recently activated a 6412 with shaw in calgary that was bought from ebay. Based on some of the information in these forums I was expecting to have to battle with them to get this thing on their system. To my surprise, they were all super nice during the three days it took them to activate it. The only delay was actually getting through to someone in their warehouse department. Other than that, they were all helpful, didn't hassle me that the box was from the states, and even directed me to one of their retail centre's to pick up free component cables since my unit did not come with any. I've had words with shaw in the past, but this experience was very positive.

Had a very good experience this morning. My 6208 died a couple days ago, tech guy came this morning and did a straight replacement, took all of 5 min. Thumbs up from me so far!

Just bought my second 6412 yesterday at the Burnaby retail outlet for Shaw. Very good service there. Friendly people and they were willing to go back into the storage to get me a "M" serial number 6412 instead of the older "GI" ones.

The lady who was taking care of the sale also added some PPV credits to my account and gave me all the digital channels again for 30 days. Very nice touch.

The authorization of the unit was equally good. The guy on the line was great and even noted that I wasn't probably getting the best deal on a package. Very straightforward and pleasant.

I have to say this was a pleasant experience. Now if they would only get more HD they would be top notch all around.

Well, this one tops it all.

I thought I would place a call to Shaw today and ask - AGAIN - about if and when new HD channels would be added. I figured, Hockey Night in Canada is broadcasting HD tomorrow so, why not?

Well, I have some great news! My CSR told me I did not need to have CBC HD to watch the game in HD. If CBC broadcasts the game in HD, channel 4 here in Edmonton will automatically transform into a beautiful, widescreen, HD format.

I said: huh?

She said: That's what those boxes are for, sir.

And when I argued she was misinformed, she said: mysupervisor told me earlier today because someone else asked. That's also what corporate headquarters has told us.

I could not resist posting this.

I also could not resist calling back to speak to a supervisor 5 seconds after I hung up. I'm waiting for a call back from the supervisor as we speak.

I'll keep you guys posted. LOL. What a sad state of affairs. I might as well laugh it off.

Are you kidding me? Do the CSR's actually believe this crap or are they just trying to trick people? I'm dying to hear what the Supervisor has to say when he calls you back. I'm almost tempted to phone in to see if I get the same response.

I was with Expressvu for many years but decided to switch back to Shaw, for several reasons:

1) I wanted to get the dish off the roof - it's not very pretty seeing a gigantic wok on the roof.

2) Pretty reasonable price of $24.95 for each new cable line (it took an average of about 2 hours for each new line) they install.

3) It used to be that Shaw/Rogers didn't have a PVR, and only Expressvu had them.

4) Switch-over incentives by Shaw.

5) Expressvu will give me $70 to trade in my old 5100 pvr.

6) The old cable lines coming in my house tested out poorly by a shaw techician, so those cables were replaced free of charge.

Shaw was the last thieving company we wanted to use they should rent these digital cable boxes out in the first place so you can see how bad these channels come in before you drop 400.00 or 800.00 dollars but if they did that they would probably would lose alot of customers

Not sure why you felt you needed to start a new thread to repeat something you've said elsewhere but ... seeing as you did.

There are definite issues with Shaw, but there are with all the cablecos and satcos. A review of any of the forums around here will show that as would any review of the forums on AVS about prominent US cablecos such as Comcast.

Yes, Shaw doesn't rent the boxes. But, Shaw charges less per month for the service. The tipping point in favour of the purchase is under three years (less than the life span of the box). In the long run, you are paying less for Shaw through a purchase than you would with Rogers for a rental.

Not sure if you have Shaw's total bundle inculding internet. If you do, Shaw's internet blows Rogers away. More stable. Less outages. Oh, and Rogers just spiked usenet support.

I am using Rogers as an example because that's who Shaw bought out in the Greater Vancouver Lower Mainland service areas. The state of the network Shaw acquired was abysmal and that has been a part of the problems we have had in content/quality issues.

There are things Shaw does well. Fully digital would be nice. A few more HD channels would be nice. But they are not thieves. They charge at or below everyone else in the industry for what they provide. All Canadian cablecos are significantly less expensive than the US ones and Shaw is amongst the least expensive of the Canadian ones.

IMO, your post lacks balance. I am not trying to talk you out of being ticked at Shaw ... there are plenty of reasons to be ... but there are some things they do well.

One thing to consider is just because you buy the equipment it doesn't mean you are stuck with it. Shaw like most other companies or retailers will give you a 30 day money back. When I got my box I had 30 days to try it and if I didn't like it I could return it no questions. So it's not like you have thrown your money away. If your picture is that bad maybe give shaw a call and ask if they can swap boxes for you. I had mine switched a no charge for the new phase 3 model and the picture quality is day and night.

Plus, a lot of us have had pretty good success with Shaw buyback programs in terms of upgrading from model to model for a reasonable cash outlay.

Get a Phase III version of the 6412 and you'll be much happier with the analog picture quality.

Well, a quick follow up on my earlier post about being told I could watch CBC in HD on an analog channel.

The supervisor I spoke with said that clearly, the information I was given was wrong. He ended up giving me a free 6 week full preview of all digital channels.

The other CSR I spoke with (not the clueless one) answered my initial question about new HD services in the expected manner (canned response). THat was the day before TSN HD was added. She also told me she would call me if anything happened.

Well, I have been told this countless times, but for the first time, I got a call back from her last Friday. She just wanted to say that TSN HD was now part of the lineup and that other channels would "soon" follow as "HD is supposedly one of the top priorities". At least that's what is allegedly being discussed at the "managers' meetings" these days.

I am just quoting here. Whether any of this will translate into tangible progress before the end of the year remains to be seen. But at least, I got a call back.

I don't know whether you saw my post in another thread on TSN-HD when I said I got a telephone call the day before TSN-HD appeared to tell me that TSN-HD should be on Shaw the next day between 9-11 AM. It appeared about 1PM but I am not complaining. It was nice to get advance notice of new programming on Shaw.

I've been a shaw customer for about 10 years and have had terrific customer service. When I wanted to get High speed hooked up about 4 years ago I phoned telus and they said they couldn't hook me up for about 6 months as they didn't have the room on their ADSL system. I phoned shaw and they had a guy out the next day. When I moved, they had a guy out right away again, he came at the arranged time (an hour, not a day or half day), and made sure everything was working right the first time in the new place.

BUT...

I live in Kamloops, and they have only 4 HD channels one of which is Movie Central which I don't want :(. 6 months ago I wrote an e-mail to Shaw and they said "more HD coming soon"... Wrote back 2 weeks ago, and got "more HD coming soon". So now I have high speed with Shaw, and TV with Bell Express-vu. The customer service isn't as good as shaws, Bell missed the first 3 install times, but now that my 9200 PVR is up and running, it's awesome!

No Discovery HD on Shaw. BEV and Rogers have it.
Shaw added the useless CTV-HD, which brings almost nothing new and almost no one wanted, but no Discovery HD which is 24/7 HD and everybody was talking about.
It sucks to have the worst cable provider.

You might want to hold judgement for a week or so. This channel sounds like it meets all of the criteria Shaw likes about HD. 24/7 HD. I'm sure they are going to add it. They have only been broadcasting for about 24 hours so far.
