Even Hi-def TV is only 720P, setting TV reception to 1080P is pointless, that being said I have mine set to 1080P 30hz and 480P on my Samsung UN60D8000 and I haven't noticed any issues with display SD or HD? If you are having issues using 1080P, by all means switch to 1080i if it improves your reception.

Try 1080P/30hz (higher refresh may help)

... but motion more jumpy.

Any thoughts? I was told by the tech to leave it at 1080i...but if my dispay supports, why not enable???

Because Shaw doesn't support 1080p yet. The problem you see is a direct result. 1080i or lower is recommended and you should also have only one resolution set.

How does the Gateway HD picture quality compare to Bell's HD PQ?

Thanks!
A couple of people have reported on this either in this thread or the original one. Have a read through at least the last dozen pages of the original thread and this one and you should find your answer.

Has anybody come across a solution for the P002 errors when accessing Video On Demand?

Thank you in advance.
I assume you are still having this issue? Have you called Shaw to see if they can troubleshoot from their end? They might be able to do something and, if not, they would send out a tech. I'm not entirely certain but I thought this was one of the items that was supposed to be fixed in the current code release. Is it happening on all Portals or just one, if you have more than one?

I've had the gateway & 2 portals for about 3 weeks now and since the update I've noted drop outs/glitches/pixilating as well as issues with PVR. I don't recall having them prior to the update. I'd say the menu is slower to respond as well.

I've also had the issue where the Gateway requires a reboot - never had that one either. Just today, I had the "lost connection" issue as well. That one was momentary, 2 seconds or so, but never had that either....

Seems my "upgrade" may have been a downgrade as my Gateway experience had been fine prior to it. I did have a need to reboot Gateway/portals the day after install but that was it.

Well my appointment for the tech to come out and see whats been going on with my system was today from 4-6pm; my wife got home at 1.45pm and found a note on the door from Shaw - sorry we missed you...:mad:

So I phoned back - nothing they can do - have it rescheduled for Friday morning now.....

Here's hoping!

So this is strange. i had x-factor recording tonight between 5pm and 7pm. the recording finished and was in my recordings. At 10pm i went to watch stand it was gone yet I did not delete it.

I checked the "cancelled and deleted" section in Options and saw that the recording had expired and was deleted. What the... how can this happen?

I have a 4tb drive attached and have only used 25% of my space.

I checked other shows and there are a few others that have expired and were deleted.

every show is set to delete only when space is needed

There are a couple of other posts on this error in the thread, but this seesm to be the most severe example of it - no guide avaialable past Fri 30th at 5PM!!!
Have recycled the gateway and portals several times - no benefit

Any ideas on how to get teh portal to redownload the full guide?

Thanks
Jeff

When watching my recordings last night, there was a great deal of pixelization, and tiny gaps (like you jumped forward a second or two).I saw it for the first time on things like NBC Evening News, The Mentalist.

Even Hi-def TV is only 720P720p is only one of the two HDTV resolutions, the other being 1080i.
Because Shaw doesn't support 1080p yet. The problem you see is a direct result. As long as your TV supports 1080p, there is no harm in setting it but there is no purpose either. As there are currently no 1080p programs coming through the Shaw system, as long as you have selected additional choices, the gateway will never attempt to use that output resolution.1080i or lower is recommended and you should also have only one resolution set. This is incorrect. Shaw Cable passes all TV programs through to its customers in the three standard native resolutions, as provided by its suppliers:

480i (SDTV)
720p (HDTV - ABC, CBC, ESPN, FOX, BIG10, etc.)
1080i (HDTV - AMC, CBS, CNN, CTV, GLOBAL, NBC, PBS, etc.)

If your TV supports those resolutions, you can select one or all.

There are pros and cons involved though and it all has to to with whether or not the scaling circuitry in the Arris (also incl. Motorola/Pace) equipment is better that the scaling circuitry in your TV.

The issue is that when a digital image is rescaled, distortion and artifacts are introduced. (Information Theory 101). So the idea is to minimized the number of times the image is rescaled.

With the Shaw equipment, these are your choices:

If you select only one of 480i, 720p or 1080i then the Arris gear will rescale all of the incoming video signals to the setting you chose. One small side benefit will be that when you change channels from, for example, ABC-HD (720p) to CBS-HD (1080i) the TV will not have to resyncronize and the channel change is instant.

Alternatively, if you select all three of 480i, 720p or 1080i then the Arris gear will simply pass all of the incoming video signals to your TV without rescaling them. Those various incoming signals will be recognized and your TV will rescale them to it's internal "native" resolution automatically. The small con is that when you change channels from, again for example, ABC-HD (720p) to CBS-HD (1080i) the TV must resyncronize and the image blanks for a fraction of a second during the channel change.

In my case, my projector has considerably better circuitry than the Arris box so I do the latter.

http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/images/icons/icon4.gif For people using bastard resolution "720p" TVs, there is a real benefit to doing as I do - selecting all three resolutions on the Arris box:

A "real" 720p TV will have a native resolution of 1280x720 pixels - exactly the same as a 720p video signal. Some high quality TVs and just about all projectors are "real" 720p. But most 720p flat screen TV sets use cheap display panels with one of two bastard resolutions: 1024x768 or 1366x768.

