Les Choristes -- A heartwarming film about redemption through music at a boys' reform school in post-WW2 France. No real surprises, but a pleasant way to spend 90 minutes. Nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign Film, but alas, it didn't win.
lprice99 2005-05-05, 08:05 PM Les Choristes is a good movie but, it's unfortunate that no extra features were included on the DVD.

I rented this last night as well. Nels sums it up perfectly.
Nels Stewart 2005-05-08, 10:55 AM Enduring Love -- This British movie starts out with such great promise; a couple settles down for a romantic picnic in a field when they're interrupted by an out-of-control hot air balloon skidding across the grass. Bystanders rush to grab the basket and rescue the occupants, but a gust of wind catches the balloon with tragic consequences that will reverberate for some of the rescuers for the rest of the film. I really wanted to like this brooding psychological thriller, but none of the characters were realized enough to make it particularly psychological, and the climax devolved into pretty standard thriller territory. I'm only left with the question, how is it that Rhys Ifans makes TWO balloon movies (this one, and Danny Deckchair) in one year????
