I just heard something about Sarah Michelle suing someone, or firing someone because her acting in this movie was so bad!

Is she one of those Hollywood "divas"? Bummer. Well, while her acting wasn't particularly good, it wasn't particularly bad, either. (And she still gets all her bonus points for being yummy.) I think the real problem is that there just wasn't much for her - or for any other character, for that matter - to do in this movie other than get surprised a few times.

From what I have heard Ms Gellar was not all that fun to be around on the set of Buffy... not very well-liked.

I watched the Two Brothers last night. It was ok. I have no kids, so I am not sure why I rented this movie but if you have kids its a good one.

City of God (Cidade de Deus)- Absolutly great and disturbing movie about the slums of Brazil in the 1970's. Sad story about the gang rule, except for the main character Rocket.

Oscar nominated for Best Director, Editing, Cinematgoraphy and Adapted Screenplay. (All the nominations and sins are here: http://imdb.com/title/tt0317248/awards)

Gripping story. !Highly Recommended! I wanted to rent it a while back, but instead was lucky enough to PVR it on MCHD.

Watched on MCHD (PVR'd). Picture was great, lots of color and action. Audio equally impressive Dolby 2/1 surround, when used with DTS Neo:6.

Good Bye Lenin! - In this German film, a devoted Communist woman has a heart attack and falls into a coma for eight months shortly before the re-unification of East and West Germany. In order to protect the fragile health of his bed-ridden mother when she awakens, her son decides to hide from her the changes that have taken place by re-creating and surrounding her with the sights and sounds of the East Berlin with which she is familiar.

While the concept was interesting and the story started off well, the pacing was too slow and the movie dragged its way to being just shy of two hours long. (And my wife and I were very grateful that it had been edited down from its original length of 164 minutes!!)

1984 -John Hurt and Richard Burton star in this movie based on George Orwell's novel about the struggle of individuality and truth in a socialist dystopia. It was as grim and depressing as I thought it should be, but not quite as good as I had hoped it would be. Definitely worth viewing, though, if you've read and enjoyed the book.

A friend of mine just got bought NASCAR IMAX. He asked me if I wanted it for a few days. It's only about 50min. long but I really enjoyed it! Watched it 5 times last week, demo-ing my system to some of my friends. Surround effects are great but you have to keep your remote close by because narration is sometimes too low in volume compared to the rest.

Also rented Flight of the Phoenix last week, I guess it was okay.

I bought "Le Peuple Migrateur" which is a fantastic feast for the eyes if you like migrating birds and great landscapes of the world.

Twister - In need of some print cleaning up, but the DTS soundtrack is excellent. This would be a great candidate for an HD-DVD title. Still a great movie.

13 Going on 30 - Actually cute little movie. And Jennifer Garner is pretty easy on the eyes. (Watched on Movie Central)

Around the Bend

A quirky little road movie in which Michael Caine tries to heal old family wounds by assigning his son (Christopher Walken), grandson (Josh Lucas) and great grandson a series of tasks in his will to dispose of his ashes after he drops dead at a Kentucky Fried Chicken stand. Manages to walk the line between drama and comedy without falling too hard to either side, and the kid who plays the great grandson holds his own against some pretty formidable acting talent.

The Punisher - Went is with no expectations, and was plesantly suprised. May have been a little too funny though for the material it's based on. They needed whoever wrote for X-Men or Spidey. (and no, Kevin Smith wouldn't have saved this movie like some say he would have Daredevil) They set it up for a sequal, so it would be fun to see, if they got better writing.

Watched it on MCHD. OAR. Absoluty horrific HD trasnfer. This is NOT a showpeice movie like Kill Bill is. While it is nice to see more HD, the quality of this was sad. Not MC's fault, they only get the trasfer, they don't make it. But whatever, it's not like it's LOTR or anything (which is stunning in HD).
The audio had audible pops throughout the soundtrack, which was bad to hear, seeing as it was presented in 5.1. And what a 5.1 soundtrack this is. Lots of rear action, and lots of LFE. Great workout. Except for the pops. I will email MC and let them know about the problem with this soundtrack. I've never heard this on any other MC movie, HD or SD, 5.1 or not.

Edit: After reading this:
"The Punisher is presented in 2.35.1 anamorphic widescreen, and it has its share of problems. For starters there's a lot of film grain and noise, and more problematic is the severe smudging and loss of detail in far and long shots. There's also some serious ringing and haloing around the actors, especially when the character is wearing black.
A glaring example is near the end, when Howard is talking to Livia from the top of a staircase, looking down at her. Laura Harring is a good distance from the camera, and the video might as well be from VHS. It's grainy and seriously lacking in detail, even worse than the turkeys Miramax has been producing lately."
I couldn't agree more. IGN gave the video a 4 out of 10, for DVD. I give it a 4 out of 10 for HD. One of the worst HD movies I've seen (and I've only had the tv for 4 months.

Bought Trailer Park Boys Season 3 and watched it all in one day (so funny I had to keep going). The season finale is one of the funniest things I have seen in some time. Rented OPEN WATER last weekend. So much for getting Mrs. Zoo certified for scuba! I had trouble getting her to snorkle for the first time two years ago in Mexico. An amazing "indie" film. Took them 2 1/2 years to finish it. Amazing to think that the actors were in the water with the sharks and not stunt doubles. Well worth a rental for the movie and the interesting extra features.

Finished 24 - Season 3 last night. Last 4 hours were some of the most exciting tv stuff we've ever witnessed!! We've now viewed all episodes of the three 'old' seasons and are up-to-date with the 'live' season via tv. Wow, what a ride it's been!! :)

Glengarry Glen Ross - This movie is based on David Mamet's play about a group of real estate salesmen in a seedy Chicago office. The strength of the film lies not in its minimalist story - whose events cover less than 24 hours - but with the all-star cast (Jack Lemmon, Al Pacino, Ed Harris, Kevin Spacey, Alec Baldwin), the diverse characters (desperate, washed-up Lemmon; angry, opportunistic Harris; swaggering slickster Pacino) and the grittiness of both situation and dialogue.

I just finished watching Hotel Rwanda. I know, it's not out for another 1 1/2 week, but ZIP.ca sent me a copy regardless (not the first time they send me a movie before official release date).

Excellent movie. Truly a masterpiece. However, I highly recommend you also watch Shake Hands With The Devil before the movie. It's the documentary about General Dalaire and his failed UN mission in Rwanda. It really puts things into prespective and fills the void of what exactly the UN mission was dealing with. How they were let down by everyone else and had to struggle with almost nothing. "Hotel Rwanda" and "Shake Hands With The Devil" are two DVDs that go hand in hand. They really should be sold together, but just as it was back in 1994, I don't think most people would care much... It's only good drama.

I was disappointed by the extras of "Hotel Rwanda". They did not cover the UN at all and how the west let everyone down. They said nothing of Dalaire's struggle, they didn't even mention his name. In a recent McLean's magazine issue, he himself said he was never approached by the director. No consulting at all. He was there!! He was in the think of it!

This is one of my top 10 favourite movies of all time. Stellar cast, acting at the top of their game.
