: CLOSED — Shaw Gateway: Code Update 7.0.1b.17 (See Post #1)
shawsean 2012-04-26, 05:22 PM Hey guys,
As I said before, the updating still hasn't completed yet and it's normal for portals to be updated before the Gateway or vise/versa.
If for some reason your equipment hasn't been fully updated by the end of the weekend, please contact myself and we'll be in touch.
Cheers.
Jetranger 2012-04-26, 05:25 PM Originally I was told the Portals only would be updated then later I corrected that info after I was told both would get the update. That was my bad so if you haven't gone back to read the corrections, you can't say I didn't update you now.
If your boxes haven't updated, you can try the 'reboot' option if it is available and see if that helps. The 'update software' button might be available too so give that a whirl and that should fix you up. I realize that these may not be options for everyone yet but it's a small attempt to try and help. Worst case scenario would be to power cycle everything but I would wait until tomorrow afternoon just in case some of the boxes are late on the list.
EDIT: shawsean beat me to it.
buckycat 2012-04-26, 05:32 PM I have definitely seen an improvement with FF/REW etc. I tried to trip it up and I couldn't. Time will tell as it was intermittent on my Gateway.
Jetranger 2012-04-26, 05:40 PM FFWD and REW have greatly improved but I was able to mess it up right away on a 'live' program. I was trying to skip back and it kept going to the same spot, over and over, but as soon as I hit the 'Back' button, it went back further as it should. Still, generally a big improvement over how it was previously.
Yet another example of how I can find problems they don't know exist even after all the 'Shaw testing'. (OK, so they do know about this and it's part of the 'not everything is fixed yet' but I am not shocked that it took me almost no time at all to identify a problem that is still there.)
buckycat 2012-04-26, 06:43 PM ^ Just tried skip back and rewind on live TV no problems.
JasonB 2012-04-26, 07:26 PM Yeah, Jetranger has had a "problematic" install from the beginning. The fact that it's getting better for him (even if it still isn't perfect) is a good sign. :)
Jet, I think you said at one point that general operations on your portal (menu navigation, etc) were slower than another member's setup that you had a chance to try out; has this improved at all?
Jetranger 2012-04-26, 07:35 PM I can't really say yet as I haven't had much chance to play with it as I'm trying to watch 'The Voice' from earlier this week and I keep getting interrupted. I started watching the 2 hour 'live' show at 1pm and I'm still watching it now and there's 15 minutes to go, lol.
Between posting, reading, answering the phone, making lunch and starting dinner, I haven't had time to 'play' with the new software and test it much. That's one reason I'm so unimpressed that I found an issue so quickly but I guess that is to be expected when you have the kind of luck that I do. My system has always been one of the 'difficult' ones but not as bad as some. Certainly worse than others though.
So far, the video transport seems improved but I'll be sure to let everyone know if I run across any difficulties.
JasonB 2012-04-26, 11:59 PM From what I've seen so far on my install, skips, prev/next, ff/rew are all rock solid. They were ok before, but with some lag and occasionally getting overwhelmed. Now, I seem to be able to click as many times as I want in either direction and it works fast enough that I don't even think about it. No difference live vs recorded. Good job Arris/Shaw. Keep it up :)
Ehmand 2012-04-27, 12:06 AM My gateway is updated to the new software, but none of the portals are yet (in Calgary) - Confirmed via installer menu.
Interestingly, the PVR commands (FFD, RWD, etc.) now seem to be way better, responsive and with no freezing. I'm somewhat surprised as I would have thought that was more of a Portal thing.
Ehmand 2012-04-27, 12:07 AM Nixxo, I've seen the same flip bar issues that you have, from day one. Hard to repeat on demand, but they happen often enough to be annoying.
sailorickm 2012-04-27, 12:29 AM Ehmand, I have 2 of 3 portals updated and not the gateway, and FFWD and RWD are as bad as ever (practically unusable), so it does seem to be (to have been!) more of a gateway problem.
atong 2012-04-27, 12:50 AM Got the update on my gateway and 2/3 portals...the only thing is now the channels only go up to 405. I have nothing over that so I cannot access any of the multicutural channels.
