Question: should I seriously consider an articulating mount or just go with the regular tilt? Any recommendation on which model and where to buy?

I just bought a 55" Panasonic Plasma which I will mount above the fireplace (I know, I know.......but that it where I need to install it). I read on the web that an articulating mount is handy for getting rear access to the TV for adding cables after installed on the wall.

A local electronics store said that the weight will be too great and the torque when extended will cause problems, "do I really know if the 2x4 studs are strong enough since it above the fireplace, the mount may rip out of the wall, are the studs properly supported, etc, etc."

Thanks.

I wouldn't trust any articulating mounts for a 55 inch plasma. Way too much weight IMHO. I have a 50 inch plasma and a tilting mount and there is lots of space for adding wires without too much problem. I bought my mount at mono price and it is very sturdy. This is my second mount from them for 2 plasmas.
