Okay, I had a more technically qualified technician from Shaw this time come by. Spoke to him at length about the issues of One Moment Please on the HD channels and with the 20-30 second delay/pause on Playboy.

He phoned back to HDTV support at the head end and verified that they do get these problems there as well on 6208's and its a known issue already addressed with Motorola. Unfortunately, there is no known time frame for a fix of the firmware.

Mostly what we expected but at least they've admitted it to me now instead of saying I need to buy an emi/rfi filtered power bar (CSR's suggestion).

Here's Motorola's official response to my "conflicting remotes" problem...It's just one step above a piece of duct tape....

"I'm sorry there isn't a way to separate the remote signals so one remote doesn't affect the other machine, but there is a very low tech solution though. Get a few small dots of velco and attach to opaque paper, cardboard, plastic cut to fit front window of box so you can block the IR detection. It's low tech, but it it's easy to pull it off and stick it on when you want to use both boxes."

I was hoping for something a little more technical!

Woody...If you have a Pronto you can also use the following for IR Code for the Commecial Skip.

Is anyone else having this problem?

Most times I hit fast forward (more than once) on a recorded program I get the "delete / keep" recording screen. If I click "keep" it jumps back to the start.

Aqueduct:
Which Advanced Code list did you use off hifi-remote.com to program the Motorola 6208?

Thanks for the info on how to program the remote! If only I saw your post earlier I might have saved myself the $ on buying a JP1 remote.

By the way, if you use the instruction on hifi-remote.com and delete an advanced code, do you still retain the original code?
I don't want to accidentally erase a code that Shaw will use in the future and be unable to recover from it.

I used the code list for Cable 0476, which gets described as: "Advanced Codes for cbl_0476, General Instruments Cable Box".

I found code 0476 in the archive section of the website, under "Cable Remotes", the Atlas is there, which gives you further information on programming the remote in general (mostly user manual stuff).

I have only used the advanced codes for Skip, Day+, and Day-, so can't speak to the rest. You can test codes out by:

Press the device key
Press SETUP (don't hold it)
Enter the 3 digit code
Check for a response from your equipment

I believe deleting a newly assigned code does not return to the original code. However, in case of emergency, you should be able to find the original code somewhere and re-assign it (or reapply the base device code to the device button?). I'm not sure it's foolproof, but my "rule of thumb" has been to test/press the button I want to assign to. If it gets no response/indicator from the box, I think it's "unassigned" (i.e. no code). Some buttons prompt a response (remote indicator on the 6208) but don't seem to do anything. These might be buttons for functionality that is not enabled, and assigning a new code would overwrite it.

Play around at your own risk. (But, more importantly, have fun!)

aqueduct, thanks for the info.

I haven't tried it yet, but I will experiment later.

For those that have trouble finding the link... http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?cbl_0476

If I am bored I will test out some of these codes and see if they are accurate.

Robobob, thanks for the Pronto code anyways but I already had it.

Note that it has been stated elsewhere on this forum (in the "6208 does have a commercial skip function" thread by "6208 Ill Wait" - link: http://www.digitalhomecanada.com/forum/showthread.php?t=15439&page=2) that the original device code as programmed on the packaged Atlas remote is for CBL 1376.

I don't know how this differs from the obviously older 0476 code listed at hifi-remote. Maybe someone with remote/jp1 knowledge will fill us in. The codes for 0476 seem to work (at least the ones I've tested).

For now, I prefer the "key-in" method for assigning codes to my Atlas remote - saves me from spending hours (or is that months?) learning jp1.

But does the above indicate that I can restore the original CBL functionality of the remote by assigning 1376 to the CBL device on the Atlas? This would free us up to play around with the 0476 codes.

(someone let me know if we're out of topic, or if these threads should be moved/combined.)

Also, for LD500, my understanding is that the Atlas is a jp1 remote. At least it has the jp1 connector in the battery compartment. Buying a new, cool remote never hurts though, and I would like to mess around with jp1 if I had the time.