The problem is that is you only select 720p on the Arris box, it means that the Arris box will pass-through all 720p channels but it rescales the remaining 480i and 1080i programs to 720p as well. The problem is that the so-called 720p TV is NOT a real 720p TV - it is 1024x768 or 1366x768 !! This means that the TV itself has to rescale ALL incoming signals, even 720p AGAIN, to whichever bastard resolution it supports. You are now rescaling 720p channels TWICE and degrading the image TWICE. :o

This is completely unavoidable - with the exception of setting the Arris box to pass through all three channel resolutions and all the TV to do all the rescaling ONLY ONCE.

I hope this superficial explanation makes sense.

I wonder it is this some kind of error,as it is mentioned elsewhere in thread, and makes it hard to set up future recordings, even you dont have a full guide to wotk with

Got the gateway system installed yesterday. So far I'm reasonably happy, but I do need to get the hang of the new system. A couple of issues that I have so far:

1. No channel icons in the guide. This is frustrating when setting up series records, mostly because I want to make sure I'm on the Canadian channel for Amazing Race so CBS doesn't screw my recording with NFL overage.

2. This is the really strange one: I have an IR Blaster setup (Niles Whole Home system) because everything is tucked away in the closet. Prior to the install, the system worked flawlessly. Now, I can control the Arris box, but only by holding the remote in very specific locations in the room. This is consistent in the 4 rooms that I have access to the system. I also have a Blu-ray player in the same system, and it still works without a hitch. This phenomenon is the same with Shaw remote, as well as my Harmony 890 and 688. It's really frustrating, since the system is completely unresponsive until you find the right spot. Is it something to do with the remotes? I'm really at a loss here.

So last night the PVR went all crazy on me. I had a few shows (Harry's Law, Criminal Minds) record only 4-6 minutes of the hours; but I also had a few shows 'record twice'

What I mean by that is the recording showed 2 hours 5 minutes and then when I was just about done the episode the show 'started over' in the 59 minute range - it appeared to be the exact channel and time frame so somehow it doubled the recording and tacked it onto the end.

I'm trying to figure out the instances when this happened as Tuesday night it did everything perfect. I have a few 'test' records today - we will see what happens; but it appears as though the PVR issues are still here to say.

cavu, as per the Gateway User Guide, Pg 55, and and the TV Setup screen that can be seen on ALL Gateway boxes:

If you have connected the Total Home Portal unit to your TV with an HDMI™ cable, your TV Setup
should automatically select the correct resolution.
If you are using alternate cables, including an HDMI to DVI cable, you should select the highest
video resolution supported by your TV. The Shaw Gateway Experience automatically adjusts the
video output to match the broadcast format and the selections set in the TV Setup menu. The
video resolution options are 480i (non-HDTV), 480p (non-HDTV), 720p (default), 1080i, and
1080p.
If your TV is standard-defi nition (SD), make sure 480i is the only box checked. All other video
resolutions will be output at 480i.
And; the key sentence is in yellow:
http://www.digitalhome.ca/forum/picture.php?albumid=816&pictureid=4545

So, while your explanation may be valid, for the vast majority of people who just want to be able to change channels with as little delay as possible, not to mention these are the instructions provided by the manufacturer/provider, my advice is not incorrect.

It has also been well documented in these threads that 1080p is not supported at this time and should not be used. This has been posted by Shaw employees.

Selecting 1080p can cause problems with the gateway. It should not be selected.

It has also been recomended to select only the highest resolution possible on your tv. This will help to reduce the number of problems with the gateway. At least at my house

To echo Jetranger, it has been mentioned many times that one resolution should be used to ensure faster channel selection.

While I understand you can set it all over the place, it's kind of buying premium gas when regular is recommended - you may feel better but there is little point.

All my equipment will run 1080p, it is set at 1080i for television.

To set all the different resolutions is of course optional, but based on the recommendations from Shaw, it is best to select the best you can get and leave it at that for now...

Getting several 'interruptions' in recordings these days, about every 10 - 15 minutes or so. It's like a 'pause' but when the picture and sound come back you are missing the time it was paused for. Usually this is just a second or two but it's very reminiscent of the audio drops we had with the original PVRs. That took years to get fixed and there is still some debate on if it ever did get fixed on not.

Another very strange thing that happened to me the other night is the Colbert Report recorded as usual but missed the first 15 minutes or so and yet extended the recording out to 52 minutes for some reason. I watched the recording, such as it was, and decided to keep it in case it would yield some information. Low and behold today I find there is a second recording and it's the missing first segment of the show. Since this program is aired only the once each day, I know it hasn't been 'filled in' later.

There is one notable difference in how the recordings are presented and that is there is no 'green square' at the end of the recording listing for that second recording on the same date. I have pictures which I might post to an album rather than take up more space here but this is a really strange occurrence. I know there was only the one 'partial' recording there yesterday and now there are three recordings, including last night's show which recorded just fine.

I don't recall if I did but it is happening a lot on different channels now. I have a couple of short videos of it but I don't post on YouTube so I'll just keep them for future reference.
