: "Official" 2012 Apocalypse Update Thread
Since we are well on our way into 2012 I figured we needed a new thread to chronicle the news, events and people's reactions as they occur this year. There has been plenty of media coverage so far and I expect all the major networks and press will be pull be pulling out all the stops.
On the eve of 21 December 2012 I can already see an intrepid CBS reporter, with camera crew in tow, travelling to the deep jungles of Honduras to talk to the locals and watch for signs of the impending Armageddon.
Here is a summary for those living under a rock the last decade.

DSgamby 2012-01-02, 12:56 PM If the Leafs win the Cup. We know the Apocalypse is near. LOL
PokerFace 2012-01-02, 04:09 PM Yes, 2012 will bombard us with even more media coverage about the end of the world.
I predict that even the DVD format will survive beyond 2012 and that there will also be a few more musicians added to the 27 Club, even though the deaths of those 27-year-old musicians are apparently only related by "coincidence."

NBC cancelled Earth 2 in 1995, after just one season due to falling ratings.
However, if the ratings for our Earth can remain steady (and also avoid falling meteors, planets and other debris), at least one of the major networks will surely renew it.
Before I panic, I'm going to wait to see what happens to the Denver Broncos. If Tim Tebow can't lead Denver to a Super Bowl win this year, that's when I will begin to get worried that our Earth might indeed be cancelled.

Contrary to what many believed, year 2012 will not mark the end of the world but will just be a start of a new calendar, according to Mayan timekeeper.
But Mayan expert Leonzo Barreno, of Saskatchewan, Canada, has asserted that the 'apocalypse' concept is a false interpretation of the Long Count calendar.
The University of Regina journalism professor said Mayan elders told him that December 21 this year simply marks the beginning of a new calendar.
Barreno, who immigrated to Canada from Guatemala 23 years ago, was trained by Mayan elders to read the calendars.

The Maya recorded that on Dec. 21, 2012 the 13th baktun will end. Bolon Yokte', a god of transition associated with the ending of time periods, will witness the ceremonies conducted on this day and will be "invested," presumably by the descendants of the king, Bahlam Ahaw. Based upon the rituals of contemporary Maya, scholars interpret this passage to mean that the future king of Tortuguero would have brought out an effigy of the god, Bolon Yokte', dressed it in ritual clothing and placed it on display to watch the ceremonies conducted in honour of the end of the 13th baktun.
Ironically, what is missing from this passage is any mention of the end of the world. There is no catastrophe predicted and no rise of a new world order foretold.
Further, the Maya predict other events far into the future, well beyond 2012.
So while the Maya certainly envisioned the 13th baktun ending, just as we anticipate that the third millennium will end on Dec. 31, 2999, they in no way thought their world would end.
And this is what is so interesting about the 2012 prophecy. It is our culture that is captivated with apocalyptic predictions of all sorts, religious, political, economic, and environmental, and we invented this doomsday scenario, not the ancient Maya.

http://www.endoftheworld2012.net/mayancalendar2012.htm
With Mayan mythology teaching that our sun is a god and the Milky Way is the gateway to life and death, the Mayans concluded that this intersection in the past must have been the moment of creation. Mayan hieroglyphs seem to indicate that they believed the next intersection in 2012 would be some sort of end and a new beginning of a cycle.
The Mayans also believed that the blood of human sacrifices was what powered the sun and gave it life.
All the so-called “Mayan prophecies of 2012” are nothing more than wildly speculative extrapolations, which are based on the yet uncertain interpretations by scholars of Mayan hieroglyphs. However, the truth is that apart from the astrological convergence, there is little indication that the Mayans prophesied anything specific regarding the events of this distant future. The Mayans were not prophets; they were not even able to predict their own cultural extinction. They were great mathematicians and accomplished sky watchers, but they were also a brutally violent tribal people with a primitive understanding of natural phenomena, subscribing to archaic beliefs and the barbaric practices of blood-letting and human sacrifice.

[Ten End of the World Predictions]
PokerFace 2012-01-02, 04:39 PM The End of the World as I Know It:
(1) North America will mysteriously disappear on January 3, 2012 (at 11.30pm ET), a mere three hours after the airing of the ABC TV series, Work It. Following the disappearance of North America, the rest of the World will mysteriously disappear after Work It is uploaded to the Internet on January 4 (yes, even China won't be immune to the deadly "Work It worm").
Extra Note: An IGN website reviewer gave the pilot episode of Work It a score of "0", the first review since 1998 from the company to get a score of "0" (the other "0" was given to the N64 videogame Olympic Hockey Nagano '98).

[Work It review by IGN: Welcome to the absolute end of civilization.]
(2) On March 15, 2012 (The Ides of March), Tim Tebow will be traded to the Toronto Argonauts for a prayer to be named later. Doug Flutie (NOT related to The Pied Piper of Hamilton) will sense the coming of the Apocalypse and then attempt to lead the Lions, Bears, Buffalo, Patriots, Generals, Argonauts, Rats, Children and Stampeder to safety, simply by playing his magical flute. Flutie later gets "charged" with indecent exposure and watches helplessly behind bars as the World goes up in flames.

(3) The World will end on March 1, 2021, shortly after Justin Bieber dies of "Bieber Fever," a disease he courageously battled for 27 years. The 27 Club (owned by Jim Carrey, star of the film: The Number 23), decides to play the infectious song, "Baby," to honour Justin Bieber as our Earth implodes ... finally destroyed by the incurable disease known as "Bieber Fever."

December 21, 2012 - disaster will strike the planet. The world, as we know it, will end. That is what many people, millions of web sites and international doomsday entrepreneurs predict. Written, produced and directed by award-winning documentarian Cynthia Banks, Apocalypse 2012 presents the leaders, chroniclers, debunkers and the businessmen of this wide-spread certainty of a global cataclysm.

NB Josh 2012-01-07, 01:26 AM Don't know if anyone else has noticed, but on the CBS show "Person of Interest", the timeline they show when jumping back and forth in time ends at 2012. I figure it isn't an accident considering its a JJ Abrams show.

Francois Caron 2012-01-13, 07:24 AM I should put a doomsday countdown clock on my Web site that says "The world will end in X days, X hours, X minutes and X seconds. Or not." :)

And just as I say that, it seems they have changed it for the new episodes in 2012. Now the timeline goes to 2015.

With less than 100 days left before the end I figured a 'thread bump' was in order. I would hate for anyone to be unprepared for the 'impending ending'.
So what are you guy and gals doing December 21st? I am having a big party at my place (that part is real). With any luck I will hook-up with some impossibly smart, hot and single gal and together, and against all odds, we will survive and start re-populating the earth. :p
PS: Don't bother buying Christmas presents this year. :D
dm_4u 2012-10-02, 09:36 AM Hmmm...either way...December 22nd will be quite the day at your local Mall.
I can just picture the ads now.
