Heard a rumour that Shaw will be launching a new Arris Gateway in the coming months...Has anyone else heard this? Any details? Will you get it?

I was wondering if a new one was already out because I see the price jumped? My parents went to the web site to order one today because I told them they were $348. They got there and they are now $498. I thought perhaps a new model had come out. (hoping not myself! LOL)

This question is complicating my decision about whether to return my Gateway/Portal before my 30 day return period expires in a few days. Of course, just because a newer one might be coming along doesn't mean it would be better.

As with any new technology, there are always improvements that come along after the initial equipment is offered to the market. At some point, new equipment will become available in this system too. When that might be, only ARRIS knows since it's their system. Shaw is just a 'customer' of ARRIS and we, Shaw's customers, are the last in line to know when and what might be made available.

We can all hope it happens sooner than later but the first round of boxes have to sell enough units to pay for all the R&D before a 'new' system is usually released. This does give the manufacturer more time to 'work out the bugs' before the next equipment release but there will always be issues that will never be known by the masses as to why and when new equipment is released.

It's coming up on a year since the first system was released so we certainly could expect a second one to show up anytime now. My guess would be probably not until closer to Christmas but that is purely speculation on my part.

Sounds like they will release a new model and all of us who have the old one will once again be left out in the cold. It wouldn't be bad if they made the first version work but to release a new device before fixing this one leaves a bad taste in my mouth!

I heard from a shaw employee that they might release a motorola whole house pvr, with the current non-pvr HD boxes as portals, that box does have the ability to do it, I'm waiting to see how that pans out before I get a gateway

That is a very real possibility but I do know the 3400s won't be part of it. As for the Gateway system, I'd be very surprised to see a new offering rolled out before Shaw enables all the functionality of the current system. Hence my guess at nothing happening before Xmas.

Maybe Shaw will abandon Arris because of all of the problems, and switch to a Motorola 'Gateway' type unit. They seem to have moved away from Pace boxes, returning to a Motorola product line with the standard HD boxes.

Highly unlikely as there has been a rather large investment in the system. The Pace venture was largely just adding end user hardware to the existing system. This beast is a different animal altogether.

Since in reality there hasn't really been many problems, then it is unlikely they would abandon it.

Quick question, considering getting gateway, but have a loyalty to Motorola boxes.

Is there an eta on the next gen of gateway hardware? Or is Aries here for the foreseeable future?

If there won't be a hardware change by the end of the summer I won't wait and will buy an Aries.

good one. I blew chocolate milk out my nose laughing at that.

I have no factual data, and I am purely speculating here but in my mind it's too early for new hardware. The current stuff is only 6-8 months old I believe.

Frankly, I'll be rather pissed if they do come out with something new soon. I'll be sure they hear about it to! I just spent $400 on this stuff!

I jumped in late to the party so to speak with the Pace/Motorola hardware. I bought the Pace, just to realize too late it was already outdated when I bought it. (Shame on me for not researching places like here first.) So I thought I'd get in early this time. I really hope I do not regret it. I did read up hear first this time. I decided I could probably live with most of what I read about the Arris system. Sure enough, it annoys me how sluggish it can be at time and the poor UI design as well as the occasional signal loss, but the 6 tuners makes up for it all, as long as they do indeed keep updating and improving on what is there. (Knowing the button shortcuts is a bit of a relief. Clear twice deletes PVR recordings, Rec twice records current program, or program highlighted in guide.) I'm holding out hope in the end they will sort out most issues. I hope. I do not want a repeat of my Pace ordeal.

I sit here curious myself as to the true details. Hopefully someone can speak of it officially. Please?

The only reason for a new hardware is that the current hardware cannot handle the current requirements effortlessly. Let see how good is the new firmware.

Newer hardware might include a bigger internal hard drive on the Gateway and an IR receiver port on the Portal. Jetranger has mentioned elsewhere having seen non-working mockups of possible future Portal designs.

Of course new hardware might also be missing a few features, say a Portal that only provides an HDMI output and none of the now-legacy outputs like composite or component. This is happening on TVs, computers and other devices - features that are here today and gone tomorrow, or rather were here yesterday and are gone today.

I heard tonight from a Shaw installer - new version is coming. No details - but he personally is going to wait for the new one.

For the record, I didn't say I had 'seen' the next version but that 'the boxes had made the rounds' at Shaw. I heard this from a source there. There is no doubt a second version of the hardware will eventually(no idea how long this could take) follow, along with likely a third and fourth and so on. It comes down to timing and units sold, I believe. We will have to wait to find out what comes next but I would imagine it will be 'bigger and better' than that which preceded it but that it also won't be out before enough units have been sold of the original version for ARRIS to have at least broken even on their initial investment in the technology.

I don't mind new hardware eventually, just not within months of my purchasing their currently 6-8 month old tech.

Only reason I could afford this one was because I sold my second TV that I had bought in better times.

I would hope there is some sort of "buy back/trade in" option when they do. It would be nice to recoup a bit of my investment should I "have to have" something the newer box may have.

Because I owned the Pace box originally, there was no such offer. I could have swapped a Motorola box for a Portal had I bought one of those, but I didn't.

Sorry, Jetranger. I should have checked the original posting, instead of relying on an obviously faulty memory, before quoting you.

GamerGuy, according to Shaw Champ, the Pace PVRs were eligible for trade (http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/showpost.php?p=1255442&postcount=149). Perhaps they still are.