To follow up on my previous post regarding my first week with the 6208...

The recordings that appeared in my "Future Recordings" list, that I never set or had anything to do with, and that I could not delete, disappeared as their day passed. They did no harm.

Still have large delays switching to HD channels or recordings.

However, I now have 5 movies (digital from Movie Central) and 1-hour of HD programming (I swear it's not Dr. Phil) on the HDD - 28% full.

Cool.

I don't know how this differs from the obviously older 0476 code listed at hifi-remote. Maybe someone with remote/jp1 knowledge will fill us in. The codes for 0476 seem to work (at least the ones I've tested).

1376 is what my SHAW one came with, but the codes of 0476 were also in there.

Here is the differences (Sorry, HTML makes it look bad)

KEY________0476_________1376
---------------------------------------
Live______NOT MAPD______177 Live
Replay____NOT MAPD______179 Replay
PIP Move__NOT MAPD______081 PPV
PIP Swap__NOT MAPD______048 Help (*)
LIST______NOT MAPD______175 "L" Feature
PLAY_____178 PLAY________204 Reserved-5
STOP_____174 STOP_______211 Reserved-2
* Key_____081 PPV________034 "O" Feature

Before now I had never seen the Advanced Codes site http://www.hifi-remote.com/cgi-bin2/ueic.cgi?cbl_0476...

The PIP Move and PIP Swap keys are added in the 1376 code to allow them to be used on the MACRO keys for Help and PPV accordingly.

Now I have some other codes to try out :) Dont know why the 1376 PLAY and STOP are using reserved codes.... interesting.

I think what I will do is just make an upgrade file with all the unknown keys, and see what happens :)

For now, I prefer the "key-in" method for assigning codes to my Atlas remote - saves me from spending hours (or is that months?) learning jp1.

JP1 is not easy, but it is really powerful. Not for the faint of heart, and that is why I posted the bare minimum of what you required to get the ball rolling. (that is before I learned about the 994 code!)

But does the above indicate that I can restore the original CBL functionality of the remote by assigning 1376 to the CBL device on the Atlas? This would free us up to play around with the 0476 codes.

Thats the idea yes. I cant think of any reason why someone would want to play around with the 0476 codes anyways, as they seem to be missing important features. Just make sure you change the remote to 0476 before you start playing around ;)

I used Aqueduct's instructions and programmed in the 30 second skip function onto the PIP Channel + key on the Atlas remote.
(my JP1 cable didn't arrive yet)

Today I wanted to program in the Day+/- keys but can't find the codes.
When I went to the 0476 codes on hifi-remotes.com, it doesn't show any Day+/- codes in the PVR section (this is the section showing 173 as the Skip code).

The only Day Minus and Plus codes are shown at the top of that page (codes are 174 and 178). However, I'm worried that those aren't the right codes since 173 is listed as "N" in that section (not Commercial Skip).

Aqueduct: What codes did you use for Channel Minus and Plus?

thanks

174 (day-) and 178 (day+) work. That's what I used.

You can always simply test codes out, by pushing the device button (CBL in this case), then pushing Setup (don't hold), then enter the code via the numeric keypad (178 for day+, as an example). If the device responds as expected, the code is valid and can be assigned to an acceptable key. There is minimal risk this way, as 'testing' does not overwrite any keys, or permanently change the remote in any way.

It's interesting about the two descriptions for code 173. This could be a result of the 0476 and 1376 discrepancies (maybe?).

I currently have Commerical Skip programmed to the PIP Channel + button on the Atlas remote. I want to assign Day+ to that button instead.
Can I just enter it 'on top of' the Commercial Skip programming or do I need to do some different procedure first?

THANKS! The commercial skip works great by the way, it's almost instantaneous.

Just assign day+ to the button and it will overwrite the commercial skip. You can then assign skip to another button.

