: CLOSED — Shaw Gateway: Code Update 7.0.1b.17 (See Post #1)
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 02:17 PM This is a perfect example of a supposed 'change' that clearly hasn't happened and why Shaw doesn't publish 'change lists'. It's not the end of the world but it would be nice to know that what they think has changed has actually changed, wouldn't it? I make another call for 'real world testing'.
Reboot 2012-05-02, 02:25 PM having over 30 years in IT I know the problems associated with instigating change in a network, all hell can break out unexpectedly, even with exhaustive pre-release testing! That being said I agree Jetranger, let's have "real world testing please" :D.
SherrilJ 2012-05-02, 03:12 PM Being a software tester by trade, I concur!
:D

Gord Lacey 2012-05-02, 04:08 PM Why even have a screen saver? I can't say I've owned another Shaw device that has this "feature."
probc 2012-05-02, 04:53 PM Why is there not an ability to actually turn the portals completely off and save the energy? Seems silly to have them constantly running when not in use.
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 05:00 PM All cable boxes are never really 'off' as they need to stay 'on' so they can get daily updates from the master computer. It's been like this for ages. Many companies out there tell you not to turn off your computer at work for the same reason. Besides, the amount of energy used is negligible, as has been previously discussed in these threads.
Reboot 2012-05-02, 05:11 PM My Gateway and all portals just updated May 02 12:09AM
7.0.1b.17G5BR-P.348041
Reboot 2012-05-02, 05:20 PM I really like the ability (now) to use the installer menu to do a soft reboot of the Gateway and or each portal, I hated pulling the plug, too harsh!
TechGuy8 2012-05-02, 05:23 PM Sometime, soft reboot cannot correct the hardware problem.
Reboot 2012-05-02, 05:25 PM True enough, but 9 times out of ten it will fix the issues I have encountered.
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 05:26 PM I just sat down to watch the first part of the recent two part 'cross over' episode of Hawaii Five-O and NCIS-LA only to find the first part says I have a 1minute recording. NOT IMPRESSED!!! I don't watch H5O anyway but now I have to go and find it in a DL somewhere because I'm not going to watch it in SD on VOD(it's not available there anyway).
What a joke.
stanl 2012-05-02, 05:46 PM Jet:
Try rebooting your Gateway and see if that 1 minute doesn't magically turn into a full episode. I've had that happen a few times where I get the 1 minute thing and with a reboot the entire show appears. Usually with the 1 minute recording and another with the rest.
Noticed it first with a CSI episode that was recorded on Wednesday and appeared as 1 minute but after the regular Thursday morning reboot it was suddenly there. I've had it happen a couple of times since but after the reboot everything is there.
The other strange thing is that sometimes after the Thursday automatic update I get programs that I had deleted magically appear.
Life would be so boring without all the Gateway surprises to look forward to.
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 06:12 PM I'm giving that a try now, thanks stanl.
I see my guide data hasn't updated since early Monday morning. That doesn't look good. Given the reports of erroneous guide info, maybe there has been an induced problem that is preventing regular guide update? Who said we need real world testing?
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 06:22 PM What do you know, that fixed it!(Gotta love the Dashboard utility to reboot) I now show two recordings: one that is just a minute long and the other that is the full hour. I see the show was recorded on Ch206 but it has the Global logo in the bottom corner of the screen(damned simsub). Maybe that is why these one minute recordings happen? All I know is I'm glad the entire show is there for me to watch now. Thanks for the suggestion, stanl.
Reboot, you mentioned that you only just got the update. Does that mean your post about the 'screen saver' was 'before' the update or 'after'?
Reboot 2012-05-02, 06:25 PM No, for some reason all my hardware shows an update today, I received the 17B last week, wondered if this was an incremental change.
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 07:44 PM Are you getting that info from the Dashboard or the old Diagnostics screen? The Diagnostics page is the only place you can see where the actual 'Software Updated:' date is. Mine still shows Apr26, 2012 05:46AM
MetroVan 2012-05-02, 08:07 PM Funny that probc mentioned the Portals being always powered on, because I got a call from Shaw today concerning one of my Portals continually losing power. I already knew the cause of this: a household member was continually unplugging a Portal, not only to save energy, but because it's in a very small room that's the warmest room in the house and unplugging it meant one less thing continuously adding to the discomfort. Yeah, you can always open a window to vent the heat, but that's not always possible in raintastic Vancouver. The Shaw rep said that it should always be plugged in for the aforementioned reason, plus for other reasons not worth mentioning because it sounded like she was ad-libing (she wasn't the most technologically conversant person I've ever talked to and I'm not exactly a tech god).
Anyway, the household member has decided to ignore the Shaw advice and will continue to unplug the Portal. There will be some reconsideration if Shaw keeps calling or if the Shaw police comes crashing through the door to arrest everyone.
BTW, if anyone is curious about the power consumption of the Portal and Gateway, check out Jetranger's post (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=1274559&postcount=711) in an older Gateway thread.
Reboot 2012-05-02, 08:19 PM @Jetranger, Ahha I see said the blind man :D. Now it makes more sense, Guide, Entitlements & Resources were updated today, not the software. Thanks for setting me straight!
Jetranger 2012-05-02, 08:23 PM Not a problem. I'm just trying to ensure we are all on the same page. So, to be clear, you still have the 'system will shut off', or whatever it says, when there has been no 'activity detected' for a given period, 2-3 hours? (Screen saver timeout)
I'm running a test on my bedroom set right now but I won't know for another couple of hours. I actually saw that message when I turned on my main TV the other day and thought it was rather weird since I had just turned the set on.
roopster77 2012-05-02, 08:24 PM This is just a guess, but I think one reason they go to a screensaver (Portals) is so that they don't occupy a tuner - this frees them up for the gateway should it want to use all tuners for recordings...
I seem to recall on the old Motorola's that if it was recording, and you switched tuners you would see the channel being recorded...
I like this explanation and I think I will decide I am correct... Unless my wife reviews (as if) and decides otherwise!
