Maybe DH members need a secret handshake or something... Maybe a set of antennae on our heads :-)???

@ShawJohn, did you see my suggestion about ongoing negotiations for new channels being listed in your Cable Pages?

Just knowing if you are in pursuit of something would be insightful...

@Whitecapsfan - I bet you that same lady bought up all 500 portals that Shaw must have had in stock in Victoria in order to support this event.

I might have felt a little better if Shaw had said that they had made a mistake and for your inconvenience here is a couple of free VOD movies.

I think it is pretty obvious how most people found out about the sale.

I'll give some credit to this forum, but I would wager to guess that more people learned about the Secret Sale through the ubiquitous Facebook, with about a zillion members including grandma and your pet hamster. I have to admit, however, that I personally don't have a Facebook account, or a Twitter account, or a tablet or a smartphone. There was a time when I had to have the latest of everything, but I've sort of gone in the opposite direction now--excluding the newfangled Gateway, of course.

And newspaper ads, even full page ads, aren't an effective means of communication anymore. My daughter reminds me all the time that her generation doesn't read the paper (that is 30 and under) and that it is only "old fogies" that are keeping them alive.

It's kind of ironic that I didn't actually see those Secret Sale ads in the traditional hard copies (you know, they're like giant apps made of paper). I read the digital replicas of the Province and Vancouver Sun via PressDisplay (http://www.pressdisplay.com/), only one of the coolest resources on all the Interwebs. (If anyone's interested, your local public library probably subscribes to PressDisplay and library card holders can access it for free via the library's website. That's the only reason I have a public library card.)

Granted that facebook is enormously popular but I did monitor their facebook page on the weekend and there was very little discussion about the sale while it was going on so I don't know how many of their facebook likes would have been aware of it. And I know there was no mention of it on their twitter account at all.

And don't forget that places like facebook are much more representative of the general population while dedicated forums such as this tend to the techie and early adopter end of the spectrum much more. For targeted groups this is a more cost effective method.

But going forward, I have no doubt these will become major means of communication. But Shaw doesn't seem to understand communication very well so it may be awhile before they get into the 21st century.

Hmm.. there were 360 prizes over 2 days. 5 or 6 were won by members here - that we know of. Not a large number.

Shaw newspaper ad was targeted at the new subscribers because their ad does not mentioned any equipment sale. The main purpose of this promotion is to get new subscribers using free lifetime rental.

From the recently Shaw promotions, members here have been very vocal on being left out. The secret sale on this forum is mainly targeted at us only. As newfbc pointed out, only a very small number of the prizes went to members. Most of them went to the new subscribers.

If they were only targeting new subscribers, they should have posted over on the Telus thread. ;)

I wouldn't say you could say 'most of the prizes went to new subscribers', just that more went to non-DHC members. Only Shaw will know how many prizes were won by new versus existing subscribers.

The weird thing is that most of the people at the sale location I attended were there for the hardware purchase / upgrade, which was only advertised here and in the comments on the Facebook thread as far as I know.

I think this goes to show that these two locations and word of mouth were far more effective at attracting people (if not the desired new customers) than all of the traditional advertising.

I went online chat to check my appointment for tomorrow gateway install. It was cancelled because of out of stock and no one called me to reschedule. Let hope for the best on my next appointment Sunday Jan 8th.

I've had two appointments cancelled in the past two weeks by Shaw for a Gateway install. But it actually worked out in my favour as I was able to cancel and get in on the Secret sale saving me $200.

Has anyone in Calgary recieved a call to book an install for the Gateway since the sale? I'm not in any particular hurry but without any confirmed install date and only a debit receipt to prove my purchase it makes me a little nervous to hear people in BC getting install dates at the sale (even if they were cancelled.)

I didn't hear back after the sale in Calgary, even though the lady at the sale said she would call me back with an install date the same day. I just went on the online chat, they could see the notes on my account, and they gave me an install date.

If it helps, my install date is Jan. 7

Yes. I had a call on my answering machine before I got home on Jan.1. Install is set for Jan.5

I actually got 2 calls on the same day asking about an install booking. I asked the second caller if there was a problem with the booking that had been made during the earlier call but she was able to check quickly and told me 'no, everything looks good.'

That install was for today and the installer just left. No problem encountered activating the two extra Portals but it took a half dozen 'hits' and a power cycle before the 3400 would get all the channels I have. All is good now.

@Cellarboy - they should be able to see your transaction on your account, they did with mine when I confirmed the date, etc... I guess as long as it shows there you just have to book your appointment...

There are at least 4 postings on Vancouver Craigslist offering the "unwanted lucky draw prize" Sharp LCD tv. Is $275 a good deal?

I believe they are $299 at FS, plus taxes, so it's up to you if you think it's a good deal or not. I'd offer them less and see what they say.