I had mine for a few weeks, but returned it a while back. It just seemed way too buggy. At the same time though, I miss it. I've actually considered buying it again.
One thing that bugged me about it (there were many actually), was that if you were watching a recording and started rewinding to go back to the beginning, it would never rewind all the way back. It would stop and start playing a couple of minutes in. Then I'd hit rewind again, and it would go back a bit further, but never back to the beginning. I'd repeat the process a few times. I know you can go into a different menu and just start it from the beginning, but there were many times that I just wanted to rewind back and never could all the way.
Anyone else experience this?

If you read my earlier posts, there were many other reasons why I like the express vu pvr better.

Bottom line though, I do miss, and am considering getting it again, (the commercial skip issue was one huge complaint and seems to be rectified by simply typing in some numbers on the remote), should I, or should I just wait???
thanks

I've never had a problem with rewind. My recorded programs seem to rewind to the beginning of the recording without issue, then start playing - also with no problem.

My biggest issue right now is the lag time when tuning to HD content - whether it's recorded or live. It is fairly annoying to look at a black screen for up to 3 minutes (I know there is a workaround for the live content - audio setup - but haven't found a workaround for recorded HD content).

Other current issues:

The box interrupted 1 recording today while I was on the golf course, so the program is incomplete (again, I swear it wasn't Dr. Phil!)

Two recordings this week ended during the final moments of the show. For example, I missed the verdict for the Law and Order season opener (if someone can work it into a relevant post, I'd love to hear it). I'm not sure why this happened. Perhaps the show timings were off. Many of the shows I record are back to back and not on the same channel (ruling out the option of extending the recordings), so I hope the system does not cut out prematurely to get to the next recording.

To address the post above ("should I buy it, or wait"), I am very happy with the purchase. It has changed the way I watch TV. The problem before the purchase was catching the "no questions asked" favourite shows. Now, I record them, plus all of the "I wish I could watch" shows. With the PVR, the problem is now finding enough time during the week to watch the shows I recorded and get them off the hard drive (not enough space). I really do think it was worth it - and I think Shaw/Motorola will work out some of the bugs fairly soon. Did I mention I was an optimist??

Acqueduct- it's not on recording, it's, say if you were watching live tv for 10 minutes and you rewound it on the fastest speed, it doesn't go back to the beginning unless you slow down the rewind to R1, the first speed.
I don't know if I'm making any sense or not.
I was in a store today, and tried adding the skip feature to the * key, worked like a charm.

Has anybody else noticed that when you enter the info screen for a program the little clock icon is labelled incorrectly? It has the same text as the heart icon, "add this program to your favourites". It should say something like "show other times for this program."

Seems strange this software ever got out of production with an obvious error like that.

Hey Guys, I was having some problems with my 6208 box in the last two days so I called shaw & found out some interesting news. The first problem was with the box just shutting itself off & resetting. The shaw tech guy told me they believe it cause by pluging the box in to a extention cord or powerbar. I found this very interesting cause no one had ever mentioned that before, he said that the fixes the problem 95% of the time. The next problem I had was I went & made a recording for tommorrow & it put a duplicate entry in the future recording menu. I went to check what I had set to record, saw the duplicate entry & they to delete it. This just gave me a error message saying to call shaw with a error code NH. The shaw guy said this is another known issue that their waiting for a responds from motorola on. He also send the delay when tuning to a hd channel is related to the same software problem. The good news is he said they are expecting a anwser back from motorola & maybe a fix to this plus other issues. Aleast we know that they should have more anwsers in by the end of next week to fix some off these problems.

Mach3, I have also had my 6208 spontaneously reset itself. I had my 6208 replaced and it just did it for the first time on the new one tonight. And, I also saw that self-generated recording entry the night before.

The line about power is some piece of crap suggestion the CSR's are given. When I told that to the senior tech who came to my house he just laughed.
