Steven Soderbergh continues his trend of unconventional casting by putting MMA fighter Gina Carano in the lead role. She plays a mercenary who often picks up contracts for branches of the U.S. government. After a rescue mission things in her life start going... haywire.

The direction is top-notch, as one would expect from a Soderbergh production. The action is also really good, as no stunt doubles are needed for Gina's scenes. As an actress she doesn't have a lot of range, so the drama is wisely kept to a minimum. Her surrounding cast is impressive: Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and Michael Fassbender among others.

The stiff acting wasn't enough to keep me from really enjoying the movie. Haywire is a pretty decent action flick, and the kick-ass female lead might make it more appealing for women who normally don't dig that genre.
