Skip back on the Portals is only 7 seconds. I have had the issue where skipping in either direction can result in a much larger skip, either in the intended or opposite direction with just the press of the one button.

RobBob, you need to check your default recording settings as you should see a green dot rather than the exclamation point. That exclamation point means the recordings will be removed either after a certain time or if space is needed. If someone is watching the recordings and then changing the settings, you need to have a discussion with family members about it.

The default settings are for an extra minute at the beginning and the end of each show. The default setting is to keep each recording until I decide to delete it. No one is messing with the settings as well. Unfortunately, the Gateway does not always follow the default settings and does what it wants.

Well, if that is indeed the case, you may have a new problem for Shaw/ARRIS to look into.

@RobBob, If you have shows that were set as series recordings before you set the current default settings you have, those series recordings may have different settings when they record. For shows that don't appear to be recording the way you planned, it couldn't hurt to check in case they are series recordings that you may need to update to match you desired settings.

Thanks GWNorth, that seems to have been the problem. I had to go in and check every series I had set up and put things back to the global defaults. Now, that problem is fixed, but it begs the question as to what the point is of defaults, if it only applies to NEW recordings? Perhaps a dialogue box should open when we change defaults when the Gateway would ask us if we want the changes to apply to all previously set up series or not. That way we would at least know how the default setting changes would be applied. I had made the foolish (?) but obvious assumption that setting a global default would apply to everything.

The defaults, based on what you have said RobBob, seem to apply only to recordings that are set up going forward, not to recordings that have been set up but not yet made.

This actually makes sense. One just has to be aware of it.

This way one can set up the defaults one way and then set up a number of scheduled recordings and scheduled series recordings using that set of settings.

Then one can set up the defaults differently and then set up a number of scheduled recordings and scheduled series recordings using that set of settings.

and so on.

In this way one can set up multiple scheduled recordings that behave differently. Having new global defaults affect all already-scheduled recordings wouldn't be as useful and might itself create undesirable side effects, i.e. inadvertently changing settings you don't really want to change.

I use this technique to have some recordings kept until I decide to delete them and others kept until space is need. Your way I wouldn't be able to have two, or more, separate sets of recording options.

Your point about asking how the changes to the defaults should be applied is a good one, although not one I would find generally useful for myself.

@robbob

I am with you 100% on what defaults are. I had to change my defaults and then update 20+ series recordings manually. Defaults should be able to be applied to all existing series recordings.

Perhaps we should ask for that option for future updates?

A simple question when the defaults are changed:
"Would you like these changes to apply to all existing scheduled recordings?"

I have had a noticeable increase in response time and the disconnect messages have disappeared for me after the last update.

One thing that the gateway has over the older Motorola is better playback of recordings. My parents have the older Motorola with a extender and every PVR recording has those what seems like a buffer issue where the blocks and cuts of the audio become unbearable.

I am personally ready to see some UPnP capabilities turned on.

The ffw/rew without crashing is better with the new firmware for me, but the portals rebooting aren't any better/worse than before.

Though the night after all our boxes got upgraded, the main portal rebooted at least twice that night when we were watching TV. Needless to say the WAF took a bit of a dive that night, especially since I was talking up the new firmware fixing some problems ;)

DOH!

So after collecting parts for the past 18-24 months, to replace my current MythTV PVR with an HD Capable unit, I finally got an Hauppauge HD-PVR which I'm currently using on my Hackintosh until I get around to building the new MythTV machine. The Hauppauge unit is hooked up to one of my Portals using Component video.

I'm using the mac based HDPVRCapture software in the interim.

So, I'm wondering what IR Blaster code folks are using with HDPVRCapture and MythTV since at least in the former there is no listing for Arris or Moxi boxes for controlling the IR Blaster like the Moxi HT-1500 we've used with the Harmony remotes.

Also wondering, assuming you have a working IR Blaster code set, did you notice any changes in IR Blaster initiated control with the change to the IS2 (and IS2+) firmware. I would think not, but there have been a few comments about issues with the supplied IR remote control in this thread.

Suddenly, all my recorded shows show up with exclamation marks in the recordings list, and when I try to play back anything, nothing happens...it just sits there, even tho it says it recorded 60 minutes.

I've even tried playing back recordings that I was able to watch in the past but never deleted because my wife wants to watch them, same thing.

I noticed it when I tried to watch last night's Game of Thrones recording today and it wasn't working. I rebooted the Gateway and that allowed me to watch it, but now it's back to the same thing. I don't want to do another reboot as it's presumably recording House, followed by another recording I've set. So I'm not going to try rebooting again until after all shows are recorded (presuming of course the Gateway is actually recording them successfully).

Anyone have any idea what's going on?

Sounds like the index is still there but the underlying recordings aren't. Hopefully a reboot will resolve...

Do you have an expander installed? Is it still powered on and connected? When you go to settings, there's a section for external storage that should give you an option to disconnect (don't use it, just check if it's there)

If you access the installer menu (go to channel listing then press back next back next) and exit the dash board, there is a diagnostics section. The hardware diagnostics will tell you if there is a problem with the internal drive. This doesn't help much except knowing that a service call will be necessary...

I had my first Portal reboot while watching a recording tonight.

The "Account Settings" in the installer menu was update 1 minute before it rebooted. Does that get update on every reboot, or was there something else done that changed that date?

No expander. Just a single portal. Will reboot the gateway again after 10pm to see if it fixes anything.

I had my recording space jump to 96% the other day, and I realized my Expander wasn't being recognized. I had to reboot the Gateway to get it to see the Expander again. I lost a couple of recordings because the space filled up, but nothing too important.

So rebooting the Gateway *again* this morning seemed to fix my issue with replaying. We'll see if the problem persists when I get home to watch this evening. Will suck big time if I have to reboot the Gateway evrytime I wan't to watch a pre-recorded show.

Have to thank my lucky stars that I've not had to reboot my gateway in literally months!

Still get the occasional portal reboot though.

Trying to watch the season finale of NCIS and it seems there is some kind of issue with the recording between :52 and :55 minutes. The program starts to freeze and sometimes the 'cannot communicate' message shows up then sometimes it will switch back to the scene but only moves a frame or two then freezes again.

I don't know if this means there's a problem with the drive or if it's the transport stream. I can 'stop' and skip back or to the end without there being a problem so I really don't think there is a 'communication' issue.
