gworg, I watch and record all the time and don't have a problem. What TV and input are you using?

I have a 50" Samsung DLP and I use DVI. Since Samsung in theory is 720P by default that is what I have it set to. I used to use 1080i but based on info on this forum I switched. Since I'm using DVI and I'm on HD these settings strike me as being irrelevant but much of this started when I went to 720P

When I am watching a pre-recrorded show that needs a security pin (anything that is not kid oriented in my house) the box wants me to put the security code at the top of the hour and usually at the half hour as well. This is annoying. Is this a bug?

gworg, it sure sounds like a syncing issue. Or maybe a problem with HDCP when you get snow. Not 100% sure. I have heard of syncing issues with the Samsung DLP. Search this forum because I'm sure I read it here and maybe check AVSForum.

I just got off the phone with Shaw technical service ...

The person I spoke to was very knowledgeable ... he has his own HD PVR at home.

The question I asked ... can I attach any hard drive to via the firewire to increase the recording time.

No. The firewire has to get to recognize the drive ... we have to wait for Motorola to release a drive. HOWEVER, you can do what this technician did ... attach a DVHS recorder. He recommended using Fuji tapes for most programming (max 2 hours). For longer movies like LOTR you will need the longer tapes which cost $20+. Shaw has one up on all the satellite providers including the American ones (like the Dish Network)... you cannot attach a DVHS recorder to record HDTV.

Other upcoming developments ... they are increasing the bandwidth which will allow them to add more HDTV channels ... plan on 3 by the end of the year.

Also, all channels above 50 (if I remember correctly) will be going digital ... so, the PQ will then be the same as satellite.

All sounds good!

Shaw has the "flags" enabled on some STBs in some areas. This will limit the recording you can do outside the STB via firewire to D-VHS or HTPC. See the Digital Home FAQ on "Recording HD".

The tech said that he recorded LOTR on DVHS via the firewire (Greater Vancouver).

I personally have never seen a program with the 5c flag set to anything other than 0.

Vancouver has been spared (so far). Other sites have not. There are plenty of threads on the subject. You'll note that my post did not say all of Shaw sites were affected (yet)

Although this is possible for 5C=1 if you record directly to the D-VHS, it may not be possible for example to record a programme onto the 6208 and then transfer it to the D-VHS, because that would then be a copy of a copy.

What I was trying to do is warn people about the fact that Recording HD cannot be done "freely" and even if it is possible today, it may not be "tomorrow" so don't rush out to get an HTPC or D-VHS, assuming you'll be able to record all HD programming.

This tech indicated that he has recorded from the 6208 hard drive.

I understand your concern and warning, but people have been making personal recordings off the airways for over 50 years, beginning with reel-to-reel tape recorders and cassette recorders, then VCR's and now HD VCR's and HD DVD recorders (in Japan).

The industry will never be able to stop it. They tried and lost with the famous Betamax case. And they will lose again. They may temporarily win ... but will never stop it. And we have people with money on our side, like Mark Cuban who sells D-VHS without copy protection and ENCOURAGES people to make copies for their own person use ... but warns not to try to sell them.

I strongly believe it is our right to make these recordings and the courts will uphold that right. Just because it is HD make no difference.

DVD's are still going to sell whether personal recordings are allowed or not. I have a recording of LOTR: ROTK on my 6208 (which I may or may not be able to copy to D-VHS), but I still plan to buy a DVD copy ... for the extended version, for a glitch free version and for the extras. And millions of others will also do so for those reasons and others.

The answer is to continue to allow copying for personal use and prosecute to the full extent of the law anyone who tries to boot leg copies.

Bob, if that's what you believe, fine, but this time it's a bit different. If you think this latest copy protection scheme is going to be as easy to break as macrovision, you've got another think coming.

Some of the programmes (PPV) won't even record onto the DVRs. They allow you a 60 minute time-shift, but no actual recording. Once 5C is up and running properly, there may be some "hackers" that'll be able to record, but the average person will not be able to spend $50 for a "video stabilizer" that'll work on HD.

The cable STBs will "follow" the protocols. You'll be able to make a copy of a copy of OTA-type stuff, but you won't be able to make a copy of a copy of anything else (like premium programming).

That "win in the courts" you're looking for may be a long ways off.

That "win in the courts" you're looking for may be a long ways off.

It may not be as far of as one may think... The EFF has been very vocal in these areas and we, as consumers, will one day have our day.. so to speak.

Eventually, a challenge will make it to the Supreme Court and they will rule based on precendent and will overturn FCC regulation or govt legislation in the USA (where this IS coming from).

In Canada it's only a matter of time to where we find that our rules regarding fair use (see our music industry for an extrapolation) are followed in this area to their fullist.

You can only deny my fundemental rights in this area for so long and eventually things come around to where the should be.. they always do..

Your "rights" have not been trampled.

1. You're still able to record any programme (except PPV) once, allowing you to "timeshift" the programme or watch it as many times as you like. (OTA-type programmes can even be copied as many times as you like)

2. You cannot record PPV, that's why it's called Pay Per View not "pay to buy".

3. The only thing you're being denied is to make a copy of a copy. A copy of a copy has always been "illegal" under copyright law.

The latest case against 321 Studios may interest many of you...

I've had the 6208 for about a week.. I find the remote a little unresponsive, and it's difficult getting used to the increase in the time it takes to change channels. I'm prolly gonna return it and wait for the 6412/16.

On a side note, I'm in Vancouver, I bought my 6408 at FS for $450 plus taxes.. if anyone wants to take it off my hands before I return it in the next few days, for what I paid, let me know. Future Shop receipt included.

The channel changes on my shaw hd dvr are quite fast ...even on hd, I guess it's all relative. Also I am able to record ppv to the dvr(recorded mean girls the other night...watched a bit of it). So 57 is saying when it's all implimented as planned.

I have to say that since the firmware upgrade I haven't had a spontaneous reset. How about everyone else who was experiencing this?

I still have the problem with a phantom recording on my list of recordings that's taking up 15% of my hard drive but I can't delete it. Its up to second level TSR's. We'll see what happens.

Very new to 6208
Hookup went well after getting a CSR on the phone the day after I bought it... apparently "repair CSRs" can't input the GI number from the box... they can activate a box present on your account they say they can't add the box. The CSR that got me up and running said something like B&llSh$t they were just too dam^ lazy... HER I believe...

It worked like a charm right out of the box and even recorded a Christmas Carol with Kelsey Grammar as Scrooge... the program guide and recording description say that it was Desperate Houswives... but I started watching the first couple of minutes and it's Scrooge alright.... synopsis.... program guide can't be trusted.

Bought the unit for 418 plus tax at Visions... my apologies to anyone who paid more and couldn't get Shaw to at least credit in programming credits...

Any opinion on the quality of the component cable supplied with the box? 57 maybe? I know that you seem to have a plethera of knowledge on this HDTV thing... those cables are all I'm using right now, although I think I'm gonna have to crimp the ends a bit, they seem to slide off the box and tv at the slightest tug....

Good day HDTV is here!!!

I'm not familiar with the cables that come with the Motorola box. If they're slipping off, you may wish to consider a different/better set.

Did you price match to get that price at Visions or what?

I am still within my price protection window at LD..
