Nine - Abandoned by his creative muse and with only days remaining before filming is slated to begin, an iconic screenwriter/director struggles desperately to craft a screenplay for his next movie, all the while distracted by the slow, sickening collapse of his complex personal life.

The story was a little thin and the movie ran a little long but, overall, it was a good musical with interestingly-choreographed and well-performed numbers. Daniel Day Lewis and Marion Cotillard turned in the strongest performances, but those of Kate Hudson and Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson were unexpectedly good.

Big River Man - Martin Strel is an unlikely world record endurance swimmer; he's an overweight 52 year-old flamenco guitar playing Slovenian with a weakness for whiskey, wine and horse burgers. But he's determined to add to his already impressive achievements of the Yangtze and Mississippi rivers by swimming the entire length of the Amazon. Instead he swims into his own heart of darkness, battling high blood pressure, sunburn, parasites, deadly debris, hallucinations and "the worst boat on the Amazon."
A poignant, if somewhat scattered, documentary that pays tribute to one man's obsessive determination and the environmental degradation of the world's great rivers.

Starring Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall, written by Elmore Lenard. It came out after Clint made Dirty Harry and Duvall the Godfather. My favorite Clint western is Josey Wales but this is also one of his best.

Pirate Radio (a.k.a. "The Boat That Rocked") - Back in 1966, life aboard the pirate radio ship "Radio Rock" was so much fun that the government simply had to put a stop to it.

I can't say much more about this movie because, after fifteen minutes of viewing, followed by a bit of fast forwarding, my wife and I couldn't take it anymore and turned it off. It was an overly-contrived, overly-busy and completely un-entertaining mess.

A Serious Man - Larry Gopnick is a pathetic putz whose life is a mess.

And that's pretty much it. There's no real story, just a bunch of stuff happening. The movie is far too stylized for its own good, and the ending is terrible.

If you like watching Toys fight it might work for you, otherwise a complete waste of time.

Fish Tank - Mia lives in a housing project. She's been kicked out of school. She has no real friends. Her mother is so self-absorbed, she doesn't care what she does. Her younger sister has a potty mouth. In fact, about the only things that keep her going are her hip-hop dancing, and her protective feelings for an old, broken-down horse living in an abandoned parking lot.
But when her mother's new boyfriend expresses some support for her dance aspirations, Mia finally has some direction. Too bad nobody in this dysfunctional ensemble has any redeeming qualities.
This is a raw, powerful little movie about life on the wrong side of the tracks that is tough to watch. Excellent performances.

Adam - A gentle, poignant romantic comedy about the blossoming relationship between a young man with Asperger's Syndrome trying to cope with life on his own and a pretty schoolteacher who moves into his New York brownstone. Nice performances by Hugh Dancy and Rose Byrne.

Sealab 2021 Just strange, but makes me smile.
It Crowd Excellent British comedy, brilliant.
Shutter Island Worth staying till the end, can be slow but rewarding.

Green Zone - It's 2003, Iraq has been attacked, invaded and occupied and Saddam's suspected WMD sites are in the process of being secured by teams such as the one headed by CWO Roy Miller. There's just one problem: There aren't any WMDs to be found. Frustrated by the suspicious and disturbing failure of military intelligence, Miller begins to dig for the truth...but he may not like the facts he unearths.

Some weak and/or obvious writing and situations aside, this was a fairly solid political/war drama. The lies that lead to the invasion and occupation of Iraq, and the destructive ugliness of the invasion itself are addressed in a relatively-restrained but, overall, effective manner.

An excellent series with a truly appropriate non-Hollywood ending. Not to mention the funniest FBI serial killer profile. :)

Well worth the time invested.

44-inch Chest - When Ray Winstone discovers his wife's infidelity, his old gangster buddies, including Ian McShane and John Hurt, rally around him to inflict a world of hurt upon her young lover.
All the swearing and none of the humor and kinetic energy of Sexy Beast, this movie is more like a play that doesn't really go anywhere.

Fish Tank - Aside from her love of hip-hop dancing, Mia lives a disappointment-filled life with her trashy single mother and her bratty little sister in a dismal East London tenement. All is gloom and despair until the arrival into their lives of her mother's latest boyfriend, Connor. Connor is kind and caring, and his seemingly sincere interest in Mia sparks her self-confidence and ambition. Will Connor be the inspiration Mia needs to get her life out of the rut it's in...or will he prove to be just another one of her disappointments?

This gritty "slice of life" movie started off well and looked wonderfully promising, but was ultimately marred beyond repair by numerous clichés, episodes of clumsy writing, scenes that were pointless or simply dragged out and - at two hours in length - a running time that was a good forty-five minutes too long. Truly a shame, especially in light of newcomer Katie Jarvis' strong performance.

Swedish Auto - Lukas Haas is a mechanic at a garage that specializes in fixing Volvos and Saabs. He's also a bit of a loner with an inclination to stalk a pretty concert violinist attending a local college. But he in turn is being stalked by the waitress at the diner where he and his co-workers always have lunch.
This is a slow, low-budget indie film in which every character rates pretty high on the creepy scale.

Middle of Nowhere - Anton Yelchin does his usual turn as a high school hustler with a money-making scheme. But his "courier" business needs a car, so he enlists the help of one of his co-workers at the local water park, a serious, pragmatic girl whose mom seems to have spent away her college fund. A fairly pedestrian coming-of-age movie with aspirations to be something more, but it lacks energy; this ain't no Adventureland.

Madeo (Mother) - When her only son - a shy, mentally-handicapped young man - is charged with the murder of a local schoolgirl, a devoted and desperate widow goes to extraordinary lengths to clear his name and bring him home.

Despite a decent performance by Hye-ja Kim, this amateurish and often dull murder-drama - which, at times, unintentionally verged on being comical - was not particularly good and, with a running time of two hours, was far too long.

A Single Man - Having decided that he can no longer bear to live without Jim, his deceased partner of many years, professor George Falconer spends his final day of life putting his affairs in order and sharing one last evening with his good friend, Charley. As the appointed hour approaches, George heads for home, only to run into Kenny, a student of his who is drawn to George and to whom, unexpectedly, George finds himself drawn. Could this be George's opportunity for a new love and a new life of happiness, and a chance for him to finally set Jim free?

This was a wonderful, gentle and stylish story of love, loss, desperation and hope, anchored by a solid performance by Colin Firth.
