Spike4881 2012-05-20, 01:45 PM I've had the system for a grand total of one day and found lots of artifacting and pixelation on the Disney XD (hd) channel. Hopefully the new f/w push will resolve that. As an aside are the portals always in an on state? It doesn't seem to power off or even enter a sleep mode. Odd.
Berty 2012-05-20, 05:25 PM Same as GamerGuy here. If it's a show I haven't seen yet, I select keep and then exit that menu and load the Guide. Then back to the recording menu, select the show and it now works without a restart on the portal.
Pretty sad state of affairs really. I was asked by a couple friends how I'm liking the Gateway, obviously it's a tough sell so I don't even try.
sibble-comp 2012-05-21, 12:16 AM Cant seem to find anything with any of the search terms I am using.
Is it possible to force a portal to output in both stereo and coax (spdif) concurrently?
I have 1 portal hooked up to a Hauppauge HD-PVR but the computer I am recording to doesn't have spdif (or spdif passthru) so the spdif outlet on the portal goes to an amp, while the rca stereo audio goes to the Hauppauge unit and from there to a tv.
As it stands now, I've been switching the portal audio output to stereo when I want to do a recording and back to digital/spdif when I just want to watch tv.
Is there a better way?

Mine are both active at the same time with no 'switching' required. Have you tried that or have you just been assuming because there are different selections in the menu that both aren't active at the same time?
buckycat 2012-05-22, 07:01 PM Hey Shaw. Take a look at this.

todddd 2012-05-22, 09:12 PM Hello all.
I am a bit hesitant to post this for fear of posting something in the wrong thread/forum, but I have searched extensively and I cannot find a thread (that is still open) on the topic of current feature requests/annoyances with the Shaw Gateway, so forgive me if this is in the wrong place. I have checked all of the tip/cheat sheets and see nothing to answer my questions.
Anyway...here are a couple of questions that I have about shaw gateway.
1. Am I missing something, or is it not possible to switch from a recorded program back to a live program without having to go into the guide? If I'm watching a recorded show and I want to switch back and forth from that to a live show (ie sports), I can't do that with one push of a button? I thought that would be absolutely mandatory for any pvr system. I mean, I know that you can press live while watching the recorded show, but then how the heck do you get back to the recorded show without going back into the list of recorded shows and having to select it. That is seriously annoying if that's the case.
2. As was mentioned in other posts, it is annoying to have the guide ascending and no option to switch it. My whole life has been the reverse and I can't believe with all of this technology that there is no way to flip it.
3. On my old pace/motorola dvrs, I used to be able to make a list of favourites, and then go to them and pull them up in the guide so that the guide shows up with only your favourites. Currently, I can figure out how to add a channel to favourites, but then it only shows the channels in a list and I can only view one channel's lineup at a time instead of five. So I used to go through a week's worth of five channels to program future recordings. I can no longer do this.
4. I know that this one is just me, but I can't figure out how to pause a show in one room and then watch it in another. I must admit that I haven't spent a whole ton of time trying, but I have searched it online and I have tried a few things, and I can't figure it out.
5. Just to make a list of 5, I can't believe that's it's not possible to list your recorded shows in a way other than alphabetical. That's seriously poor.
I really don't want to be a whiny consumer on here, but at this point, I would soooooo quickly switch back to my rigged up "whole home pvr" of motorolas/IR receivers. I think this thing has potential, but it's so frustrating to have it functioning at only 20% of what it's capable of.
Thanks for reading and again, I apologise if this is in the wrong place. I really did look for the proper home for this post.
Cheers.
Jetranger 2012-05-23, 12:41 AM There are other threads but your questions and 'observations' are valid here.
Answers (to the questions I can answer):
1. Press the 'Live' button. It's the one with the letter 'D' on it and the word 'Live' above it at the top right corner of the remote.
2. Agreed. This is in the list already but is worth mentioning again since Shaw seems to conveniently forget these things sometimes.
3. I don't use Favourites since they kept deleting them every time my old PVRs needed a reboot so I still don't use them now(read; sorry but I can't help you with this one).
4. Pause the playback in the room you are watching and then hit 'Stop'. When you go to watch in the other room, the playback should start at the point where you left off in the previous room. All you are missing is to hit 'Stop' after you have 'Paused'.
5. Agreed. Also in the list already.
rp_guy 2012-05-23, 04:33 AM anyone having trouble with 'dolby digital' output?
my sound levels are all varying between channels (i'm assuming the ones that are stereo vs dolby source)
the stereo channels have normal output volume while the dolby channels are extremely quiet (can't hear any sound except for slight background noises).
i've already done the stereo -> dolby trick in settings, which didn't fix it
Cio-Pao 2012-05-23, 08:25 AM I hope Shaw implements this soon.
Moxi DVR release 2.0 with web browser, apps and iPad remote (http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/21/arris-reveals-moxi-dvr-release-2-0-with-web-browser-apps-and-ip/)
todddd 2012-05-23, 08:30 AM Jetranger, thanks for your responses.

