: What are you watching on DVD these days?
BradF 2005-03-07, 10:20 AM Hi John. I inferred from your post that you might not have seen two of the earliest Coen Bros' pictures, Blood Simple and Miller's Crossing. If not, I would highly recommend them. Two of their best. I enjoy/appreciate everything that these guys do.
johnp'in'bc 2005-03-07, 02:32 PM Haven't seen those two Brad, but have seen, and enjoyed, some of their later work. Especially 'Fargo' and 'Man Who Wasn't There'. Like the music in 'O'Brother, where art thou?', but don't care much for the movie. As with 'Raising Arizona', for me, a lot of foolishness and not very funny (most of the time). I recognize their (Coen's) talent, but their stuff just doesn't always work for me. Happy viewing!
travisbell 2005-03-07, 02:35 PM I find their movies to be very hit-or-miss. I really liked Fargo, couldn't stand The Big Lebowski, sort of enjoyed O Brother, Where Art Thou? and really liked The Man Who Wasn't There.
You couldn't have said it better. I also find them very hit-or-miss. Some of the greatest stories on film, and then some of the not so greatest...
tonto 2005-03-08, 09:41 AM Recently got a Panny 700 projector and a 77" screen so I've been watching a LOT of DVDs lately. I'm sure going from a 32" CRT to the bigger screen has improved the quality of the films. Movies that I would previously probably rate as "average" now seem "prety good" eg., The Terminal, Garden State, I Robot, Troy, King Arthur, Sky Captain, Brotherhood (Tae Gu Ki), Napoleon Dynamite, Harold & Kumar, Ray. However, I still gots my limits, I couldn't finish watchinng The Day after Tomorrow or Mr. 3000. Now I can't wait to upgrade my audio section.
Well It has Been a rather Busy week on the movie front here,

JesseJ 2005-03-12, 08:19 PM Garden State- Good first effort from Zach Braff. Nice little movie, good story, and good ending. Enjoyed it.
Harold and Kumar go to White Castle- Funny stoner comedy. The unrated version is what Dude Where's My Car DVD should have been. Starring the Asian guy from American Pie, and the Indian guy from Van Wilder. 2 Guys get high, get the munchies, decide on White Castle, hilarity ensues.
White Castle- What You CraveŽ.
RNAChemist 2005-03-12, 09:19 PM I watched Garden State the other day. I liked it too. Yesterday I watched The Thing, good movie, special effects a bit cheesy, but I enjoyed it. Tonight I am going to watch I-robot again.
james99 2005-03-12, 09:22 PM Garden State is very good. Liked it a whole lot. I was surprised that i actually liked I-Robot. Was expecting a whole lot less based upon the trailers.
eljay 2005-03-12, 09:46 PM The Door in the Floor - Jeff Bridges and Kim Basinger star as a couple whose relationship has collapsed in the aftermath of the death of their two sons. The film tries to be artistically enigmatic but manages only to be dull and disjointed thanks to an uneven and completely underwhelming story, odd but uninteresting characters and leaden pacing.
Given the positive reviews it received, it was quite a disappointment.
Nels Stewart 2005-03-12, 10:04 PM Stage Beauty-Women weren't allowed to act on the Shakespearean stage, so Billy Crudup plays the roles to great acclaim and adoration. Clare Danes is his dresser, with a secret desire for the stage, and for Crudup. Their fates flipflop when the King revokes the ban on female actors. Some fun writing, but the movie could have been stronger without the somewhat forced romantic subplot.
My Architect-Academy Award nominated documentary about a son's journey to learn about his father, renowned American architect Louis Kahn, 26 years after he was found dead in a Penn Station bathroom. Who'da thunk buildings could provoke so much emotion?
smegger2000 2005-03-13, 12:57 AM Just watched Tae Guk Gi, a Korean made war movie based on the Korean War.
It was good, lots of battle scenes that were very reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan/Band of Brothers. I recommend it if you are into war movies.
filper 2005-03-13, 08:39 AM Last night we watched 'Ray' and 'Ladder 49'.
Both good flicks.
The photography on Ray was outstanding.
I had a lot of respect for firefighters, now even more.
Soulflare 2005-03-13, 01:42 PM I watched Raging Bull:SE last night. Great movie, and the packaging is very impressive for a $20 DVD.
Skidz 2005-03-13, 05:08 PM I watched Raging Bull:SE last night. Great movie, and the packaging is very impressive for a $20 DVD.
I also did but I wasnt to impressed with the story, DeNiro and Pesci were great but thats all I would say.
badkarma 2005-03-15, 08:23 PM Just watched Tae Guk Gi, a Korean made war movie based on the Korean War.

Yeah, I really enjoyed TaeGukGi as well. I have the R3 Director's boxset with DTS soundtrack.
I recently purchased the R3 HK release of "Shutter". It's a Thai horror flick in the lines of The Ring and The Grudge, except it wasn't quite as corny as those two. Recommended for horror fans.
Hab_Boy 2005-03-16, 12:16 AM Just watched ZOMBIE HOLOCAUST....man, theres a classic!!
tonto 2005-03-16, 09:40 AM I'm going thru a Korean phase lately. My brother recommended Old Boy which was really good. It won the Grand Prix at Cannes. So then I got Brotherhood, the biggest grossing film in Korea. I was smitten by the female lead Eun Ju Lee who is very pretty. Later I found out that this gifted actress comitted suicide a few weeks ago. Rumours had it that she was guilt ridden after doing her last film Scarlett Letter where she had "explicit sex scenes". So of course I had to see that one as well. Korean films now are where Japanese and Hong Kong films were about 10 years, innovative and cutting edge with really edgy writing. I just got Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... which is also highly rated, but haven't had a chance to see it yet.
harmer 2005-03-16, 04:46 PM Watched "The Alamo" and "Spiderman 2" on Saturday on DVD.
I enjoyed The Alamo and, although I knew the ending,
ha, ha, I probably learned some history that I had forgotten
since watching John Wayne years ago.
Didn't think much of Spiderman 2. He is a big wimp.
Even the girlfriend didn't look as good in this one.
My idea of Spidey from the comics was that he was older
and had more backbone.
Special effects were good though.
Nels Stewart 2005-03-18, 12:42 AM A Fond Kiss - If you're familiar with the work of Scottish filmmaker Ken Loach, you know he likes to serve up his working-class slice-of-life dramas with a good dose of social commentary and a heavy Glaswegian accent; this time out his target is the cultural divide when an aspiring DJ from a traditional Pakistani family hooks up with a Catholic music teacher.
eljay 2005-03-19, 10:46 PM The Grudge -Sarah Michelle Gellar confronts the angry souls of two dead people. There's not much to the story so, aside from a few requisite boo!! moments, it's pretty dull.
