@shazbot - I just tried plugging my laptop into all 4 ports on the switch and I don't get an IP at all. My laptop connects fine wired to my router. What level of internet do you have?

Anyone else able to get an internet connection via the gateway?

Does the WIFI broadcast for anyone? Mine is currently not broadcasting.

Interesting about the 'switch' function working for you, shazbot. I'll have to try mine out tomorrow. There should be some info coming, starting tomorrow maybe, about this next code update. It might even show up on the Gateway messaging system. It will be interesting to see just how much info they include about the next code.

AFAIK, the internal Modem will not be 'in use' for our purposes but will be active to provide services for the Gateway. A physical link between your existing Modem and the Gateway will be required. This may change between now and when they finally activate DLNA in a month or so(fingers crossed).

I received a message today on my Gateway advising of the updates and linking to shaw.ca/bulletins (http://shaw.ca/Customer-Bulletins/Gateway-Updates/) for more information.

Any chance the new update will improve sound drop outs?
At last count close to a 100 over the past 5 days

this should be part of the fixes as it's on the list of "fixes"

improved audio and video quality which will reduce glitches and optimize picture quality

@Nixxo I plugged computers AND my router into the ports on the back of the Gateway... so the DHCP IP Address and the internet connection comes from the router, not the the gateway. I'm just using the 4 ports on the back of the gateway as a dumb switch.

Updates occurring the week of June 4:

enhanced PVR performance to improve scheduling, reduce live recording disruptions and recording playback disruptions
increased guide programming grid text size
improved Shaw Exo On Demand stability to reduce viewing disruption
improved audio and video quality which will reduce glitches and optimize picture quality
Total Home Portals will automatically adjust to the optimal setting from those selected
e.g. If you have multiple resolutions selected, your Portal will default to the highest resolution selected. However, if 1080p is selected, 1080i will also automatically be selected to ensure optimal viewing at all times.
overall performance and reliability enhancements

Future updates coming soon:

faster guide navigation and channel tuning speed
ability to customize screensaver settings
enhancements to PVR recording management

Glad we are being kept in (brought in to?) the loop. :)

*thumbs up*

Considering there are upwards of 400 'fixes' in the code, the details are more than lacking. At least they are using messaging system to give us some indication about what and when so that is definitely an improvement.

It's something at least.

Though it would be nice to see it all for sure. I'm just happy the time is almost here.

I did discover today that the 4 Gigabit ethernet ports on the Moxi Gateway are at least useful as a gigabit switch. I connected my SMC Modem/Wireless Router to one of the 4 ports and 3 computers to the other ports. I'm using the connection now to write this, and the speedtest looks good. Anyone else using these ports? Any reason I shouldn't use them?

That's interesting... I just bought an 8-port switch and installed it next to my gateway. I guess I should've tried the gateway first...

Oh well, I will probably need more than 3 ports anyway, but it's good to know I could use the gateway if I need to.

If I plug my router into the gateway and then plug my NAS into the router, can I access my NAS from the ethernet port on a portal?

IE: WDTV Media streamer -> ethernet connection to portal -> Gateway -> ethernet connection to router -> ethernet connection to NAS

That would have been so cool if it had worked! Unfortunately I just tested it and you don't get any network connection from the portal back to the gateway.

Specifically what I tested was: computer -> ethernet connection to portal -> Gateway -> ethernet connection to router

Thanks for checking!!! Really appreciate it.

What I described, and what you did, works flawlessly on Telus' Optik. So I will be cancelling my Shaw install and returning the gateway and portals I bought until Shaw enables this simple but required feature.

"increased guide programming grid text size"

I hope this doesn't mean what it sounds like. I want less '...'s, making the text bigger will only add more of those.

It was a shock to see a Gateway message used for something other than advertising finally!

until Shaw enables this simple but required feature.

Required for you perhaps, not for me.

Personally I'd rather the coax connection between gateway and portal be reserved for HD bandwidth not for Ethernet. I have dedicated network runs for, well, networking.

I believe it means five rows, not six, and yes, probably more '...'.

They should make it configurable. I'd rather have six, seven, or eight rows.

There is no way any HD could 'overwhelm' your coax. Having the feature as an optional extra wouldn't harm anyone who isn't using it, such as yourself - But it is the difference between me moving to Shaw and staying with Telus.

I agree this is a handy feature, but note that, if I remember correctly, this is not officially supported by Telus.

Note I didn't suggest in my note that I was concerned about HD streams "overwhelming" the available bandwidth. I did use the word bandwidth (poor choice) but what I meant to say is "HD function".

Nevertheless theoretically what you say is true but unless you know the specific implementation details, how can you be certain?

Just as an example, look at Toslink - Fiber optic bandwidth is theoretically large but some real world implementations hobble the medium.

That said I guess we can assume the ethernet link is/would be implemented over the same 400 mbps MoCA network the Gateway implements with the Portals. Most users will probably not find that limiting.
