: Shaw Gateway: Installation and setup discussion
mattbladez 2011-10-21, 02:48 PM Hey guys,
I had 2 channels that would occasionally pixelate/go off air.. and I figured out that at the entrance of my condo there was a 750 Mhz splitter, swapped for a 1GHz and no more problems!!
So if 750Mhz can pass 99% of the bandwidth going through (I also have internet and home phone).. I don't see the 1GHz rating ever being an issue.
Furnace 2011-10-22, 12:30 PM Hello Everyone,
Does anyone know if the IR on the Portal's are Single Band Frequency or Dual Bad Frequency?
I would like to setup my Portal away from my TV and want to use an IR Repeater to control it. I've searched the forum and I came up with nothing.
Thanks in advance!
rrcool 2011-10-29, 01:47 PM Can portals be moved? I have a three season sunroom where I watch quite a bit of TV from March to November. For the coldest months (Dec to Feb) I watch TV in the Master Bedroom. So I'm thinking of getting the Gateway plus 3 portals (living room and kids room permanent) as well as a SD receiver and one portal that I can swap back and forth as desired. Are the Moca filters movable with the portals? Can I run a SD receiver AFTER the Gateway? I don't really want to pay for a portal to watch the news for 15 minutes when I go to bed.
Jetranger 2011-10-29, 02:31 PM It will largely depend on how your home is wired with coax. If each room has a separate line that runs to a common distribution point then you should easily be able to do what you want. Swapping between the sunroom and your bedroom should be no problem. If you are not using the one outlet for a few months then you really should have a couple of splitters so you can swap them out when you are not using the extra outlet. MoCA filter/s should not need to be moved if the install is done correctly from the start. Legacy STBs should work inside the MoCA network according to Shaw.
cdncableguy 2011-10-30, 03:07 PM A 750 MHz splitter will still pass frequency over 750, just with a lot of loss. That is why channels can still work intermittently sometimes.
Trying to set up my harmony one:
Is it a PVR or digital cable box
Is it Moxi or Shaw Cable
Which Mod #
Thanx
shawguy 2011-10-30, 09:36 PM Hymi...According the "Shaw Gateway: Read this First" thread found here http://digitalhome.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=145360 it would appear there is a link for Harmony remotes in that thread... check there
Trying to set up Harmony
1. is the portal a pvr or a set top box
2. is it moxi or shaw cable
3. what model #
thanks
Jetranger 2011-10-31, 04:24 PM I just tried the following and it seems to be a good start:
Digital Set Top Box,
Shaw Cable,
MP2000.
This should get you a 'usable' remote and you can customize from there. I posted a pdf with my particular setup and at least one other member/user liked it so you might search for it here and check it out.
Edit: I see my pdf is in the link already suggested by shawguy. One small change I have made to my custom buttons is I changed the 'Zoom' in the upper right corner of the touch screen to a 'VOD' button. I didn't think I would use this originally but since the 'Exit' button is the same as 'Zoom', I changed it. This should work just fine now.
Legacy STBs should work inside the MoCA network according to Shaw
so if I understand correctly, if I have a 4 way splitter at the cable demarc box, a single MoCA filter would be installed on the drop side of the demarc, then on the inside I could happily mix Gateway/Portals and legacy tuners (both analog and digital) on any of the 4 cable runs? is that right?
and what about a cable modem? can it also exist inside the point where the MoCA filter is installed, or does it need to be on a separate feed from the rest of the MoCA/CATV runs?
sorry if these are dumb questions... I have Shaw TV, but Telus internet so I don't know anything about cable modems or where they'd get installed re: MoCA (thinking of Gateway system, plus possibly switching internet to Shaw)
Thanks for reply Jetranger----Harmony up & running.
One more question re TV setup
I have a Samsung 1080P plasma 3D
which settings do you reccommend
1080I
1080P 24hz
1080P 30hz
Shaw tech says 1080I
Thanks
Jetranger 2011-11-02, 01:29 AM 1080i is the recommended setting. All of these answers are in the original Gateway thread, just so you know. If you take the time to read through it, you will probably run across some info you may not have already thought of a question for yet.
Sonisame 2011-11-04, 12:38 PM Hi
I have two shaw PVR's and external e-sata mounted hard-drives with tons of recorded tv shows from last couple of years.
If I upgrade my system to Gateway and portals, is there a way(with Shaw technical support) to transfer or use my existing e-sata hard-drives with new Gateway? Or do I have to live with the fact that the I will lose all my recordings with this upgrade?

NoAhBoDy 2011-11-04, 04:40 PM @Sonisame: I went through this last week. I was told when I ordered my gateway that everything on the expander would carry across to the gateway (CSR checked with another person and also advised that in her case, when she switched her recordings came across) and when the installer came in, he advised that this was not the case. The expander had to be formatted. If not formatted, it would not be recognized. We tested and the only conclusion was to format.
I had my 1 TB expander plugged into an older 6416 III so I don't know if that makes any difference...
Either way, after I had to lose all my recordings I did call Shaw and they credited my account for my "pain".
cdncableguy 2011-11-04, 07:50 PM Definitely will lose all recordings when moving an expander. The expander is linked to the specific dct. So even if you swap out the 6416 for another 6416 you would lose all data on the expander.
Sonisame 2011-11-05, 02:51 PM Thanks NoAhBody and cdncableguy. I guess I will stick to my pvr's for another couple of yrs..

HARDRIVE 2011-11-06, 11:28 AM Gateway installed yesterday and harmony remote updated but question about remote, is there any way to get page up and down buttons for guide really miss that function from motorola. :(
NoAhBoDy 2011-11-06, 11:32 AM @HARDIVE: If you figure that one out, I'll give you a dollar! That's one of my beefs too...and the fact that there's no "Exit" button :)
Jetranger 2011-11-06, 11:34 AM The answer is in your instruction manual. If you can't find it, post again and I'll tell you the page number. It's also been posted on DHC many times.
NoAhBoDy 2011-11-06, 11:36 AM Which answer? I never received any manuals with my gateway...just a book with a few pages that my daughter decided to keep for herself :)
