PPV shows are blocked for recording...your only option was to record off the output using an external recorder...

Is this really true, now? It wasn't always in the past (albeit on other PVRs). I haven't purchased a lot of PPVs but never actually bought one I couldn't record and watch at my convenience. I haven't tried this in well over a year now, so it may all have changed.

I guess there are three possibilities:

All PPVs are now protected, on all PVR platforms.
Some PPVs are protected, some are not, on all PVR platforms
(can we tell before buying them which are, and which are not?)
All PPVs are protected on the Gateway platform only.

If recording all PPVs is impossible only on the Gateway then that could be a(nother) deterrent to switching to the Gateway, for those of us considering the switch.

@klernie0521, was it a movie (which is all I ever bought and recorded) or was it a special event, that you tried to record?

Has anyone else had, or not had, the same problem as klernie0521?

This is copyright dependent. Most PPV's are blocked from recording.

The Gateway system respects copyright protection that the other PVRs didn't' so this is one 'limitation' of the system. It's one of the issues that I have long been opposed to; not being able to record something I am paying for. Might be time to dig out my VCRs and tapes again. Isn't technology wonderful?

Do the 'trick view' functions, Pause, Skip, Rewind, Replay, Fast Forward, etc. work on a PPV? The Gateway Manual (http://www.shaw.ca/uploadedFiles/Gateway/downloads/Shaw_Gateway_Experience_FullUserGuide.pdf)says, on page 14, "Control your recorded or live program with the following buttons" and lists these, among others. It says basically the same thing again on page 23, Controlling Live TV. The Pay per View section, page 41, is silent on all this.

My assumption would be that the 'trick view' functions do work, to the limit of the buffer (about 30 minutes for SD and about 10 minutes for HD). So the cumulative limit for bathroom and other breaks during an HD PPV program with no commercials is about 10 minutes, since we cannot catch-up by speeding through commercials. Since we cannot record the whole thing on a Gateway, a larger buffer might have been nice.

^ I ordered the last UFC on Gateway PPV and was able to rewind most of it or keep it paused, just not record it. At the end of the show I was able to rewind (HD feed) just over 2hrs worth.

Wow! HD or SD?