EDIT: I went to the dashboard and updated the EPG and everything's fixed now.
Cudtz 2012-04-27, 01:33 AM So far, I've only seen the update on 2 out of 3 portals and nothing on the gateway yet. The portals don't see the gateway or other portals yet (I'm guessing because not all have received the update yet.) I like that when your exiting out, it just lets you exit. From what I've seen so far, the dashboard is a way easier way of viewing what portals you have and the version they're running... even seeing the serial numbers is great (being able to tag the media players as to what room they're in would be better.... but it's still an improvement in my opinion).
Oh, before I forget.... Shaw actually has an Official Voice on here? :D Oh, I'm sure we'll all continue looking to see what Jetranger has to say... and then ask Shaw if they can confirm or deny these wonderful rumours ((I digress, apologies))
sailorickm 2012-04-27, 09:54 AM After 2 days of no further updates, my 3rd portal and gateway updated over night.
All the transport functions work fine now. Also, paging through the grid guide takes about 1 second instead of 3. It still takes 2 or 3 seconds for the guide to first appear though.
Jetranger 2012-04-27, 11:15 AM There were no intentional changes to the guide with this update other than with respect to where the 'last channel' takes you so any changes noticed are either incidental or just perceived at this point. At least that is what I am told.
One strange thing for me is I can only see two of the three currently connected Portals when I scroll through the list. This happens on all three of them so I'm not sure why this would be but they all have the new code and the Dashboard so I know they are 'up to date'. I still need to connect my three spares and see if I can force the update on them or not.
probc 2012-04-27, 11:55 AM Seeing that there is an official Shaw rep reading this forum (shawsean), can we get an official statement on what this "update" actually provides to us with bug fixes/new features? Virtually all other software producers maintain a version changelog, and this should be no different. I suspect many months have past here leading up to this update, and in the end not much was actually acomplished here, why is up to us to figure out what was supposedly fixed or improved, instead of just be more open and letting all of us know exactly what's going on here?
BTW: Hey Shaw - still waiting on DLNA, web-based, Android and iPhone apps for remote administration, how is progress in these areas coming along?
Sethlan 2012-04-27, 11:57 AM I have the exact same thing with the portals. 2 display properly on each, but the 3rd does not.
Also I had to manually trigger the update on 2 of the 3 portals, only the gateway and my main TV portal updated themselves. I gave it 48 hours after the auto update before pressing the update button in the installer settings.
GamerGuy 2012-04-27, 12:04 PM Virtually all other software producers maintain a version changelog, and this should be no different.
I absolutely agree. I am one who likes to go through those logs to. I am quite annoyed with the lack of this option, and I have already stated such to a manager a few weeks back.
It's just poor business practice to keep your paying customers in the dark in my opinion. {edit:} Especially when one pays in the hundreds of dollars for this hardware!
probc 2012-04-27, 01:30 PM To add insult to injury here, i can buy a .99 cent app, or subscribe to a $2.00 service online and they all have changelogs. Here's a multi-million dollar company treating their customer so poorly by lack of open communication. Truly it is an aweful thing that could be said about both Telus and Shaw equally, and probably others as well. Seems like this could be a good opportunity for Shaw to take a lead in the industry and provide better information to their users. Could be a great way to gain more loyalty amongst users.
If there is any concern about privacy or whatever for competition reasons, why not make use of the Messages option in the gateway and broadcast the changelog there? Do something creative and keep us informed.
Gord Lacey 2012-04-27, 01:32 PM My Gateway has updated, and one of my two Portals. Unfortunately I've rebooted the Gateway a few times today because channels weren't available (231 - HGTV, my wife's favorite). Not sure why that is.
