: BEV HD-PVR Poll results (921 or 942)
Altaman 2004-10-31, 08:29 AM Well after having my poll running for almost 2 weeks, I have been watching the results and they have remained consistant throughout in that almost 80% of people wanting a BEV HD-PVR watch the 921 (9100) over the 942 (65 votes for the 921 and 17 votes for the 942).
While the amount of votes is not huge, I think that the result speaks for itself in that the 942 could/would be a failure from a sales standpoint as most people just don't want this crippled attempt to pass off a less functional HD-PVR.
The poll if you want to see it is located at BEV HD-PVR Poll (http://www.canadian-tv.com/forums/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=HDTV&Number=181819&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=&fpart=1)
Hopefully someone at BEV is listening!

Altaman 2004-10-31, 11:00 AM There appears to be some confusion as to whether the 942 records to HD signals from both tuners. As I have not read more of the posts of late it appears that the 942 may indeed record both channels in HD, but only output HD through the second output. If that is the case I can definately live with that (should really have S-Vid for second output though).
Here is a clarification Scott made on Oct 27:
HD/SD confusion clarification (http://www.satelliteguys.us/showpost.php?p=220131&postcount=105)
This is more acceptable in terms of specs, although the second output should be HD out not SD and not having S-Vid out is an error. Do it the way the 6100 does, if you use the S-Vid/Composite out you get SD output.

I still think the 921 should be released in Canada, waiting probably a year for the 942 which will come with its own share of bugs is not acceptable in my opinion. Keep the 921/9100 and get it so it is the best it can be, instead of releasing new hardware is the answer...not keep bringing out new hardware instead.

I'll take one :o Bell where is our HDPVR :(
Man wish I could get American satellite here
IrishDuke 2004-11-04, 06:52 PM Knowing Bev it will be more $750 (to protect against fall of our dollar+software rewrite) and I would buy it now.
Maybe Dish saw their sales stagnate because of the lower price upcoming Dish 942 and competition.
Please, pretty please I want one.
Altaman 2004-11-04, 07:04 PM The only thing that is going to make BEV bring out a HD PVR is by losing customers to Rogers/*C in a considerable fashion (once both have HD-PVR's)...until that time you can continue to look at late next year!

kelmk 2004-11-04, 07:27 PM I just switched to Rogers today for this reason.
IrishDuke 2004-11-04, 10:38 PM FYI - DISH Network just reduced the price of the 921 to $550.00 US.
I went to Dish and saw the old price (999 us). Do you have a link?
Altaman 2004-11-04, 11:32 PM Here is for Dish Store to get the 921 at $549.00

iknowbell 2004-11-05, 12:50 AM Look, Bell is a month behind on shipping 6120's right now, they are sold out of 5200's, (they do have systems however), so the last thing they are going to do is bring in this buggy machine that Dish can't supply in any real numbers, so get over it! When Bell does come to market, (more than likely March 2005) it will be a good dual tuner HD PVR with 30+ HD record capacity, for some it will be worth the wait, for others it won't.
dm_4u 2004-11-09, 09:47 AM Just to let you know...(and sorry to burst your collective bubbles...but), the buggy 921 has one HD tuner and one SD tuner.
Not a rumour...just the facts.
And combine that with BEV's 1000 dollar price tag makes this very iffy.
The 942, was "supposed to be" a dual HD tuner DVR, but it isn't even released in the States yet and it looks like Dish decided that a Dual HD tuner would be too expensive, coming on the heels of their 921 experiment at 1000 us dollars...yikes.
However, since there is a huge price drop on the 921 in the States as we speak, (999-499=half price), perhaps the 942 is ready to make a Christmas debut...at least south of the border anyway...that should mean perhaps by next Christmas for us...mark it on your calendars :)

redskull 2004-11-09, 09:49 AM So to hook up the 921 do you have to use 2 inputs on your TV (component (HD) and s-video (SD))? Or will both tuners work on the component connection?
dm_4u 2004-11-09, 10:05 AM Both will work on either connection...ie the HD will be downconverted to S-Video or the SD will be upconverted to Component Video.
But I'm sure everyone will connect both :)
Just to let you know...(and sorry to burst your collective bubbles...but), the buggy 921 has one HD tuner and one SD tuner. From my reading of the US Dish forums, it is my understanding that there are indeed TWO HD satellite tuners in the 921.
(ie. Both tuners are capable of tuning in either HD or SD channels.)
Seems to me a bigger deal would be made of this (if indeed it had only ONE HD sat tuner) with the D*HD-Tivo having two sat HD tuners.
One big difference brought up (besides the fact that the Tivo actually works as advertised) is that the Tivo has TWO OTA HD tuners, while the Dish offering has only one.
But I could be wrong (as my wife often points out to me) :)
dm_4u 2004-11-09, 05:10 PM Absolutely not...check this out...directly from the DISH website...
"DISH Player-DVR 921 is a dual-tuner satellite receiver that combines the power of digital video recorder (DVR) technology with the ability to receive and record high definition television programming directly from DISH Network and off-air digital broadcasts.
FEATURES:
Combined standard definition (SD) and high definition (HD) two-tuner satellite receiver that provides Picture-In-Picture (PIP)
Includes DISH Network DVR Service that allows you to pause live TV, play, stop, fast forward, fast reverse, skip forward... more >
250 gigabyte hard drive
Up to 180 hours* SD recording, up to 25 hours* HD recording, or a combination of the two
"Platinum Plus" UHF/Infrared 4-component universal remote control.
Up to 9-day extended Electronic Programming Guide"
When people talk of this receiver having two HD tuners, they mean ONE HD Satellite Tuner and ONE HD OTA tuner, (which to me is useless), plus the other SD Satellite tuner.
From satelliteguys.us:
The description you have is a bit flawed. Here's the comparison:
921: 2 HD tuners, 1 OTA tuner, 1 output.
942: 2 HD tuners, 1 OTA tuner, 1 HD output, 1 SD output.
And here's a pic of the inputs - note that the two SAT INPUT cards there are IDENTICAL; this would indicate to me that they serve the same function.
dm_4u 2004-11-10, 10:18 AM I do hope you are correct, because it does seem to be the common thought on this receiver.
And if this is indeed the case, then Dish would do better if they chose their wording wisely.
