I just won a Gateway and a Portal.

I currently have one of the Arris PVRs from a couple of years ago.

Can I switch things over myself to install the new Portal/Gateway or do I have to book a tech to come over?

If I have to book .. say I book tomorrow (Sat Dec 10)... how long would it take a tech to come install the gateway/portal on average?

thanks

Congrats on your win!

My daughter is having hers installed today - 2 weeks since signup.
Mine gets installed next Sunday - again about 2 weeks since signup.
The lady my wife spoke to siad to expect the tech to be here for 5-6 hours, but most threads here have indicated much less time. My house has all the cabling and wiring already in place, which I'm sure is the norm. I bet the 5-6 hour estimate is worst case scenario.

Definitely a worse case scenario. It does vary from house to house depending on what needs to be done.

Wow, how did you manage to do that? Where was the contest?
EDIT: I found the answer in your other post. Congratulations.

Do you mean a Pace PVR as I don't believe Shaw has ever offered another Arris box before this one?

You will have to book an install and they will be able to tell you when it will be when you call Shaw, as previously stated.

Just a quick question. Is there a way to program one of the extra buttons on the Harmony (the red, green, yellow or blue) to get it to make the Shaw Gateway do a 5 minute skip?

I dont want to make my actual "skip" button do a 5 minute skip...i want that button to do the 30 second skip.

Any thoughts?

thanks

Sadly, no. The skip length is programmed into the command function rather than the actual command. I agree it would be nice to have the option of more skip durations but since the standard remote is not programmable, I guess they figured we'd be 'happy' with the couple of options they gave us.

so can the portals be used to extend a home wifi network yet?

if not any idea when?

I need to figure out how I want everything installed and where. Am I correct in understanding that I can have the gateway unit and internet modem installed at the same wall outlet? Would they install a wall jack with two coaxial nodes on it?

Not yet but maybe in the next full code release which will hopefully come early in the new year.

FenderF4i: The answer is they will do whatever works best given the circumstances for your situation. I would imagine they would just use a two way splitter from the wall outlet but without knowing all the parameters of your home wiring, it's impossible to tell. There is a lot of good info in the original Gateway thread about how the installs typically go so I would suggest giving it a read through.

Would they install a wall jack with two coaxial nodes on it?It is best to have the Gateway box installed in a remote location (where the cable entry panel is if possible). I have mine installed on the garage wall next to the cable entry box, where I have my Internet setup. Early (I hope) in the New Year we will plug our Internet modem directly into the Gateway and use it as a router.

So I won 1 gateway and 1 portal last night at a charity event I attended.

I open up the boxes and I am unsure if pieces are missing.

Gateway box = receiver + power cable

Portal = box + power cable + HDMI cable + 1 remote control

+ really small instruction booklets in each box

Is that what came in both of your boxes? Do batteries come with the remote? Does an HDMI cable come in your Gateway box? Neither came with mine and the boxes were opened... interesting..

@Bobafart congrats!
The Gateway unit itself just has Power Cord and Coax going to it. The Coax then feeds the Portal from which an HDMI cable be used to a TV or receiver. The remote should come with batteries. If instruction booklets are missing just check our website for them. Having a Gateway also means free install too, so a tech can check things over for you.

There were batteries with each remote/Portal I received and all previous Shaw remotes have come with batteries.

As for an HDMI cable with the Gateway, what would you do with it? There is no HDMI port on the Gateway so no HDMI cable is needed for it.

I would be a little disappointed there were no batteries but for the price you paid for it, I wouldn't complain.;)

EDIT: Looks like Shaw Champ posted while I was typing.

I've got an existing TV in the living room (with a 6414 that's going away) for serious home theater and TV viewing and a new TV in the den/office for news and sports while working on my computer. I am also getting Shaw home phone (needed in the Den/Office) and already have Broadbamd 50 which is not changing... SMC Modem is already in the Den.

My cable box is on the outside of the house with single but separate coax runs externally going into these two rooms via holes drilled in the siding at the required locations.

It seems I could ask the installer to put the the Gateway in:
1. The Living room
2. The Den or
3. A new location like the laundry/utility room (which is adjacent to the exterior mounted cable termination box)

What are the pros/cons of these three options?

Go with the Utility room, if you read the threads most complain of the noise generated by the Gateway and in the new year you will plug your broadband 50 modem directly into the Gateway enabling DLNA and making the Gateway a 4 port router as well.

What are the dimensions of the gateway box? I can't seem to find them anywhere online. I need to see if it will fit into my utility cabinet.