I do that, and that works to get you from a recorded show back to live, but then, to get back to the recorded show again, you have to go back to A (pvr), scroll through all of your shows, and then click your show.
On any other system I've used, simply hitting last makes it possible to move from a pvr show to the last live show you were watching and vice versa.
It's as if the PVR and Guide channels are two separate systems on the gateway, and that's tedious.
GamerGuy 2012-05-23, 09:42 AM I miss that feature. (hitting last) My Pace box did it. I miss the "favourites guide" thing to. :(
Last evening I was watching a recording and when it was over I went to start another. It asked if I wanted to delete the current one when I hit stop like normal. I selected 'delete' and confirmed. It was "deleting" for a long time. It then came back with a time out error leaving the recording there.
It happened again, 3 times yesterday alone. I think I know what's causing it. I leave my TV playing while I game. (Background noise/re-spawn time amusement.) It seems to happen when I either pause, then walk away from the TV for some time, or, when a recording ends, and it sits there for some time wanting a reply whether to "delete/keep".
If I "delete", it gets stuck with that aforementioned error and lack of content issue needing a reboot.
It seems to me, an uneducated man, that it may be to do with the "screen saver" feature, but I am just guessing, uneducatedly.:p
PokerChip 2012-05-23, 12:13 PM I hope Shaw implements this soon.

Me too! I read the comments below the Engadget article you point to. Someone claims to be working for Shaw and says they are testing it.
I'm not holding my breath for a quick release (know better as a long time Shaw customer) but this looks very good. Need it "last month". :)
Jetranger 2012-05-23, 02:40 PM todddd, I only have to press 'PVR' and it comes up on the 'last' program I was watching or at least the folder if there are more than one recordings with the same title. I realize a true 'Last' function would be more desirable so let's hope Shaw will listen and ask ARRIS for this in a future code.
todddd 2012-05-23, 05:48 PM Jetranger...yeah, you're right. It does bring you to your last pvr item/folder and then you press okay. So it is only one extra button or as my wife would call it: a first world problem.
CobraGuy 2012-05-23, 11:07 PM How about a user defined screen saver time out when live or recorded TV is paused? While it's not become an issue for me, I do have a couple of plasmas and it would be nice if I could set a screen saver to kick in after whatever time I decide is appropriate when something is paused. Somewhere between one and 30 minutes would be nice. My original Motorola PVR from six years ago could do that!
PokerChip 2012-05-24, 12:22 AM It would also be nice to be able to turn the screen saver off. I like to program at least one tv to turn itself On and Off for a few hours during the evenings while we go away for a few days. It's a great deterrent for thieves when they see a tv operating.
Unfortunately, the way things are right now, the tv turns itself on but displays the screen saver which is useless.
Jetranger 2012-05-24, 01:29 AM Screensaver options are also on the list and should be included in a not too distant future update.
GamerGuy 2012-05-24, 03:41 PM This morning I was watching a recording and half way through it my Gateway rebooted.
When I went back to play the recording it started from the beginning.
It (the update) started off so well, but the last few days have been a test in patience.
*sad face*
TechGuy8 2012-05-24, 04:40 PM I had the same thing happened while watching a recording yesterday.
They should fix the basic function, such as not rebooting, before adding more feature... DLNA is nice... But is keep on rebooting... it is no use to me.
todddd 2012-05-24, 05:31 PM one other thing that I forgot that I haven't seen mentioned:
when you're on the PVR menu, or any menu for that matter, you should be able to press in the numbers of a channel and have it take you to that live channel. So for example, I look at the pvr menu, don't see anything good, so I want to go to 219 and watch tsn, well, to do that, I then have to click back to guide or get out of the pvr menu before I can get back to the live channels.
Once again, this system seems to treat the PVR section as if it's separate from the rest of the system.
